Airline Branding Center / Re: Transparent Aircraft Template Center
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:27:53 am »
There's one here. That's posted from the Liveries Topic in general chat - along with quite a few links to other templates scattered throughout. It's a bit small (and not transparent) though.

Everything's working again! Both box3 and the regular site. Speed seems quite good.

Neither box3 nor the normal server are working for me now, though box3 worked earlier. Box3 was slow, but it worked...

Wasn't the server going to be moved over the the European one eventually anyway? It seems like a problem to be having the data on a different server to the main server, so I think that would be a priority if you were going to switch.
I don't see why there is any reason to switch over to the European server temporarily though. I thought DNS changes usually took a while (a day or so) to process anyway, so I don't think it would work to solve the problem in the short term.

These forums seem kinda slow too. But that might just be me.

It's a good idea, though I suspect most people wouldn't use it, as it would be too much effort. It would allow people to set up worlds based on certain scenarios, like USSR, only using their planes. I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement...
I think the best way to implement it would be to allow world owners to uncheck companies first, and individual planes by going to a separate page (or perhaps expanding a panel) for that company. I suspect most people would only want to select certain companies. Ideally the list of companies/planes to select would be only those aircraft in the world during the time specified for the game.

General Chat / Re: Any Sense in less than 100% Loadfactor?
« on: October 16, 2010, 02:43:48 pm »
It costs you money to edit routes, so you may waste money if you are close to 100%, but you would aim to set them at 100% when adjusting fares. Indeed, one may decide to have a lower price than needed for 100% so you don't need to edit your routes as often...

There's a 727 template here, both 727-100 and -200. It's a bit small though...

Not quite... Chrome is the fastest all round browser at the moment!

Game Data / Re: A380?
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:55:46 am »
I doubt Airbus data would be wrong. Airlines are hardly going to decide to by $100 millions worth of planes simply based on a few numbers up on the manufacturers website... If the numbers were wrong, I'm sure the airlines would be able to get their money back anyway.
In terms of fliers, they don't really care what the plane's stats are - they are more concerned about airline specific seating and scheduling.

General Chat / Re: How is Airline value calculated...?
« on: September 28, 2010, 02:33:48 pm »
Airline value basically takes into account all your assets - planes and cash you own. As your planes age, they will decrease in value, however this should be offset by their profits. You will note that if you lease, as more of your money goes out of your company, you will have a lower value. However, leasing can allow you to expand faster, i.e. have a greater DOC, and so may lead to a higher value in the long term.

Regarding calculating the DOC and profits of others, that can be tricky. To get a good DOC estimate, you can try comparing their airline values just before and just after the day change (i.e. on the hour). You subtract the first value from the second to get a rough DOC. Using Excel and copying the table directly out of the game can make that easier. However, you should consider two things.

Firstly, if they happen to be spending/gaining money at that time, you may get an incorrect amount.
Secondly, and more importantly, this does not take into account their monthly costs/gains, like maintenance or leases. This is not so much a problem with the method, but with the use of DOC as a measure of profitability. In the case of someone who is leasing, they have both high monthly costs (when lease revenue is due) and a high DOC. Conversely, someone who is leasing out a number of aircraft has little day to day income, but gets a large amount of money each month.

To overcome this, you could use the above procedure spaced out over a 24 hour period, i.e. gather your data at the same time on two consecutive days. This has the problem that the other airlines may do things which vary their value in the short term. For example, placing an order with a broker temporarily reduces your value, because you give money to the broker, but don't have any physical planes yet. This value will come back when the planes are received, but may cause problems for calculating monthly profit.

An even more complicated approach could work thus: calculate their DOC as above, then calculate their monthly costs by comparing their values on the last day of one month and the first day of the next (remembering to subtract their DOC earnings for that day). Then multiply the DOC by 24 and subtract the monthly costs. This approach involves more work, and requires you to be playing AM as the month changes (which simply may not be possible), so it is by no means perfect.

In the end though, it doesn't really matter what the other players DOCs are. If your aim is to overtake them on the rankings, just try to run your airline as efficiently as possible, and make as much money as you can.

Suggestions / Re: Website Implementation
« on: September 22, 2010, 08:58:07 am »
I tend to think this would be more effort than it's worth. I agree it would require considerable additional work to make it fit in with most of the game sites, as they tend to use flash, and most likely wouldn't be able to cope with a multi-web-page style game like AM. However, if the coding could be done, I think a flash site could quite possibly be far more visually interesting than the current site.

Naturally such an idea would expose AM to many more gamers, however I tend to think the people browsing these kind of flash game sites tend to be looking for a quick and simple game to fight off boredom. AM , by contrast, is fairly complicated, requires registration (bound to turn many casual gamers off...) and is fairly slow initially. I highly doubt that the extra exposure would hurt AM, but I tend to think it wouldn't be too much use either.

Were there any plans to create a mobile optimised site? That would go well with a short cut app...

The Purchase Tokens button looks fuzzy in that picture and is a bit too close to the bottom green bar, but other than that, it seems quite good.

[=] Suggestions / Re: Aircraft storage / mothballing unused aircraft
« on: September 22, 2010, 08:40:46 am »
I think there is some merit to the suggestion. When maintenance is revised, the costs will be tied to aircraft utilisation, so in effect, not using an aircraft will lower long term maintenance costs. I think that, under such a system, it makes sense to partially tie aircraft value to utilisation too (as a well used, worn out, aircraft is going to be worth less than an unused one). In effect, I think a new maintenance and value formula could implement a large part of this suggestion.

The idea for long term storage has been brought up before, and I think it has been fairly well received. I don't think it is too much of a priority, but I don't think it would hurt to have an additional feature to mothball planes. I think that there should be some, albeit considerably reduced, maintenance costs for the aircraft. I would agree with the idea of having a 24 hour period to bring the plane back into service - which would discourage people mothballing planes to avoid a day or two's maintenance costs before they use the planes.

[-] Suggestions / Re: Relief Crews
« on: September 19, 2010, 09:16:14 am »
I think they still pay the crew who is off, as they still need to be in the actual plane doing nothing while not flying... (although this could be dependent on the airline). In effect, on long flights you would need to pay twice as much in salaries. Even so, I don't think it is a problem that needs urgent fixing. Indeed, pilot salaries could vary so much that any figures from the game are going to be overly simplistic anyway.

You could always do a Print Screen and save the image of your map using a picture editing program. Of course it wouldn't be interactive or updated automatically...

There are plenty of sites, just search for "free image uploads".
Imageshack allows you to upload without registration, and is a fairly common site for forum image hosting.
