General Chat / Why join an alliance?
« on: January 04, 2008, 07:48:20 pm »
What are sane alliance rules?  I want to create an alliance and reap maximum benefit from it.  I figure only one person per continent and I'll only allow those with valuable hubs.

General Chat / What's wrong with you guys?

There can be many reasons for this.  Perhaps the route means a lot to you and they want to make sure you don't profit from it.  Perhaps you came into a route where they were making money and decided to throw a commuter in there and steal their customers.  It could also be that someone is pissed that little airlines are still sticking a pilatus or beech on there.  It could be that they saw you overreaching your bounds and saving up and buying a 737 and they want to make you only get what they get from a small plane for your massive investment.

It could be any one of a number of reasons.  I can say that I've done it and it seems that it is having the right effect.

In reality, pricing on main routes where there are plenty of leisure travelers is always low.  The airlines often need these to feed their networks so the price of these in and of themselves isn't a huge concern.  You might only charge $1 for Chicago-JFK, but you probably would need that for passengers connecting to an international flight.

I love all the low DOP players sinking themselves in a hole saving up for a 737.  God bless boeing's marketing and brand name recognition.  Makes this even easier.

Well you could just focus on large routes.  Now you know the frustration of a product that is difficult to differentiate.  To make it worse, there is no marketing function on the program.  I've put in an enhancement request for it.  The regular airlines go through this all of the time.  They are also adjusting their prices based on route demand, capacity, etc.  No ticket from A to B is ever the same price for long.

"Or a person with a lot of large aircraft like in my case. I would have 100 - 300 unused 1049's at any given time last round."

Actually, even then that would be assuming that you're on the same continent and if you were that you had the same hubs.  After that, you'd have to close bases to move your bases to that person's bases.  The airline industry only wishes it was this easy to grown an airline.

7M and the opportunity cost of saving up to buy a 737 at this level makes buying one a less than good move.

I think you're still 35th in the game overall right?

There is essentially no way to be destroyed in this game.  It would essentially take several different airlines leveraging their existing networks and going into your hub and putting a $1 flight on each and every one of your routes.  The game isn't that hard and I'm surprised that someone with so much money would be freaking out because there was actually competition on routes.  ;)

I'll put a suggestion about displaying that a little more clearly in the suggestion forum ;)

How can I tell how long it takes for planes to be made?  I just bought a plan with a 100+ capacity and it says it will take two days for it to show up.

They still don't and don't care to.  That's why you have Canadair and Embraier (sp?).

The plane didn't suck.  Noobs liked it because they didn't have the capital to buy better planes.  I'd love to have some 747's right now, but that doesn't mean that my existing planes suck.  Those noobs would have taken a long time if they had waited around while their first plane made enough money to buy a constellation.

New people will buy the Beech's as well.  They're a decent aircraft with a good amount of capacity for a small plane, decent speed, low fuel consumption and good speed and range.  Just because they're not ideal for a large airline doesn't mean that they suck.

Is that a pool of flights or is that per member?  If per member, wouldn't the ideal be to have a very small alliance so that you can use all of those flights in the pool?

It was a fairly new industry.  Lots of players jockeying for spots.  Once planes started getting bigger, it cut down on the number of players.  It costs billions to develop an airplane like the 747.  That cuts out a ton of the smaller players.  Many of them stayed in aviation, but as suppliers moreso than those making their own planes.
