I'd say Very Large (747) 2 Years Long Haul (777 340 330 767) 2-3 Years Medium Haul (757 320) 3-4 Years Short-Medium Haul (737 CRJ 100 Fokker 100/70) 4 Years Short Haul Turboprops (ATR ATP DH8) 4-5 Years

1) Avoid Wide Bodies if possible
2) Never buy planes over 150m

And, most jets (exclude Biz jets) should be thrown away when @ 2 (more expensive ones) to 3 yo (cheaper ones).

Is maintenance charged only if an aircraft is flying?  Or will I be charged even if I don't assign it to any routes?

Technically the aircraft is not flying so I don't think there are any maintenance charges, however the value keeps on dropping as it ages, even when not in use, so its not ideal to have aircrafts parked, i.e you gain nothing by having an aircraft that's not in use. There might be minor maintenance charges when an aircraft is parked, but I am not too sure.

If you own the plane, you pay maintenance on it. Whether it flies 24 hours or 0 hours.
