I'm having trouble. I'm using Photoshop 7, and I am trying to Polygonal Lasso the area where there will be a stripe down the fuselage, and I am trying to make the area I have selected a new layer, so that I can turn down the Opacity of the stripes so that the cracks in the fuselage will be seen underneath. I press ctrl+c then ctrl+v, but it's not making a new layer. What should I do?

Select the area you want to copy -> Menu Layer -> New -> Layer via Copy

Otherwise Menu Layer -> New -> Blank and simply paint the area you want to color, adjust opacity and merge

Neither work. The whole 'Layer' drop down has gone that grey shade where you can't click on it. I am using a template from Jetabout.

It will probably be in GIF format. Layers do not work with that, so you have to convert it first.
Go to Image -> Mode -> RGB
This will enable you to use layers.

I finally got around to painting (after making the 3D model of) an MD-81.
This is my second most used plane type, CHR Airlines operates 11 with more soon to come.
