Dude........ You drive 50,000 km/year?? How far do you live from your job??

Oh, you'd be astonished how fast you can log so many km with the right job. I myself know 3 or 4 people who have a home office but clock 80-100 km per year. But most of them have company cars since the fuel price is a thing that can deflate a good income very quickly.

Last friday fuel prices rose to €1.52/l for Super (98octane) and standart (95 octance). Diesel was at 1.50. (That's about €6 per American gallon).

On one hand our government says people should take jobs that are 50 or 100 km from their home but on the other hand they put heavy taxes on fuel. Of course there's public transport, but what's it worth to have a bus line to/fro your village where the last bus leaves at 6pm? Should people just tell their employees "f*** you, I'm leaving 5.40pm sharp 'cause I gotta catch my bus!" ?

The problem in the US is that the cheap gas prices are what led to everyone moving out of cities.  I know it sucks for everyone when gas prices double, but it's something we'd have to deal with at some point anyway.  I feel bad for the people who need to drive trucks and SUV's for work and are getting screwed by the high prices.
The problem is that 90% of the trucks and SUV's aren't necessary.  I work in a small city, more like a big town, walk or ride my bike everywhere, and park the car everyday but Saturday, when I drive 5 miles to do my shopping for the week.  The crazy thing about it is that 50% of the apts and houses around me are unoccupied because people don't want to live in the city.  They want their big houses in the suburbs, then they need a big Tahoe or Expedition to drive 20 miles to work, 10 miles to Wal-Mart, 10 miles to the grocery store, and then complain about how much gas costs.
Those are the people that make me glad we finally have some sort of disincentive to burning oil.  The only thing that's going to help us lessen our dependence on it is for it to cost more.  Nothing else has ever worked, nor do I think it ever will in the future.

Yah, $2.33/liter  :evil:

@Vamerica:
If you take a small car and fill it up with 5 people you got way better fuel usage rates than a moped. Plus you don't kill the environment as much :roll:

@MAXAir:
I never understood the American urge to drive a SUV. They're expensive, they're gas guzzlers, they are huge -> no good unless you are a farmer and complete crap if you live in the city!

They are also more dangerous for everyone. If you are inside the vehicle, it is top heavy, and more prone to rolling than a car. They are also more dangerous to everyone else because of the fact that they are so much bigger and heavier built than cars. Another factor is that they are harder to see out of, so you can more easily run over things (damaging both whatever you run over and the vehicle).

I have no idea why people here buy so many, it's crazy.  The only explanations I can come up with is that people need more space as they spend more time in the car.  If you're in the car 4 hours a day with a few kids you would need a lot of space. Some people have been scared into thinking they're not able to drive in rain or snow unless you have 4wd or awd.  Minivans have been branded as only for moms with kids, so it's not cool for people to drive them anymore.
SUV's have basically become a status symbol.  Station wagons have been "uncool" since the 70's and 80's, hatchbacks are coming back a little bit, but people still don't like them.  I really don't understand the whole thing.  A BMW station wagon is seen as any other car, yet a Hummer H3, with about the same space and much less comfortable ride is seen as "cool" because the people driving it must be adventurous people to drive something like that.
I think the gas prices going up, while it is going to hurt a lot of people who really don't deserve it, will be a good thing in the long run.  Part of the reason a lot of people drive SUV's is because everyone else does and i's not safe to buy a small car.  I hope this will help reverse the trend so we don't continue buying bigger and bigger vehicles to protect ourselves from the other vehicles which continue to get bigger and bigger.
Sorry for the ranting, I just can't believe people are shocked when oil prices go up after we've been wasting so much of it for so long.

What about Sedans then? I know, they don't offer that much space- but IMO they're much cooler than any station wagon+ they use less fuel.
And I deem the idea of a 2WD drive being unsave as kinda crazy. I mean ok, if you've got a backwheel-driven, unstabelized 250 hp sportscar that may be true, but if you can't handle such cars you should just try frontwheel-driven ones. They're much easyer to handle for drivers who're afraid of the power...

I don't know. It might put an ending to our mobility and to the freedom of going wherever we want to go. And I don't like that idea very much :?

Well, once people get used to drive 4WDs through downtown Chicago it's very hard to tell them that a Smart or the bus might be a solution as well. But time& the forces of economy will teach them sooner or later (the only question is: Do we want that to happen? Usually drastic changes offer much ground to drastic politicians!).

Sedans are good too, but I'm talking about cars with similar space.  Sedans are seen as too small to be a family vehicle.  I would love if everyone here could drive sedans, but the reason people bought the SUV's in the first place is the size and utility so I can't see people going from an Expedition down to a Civic or Accord.  Hatchbacks and wagons do offer the utility that people want, since it has plenty of place for all their stuff.

As for the safety, I agree with you 100%, the people who are scared of 2wd are the ones who think you should be able to drive the same way whether it's dry or snowing.  They are the same people who cause most of the accidents on the roads.  I hate to say it, but they've basically been dumbed down, they have 4wd, traction control, stability control, and then think you can just drive like normal when it's snowing.

I don't doubt that it will reduce our mobility and freedom to go anywhere we want to whenever we want to, but I don't think it's entirely a bad thing.  We're still a very wealthy nation, when people want to go somewhere, they can and they will.  My hope is that they will cut out a lot of the pointless driving though.  When 4 people all leave the same street and drive to the same place for work, there is obviously some unnecessary driving there.  I know there are some people who really don't have a choice, they live far away from work and there is no mass transit or car pool they can take there.  These are the people that are going to be hurt.  However, for every one person like that, there are 10 more burning oil unnecessarily.  If we all just cut out the unnecessary trips we would still be free to go wherever, just at a slightly higher cost.

Politicians got us into this mess, nobody believes them anymore that they're going to come into office and do something that will get gas prices back to the way they were.  People are realizing that they need to change something themselves.  Our president and politicians pride themselves on the fact that the government is not the solution to everyones problems and for once I have to agree with them.  They've been saying we should keep buying stuff, keep using resources, buy a big house in the middle of nowhere, a couple cars and be free to do whatever we want, but when things start going downhill they offer absolutely no solutions.  All they offer are stupid ideas like ethanol or more tax cuts.  Economic pressures are sadly the only thing that is going to get us out of this mess we're in.
