Most places national pride exists as a bad thing (nationalism), while the Nordic countries are good to keep it at a peaceful level

Not sure I agree, I would say Europe in generel. Most nations has a sense of national identity, which leads to national pride (or shame),
You won't avoid that by going elsewhere  :)

Nationalism is a cancer that needs to be removed. There is no such thing as good nationalism. The very nature of nationalism forbids criticism, free speech and liberalism.

Your average 3rd world or developing country won't have a sense of national pride. People are still too busy getting through life to develop any pride towards a vague "state".

If the country has a history, there will be a national identity, if there is a national identity, some will take pride in it.

Also you are describing the extremem form of nationalism, in the sense that Hitler used it. We don't see much of that these days.

Found this definition of nationalism (and patriotism as they are pretty similar)
"Nationalism means to give more importance to unity by way of a cultural background, including language and heritage. Patriotism pertains to the love for a nation, with more emphasis on values and beliefs."
Always wondered what the difference is :)

I've always found it a bit weird how some people are overly proud of their nation, or just being proud of something you didn't decide yourself. :P

Was more referring to the suits and the flags, don't think I have seen as many Danish flags in my lifetime as I have seen norwegian flags on one May 17th :D

I was quite surprised to learn that our Scandic neighbors don't celebrate their nation during some point of the year! Are we the only one who does this? :P

We don't have an independence day - we've been independent for ... well, for ever :P We have constitution day, but it's nowhere near May 17th!

Do you even have a national day? I know the UK doesn't have one, but I thought they were the only one. :P
