I think both Airbus and Boeing have a long way to go before they're in the risk of failing. There is just too much growth in the airlines right now

I do hope so. I have read too much about great aircraft companies that die out due to a sudden, unexpectedly bad design. With the technology of nowadays, however, prospects may have risen.

I think it's hard for a big company to make big mistakes nowadays, all the design is on computers, simulated and all.
If anything is going to bring the giants down it's a basic design flaw that grounds thousands of aircraft for weeks or months

Well,I think there are major decisions that the companies must make on the designs that may affect the usefulness and attractiveness of the plane. For example, Boeing has completely done away with the engine bleed-air system for cabin pressurization, while the Airbus A350 still retains the bleed-air system. This may produce an outcome in which one proves to be better or preferred by airlines. Of course, this is only a small detail, but another big concern is that since technology is becoming increasingly common, almost any company with enough funds will be able to come up with a design that may compete on a big scale with Boeing and Airbus. An example is the CSeries, and China's COMAC is becoming a major concern.

That's what I think, though :P.

Boeing and Airbus are only managing to compete with the much-more-efficient CSeries by drastically lowering 737 and A320 prices. It seems to be working currently.
