I use a mac version of Microsoft paint called Paintbrush. For most of the actual pictures I use google images and search for free vectors which are pretty much outlines of things that I then color or modify. Thanks for the kind words!

Here's an expample of what I would search for if I was looking for a humming bird for a caribbean airline logo. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=hummingbird+vector (ignore the snide comments as it types) Then just go to images.
