Scandinavian Airlines Launches Services
This week saw the launch of services by SAS Scandinavian Airlines, a new Copenhagen-based airline that has been set up to link Scandinavia to the world. The airline is using a single Antonov An-38-100 on daily services to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Gothenburg, Oslo and Stockholm, as well as thrice-weekly services to London and Paris.

The airline has ambitious expansion plans, with the first phase involving a build-up of services from Copenhagen. In the future the company is also looking to establish bases in Oslo and Stockholm, whilst joining an alliance to help deliver worldwide connections from Scandinavia.

Expanding Fleet Leads to Growth at Copenhagen
Scandinavian Airlines has expanded its network from Copenhagen with the delivery of a number of new aircraft, including one ATR-42 and three Jetstream 61s. A second An-38 has also been purchased from United Airlines, and following a re-fit it has been earmarked for service from a planned hub in Stockholm.

The airline is now operating 34 routes from Copenhagen, and has announced its intention of opening services to Barcelona and Madrid when its first jet aircraft, an Embraer ERJ-145, enters service later in the year.

Fleet Upgrade Continues
The upgrade of the Scandinavian Airlines fleet has continued, with the introduction of additional ATR 42-500s to replace the carrier's pair of Antonov An-38-100s on feeder routes out of Copenhagen. The airline is now operating seven ATR 42s, alongside five BAe Jetstream J61s and two Embraer ERJ-145LRs.

Another of the 50-seat Embraer regional jets is on order, which will be used to launch services from Stockholm to Madrid and Barcelona, whilst the airline has also placed an order for three Fokker 70s to take over key strategic routes to destinations that include London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle. The company is also in negotiations with Third Wing Air for the lease of up to eight more J61s, which will enable the airline to open its planned third hub at Oslo Gardermoen.

Baltic European Takes To The Skies
Scandinavian Airlines has been re-launched as Baltic European, following the opening of hubs in Hamburg and Warsaw. The company has retained its original logos and fleet livery, but has secured a new flight code (BE) to complement the revised name.

The airline is rapidly expanding, with deliveries of Fokker 70 and Airbus A319 jets enabling its turbprop fleet to be redeployed onto shorter, thinner sectors. Further expansion will be taking place over the coming months, as the airline continues to identify other markets within Northern Europe and opportunities for new routes. An increase in flights to Southern Europe is at the core of the strategy, whilst the company is also looking to Eastern Europe for development.

Baltic European Starts Helsinki Hub
Baltic European has added a fifth hub to its network, with the opening of a base at Helsinki's Vantaa Airport. The new operating hub will help the airline to consolidate its position as one of the Northern Europe's largest airlines, and further strengthen its position in the lucrative Scandinavian market.

Baltic European Joins NetWorld, Expands Fleet
Baltic European has become the fifth member of the largest alliance, NetWorld. The company joins fellow European carriers Virgin Atlantic and Central Air Europe, as well as Travel Air of the United States and Eastern Airlines of China. Baltic European's entry into the alliance is set to benefit shareholders and passengers alike, as the possibilities for global connections and joining up of frequent flyer schemes.

In other news, Baltic European has taken delivery of additional Airbus A319 and Fokker 70 jets to bolster its European network, and has also received a pair of Airbus A321-200s for high-density routes from its main hub at Copenhagen.

The additions to the fleet will help the airline to build up its route network from the new hub at Helsinki, as well as the four existing hubs at Copenhagen, Stockholm, Hamburg and Warsaw.

Baltic European Starts Moscow Hub
Baltic European has added its sixth hub, with the opening of a base at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. The airline has based a fleet of Airbus A319s and Fokker 70s at the airport to operate flights to Western and Central Europe, and has also deployed its third A321-200 to the city for trunk routes to London Heathrow, Paris CDG and Munich. Expansion at the airport will continue with new routes to destinations already served from its main bases, whilst the company is also planning to extend its network to the south and east to take in the emerging markets of Central Asia and the Middle East.

Round The World Flights Now Available
Baltic European is now offering round-the-world tickets after launching transpacific routes to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Tokyo Narita, a Networld Alliance Focus City. The airline has launched several medium- and long-haul services from the airport, and has also set up a small network from Shanghai Pudong International, including onward connections from Copenhagen to Sydney. The carrier is using a modern fleet of Airbus A319, A321 and A330 twinjets for its Networld services.
