It's sad how war destroys nations like that. Syria has (or had) lots of beautiful and historical buildings and cities, and now most are in ruins.

Most syrian archeological sites were either ruins already, or had been rebuilt as turist attractions in the last 10 years. And they have all suffered from various invasions/wars over the last 2000 years. I actually find it quite amazing how the various citadels and crusader castles in the region have found use again. Castles havent been used in warfare since, what, the 1500s?

2014 haven't really been the best year when it comes to peace. Crimea gets annexed, IS takes territory in the Levant, the Israel/Palestine conflict escalates... :-X
