Title: Vatsim or VA members here??
Post by: ceo_txi on February 28, 2008, 03:01:01 am
I have read in some of the various VA forums that there a lot of VA members here.
Who all here are members of a VA or hold VATSIM positions?
List your VA's and rank.

Mine are below:

Virtual American Airlines - Command Captain

Virtual Texas International Airlines - CEO

Delta Virtual (DeltaVA.org) Senior Captain - Retired from DVA 09-2006

Well take a look at what you want.

Some important items:
There are very few VA's that operate well out of a "Freewebs" site. A propperly done website without pop-up ads does say a lot about what goes on behind.
Look at requirements to join VATSIM/IVAO. If you are not a member and are not interested in joining either then dont bother.
Your type of flying also dicates what VA is right for you, personally I am in the mood for flying Props, so I do a lot of flying for 2 ATR Operating VA's. If you like a particular airline, there may be a VA dedicated to them.
Not all VA's have to be based on real airlines, there are excellent VA's that are completely fake. It just depends on what you want.

Finally, dont join 20 VA's at once. It will save on the inactivity emails. ;)

And since I haven't really seen this topic before.

I fly for 2 VA's at the moment:
Air Contractors Virtual (ABR Virtual) - They are an Irish based airline that operate the ATR42/72, Lockheed Hercules (Civvy Version! L-382G), A300 and the B727. They have a vast array of routes throughout Europe and operate with real world callsigns and have good integration with FSAcars.

Aer Arann Virtual (REA Virtual) - Again, another Irish based airline that operate the ATR42/72. They will also be bringing in the BAe146. They have a very large network of routes across Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Spain. Quite a variety of hops from about 40mins through to 3hours.

Previous VA's:
Icelandair Virtual
US Airways Virtual

Not that it is more complicated, as you say, but a headset will come in handy for voice operations on VATSIM. As for a pilots liscence, no, but you should have a reasonable knowledge of how to fly your FS aircraft, i.e Takeoff and landing procedures, SIDs and STARs, a few more, check www.vatsim.net/prc

Is there a place where to fly online with others without having to prove your skills? Just hop in a plane, connect to a server, file a flightplan and start the engines. More like a beginners place. I mean I know how to fly (at least in the sim  ) and I know the aircrafts pretty well but I am not very familiar with certain ATC commands and probably I still make a lot of mistakes (e.g. When to extend flaps upon approach? When to lower undercarriage? What's the proper speed at what distance to the destination airport?). I know such a place but unfortunatly most times I am the only one who is flying there. So I am looking for a kind of "student's" place where I am not the only on that the teacher is shouting at  (Don't tell me to use the "AI" teacher from the sim. That's boring and you can't ask questions :? )

Quote from: "MXP"
I am a good pilot and have passed my FS licenses but I don't want to spend all of my flying time under strict rules following flightplans I don't want to do. I would also like a casual server where you can 'Just hop in a plane, connect to a server, file a flightplan and start the engines.' What is the name of the one you use, AirHanoverInternational?

See PM.

I just joined Kiwi Air( http://flykiwi.net/index.php ). Im hoping to make one that is based in the Australasia. I could use a team if some of you want to help. Ill also need someone that can make logo's on planes for FSX that include model too.

cheers, Doug

I used to run a VA... waste of time.

Just being in one takes the fun out of flying, why make pretend work, i just don't get it.

I fly where and when i want.

I know, old topic :P

I'm currently flying for Breathe Airways, which is good, and one day I might eventually consider starting one. Not yet though, not enough free time.

Ah, ceo_txi, one of the contributors to one of the most entertaining threads (http://stephenm.org/smfforum/index.php?topic=4912.15) on this forum. Shame he removed most of this posts, but the majority them can been seen in the other replies.

I have to admit that was very funny. His posts just progressively deteriorated until he was plainly contradicting himself, and he came across as slightly paranoid.

Why don't we have any characters like this around any more?
I think it is the devious, wicked admins, probably in collusion with such characters to stop them from entertaining us!

Oh, you cannot, repeat cannot, blame the admins for killing these things. I think, having read this entire thread for the third time, that me and (especially) DDD did everything we could to make this individual feel right at home.

Now, let's get back to the original topic of Virtual Airlines.

I agree, the admins here seem to be incredibly patient despite often very difficult people. These kind of fights need to be stopped, before people say things they will regret. There always are some people who look for fights on forums.

Virtual airlines, I haven't found a good one really. I guess I am too laid back in the way I like to fly (it is, after all, for fun). I don't like all the checks and rules that they seem to impose. However, it is appealing the way you can ascend the ranks - actually earn the right to fly massive aircraft, rather than just start off with it. I suppose I will have to keep looking...

There are some good ones out there, it's just a matter of finding one that does suit your wants and needs. Which is hard, I have to admit. And even when you have found one you like, there's always gonna be a time when you don't feel like flying for a couple of months, or a year or so, so you get kicked out for inactivity and have to start all over again. I know I can't do a flight every month because I'd be bored to death, eventually. Managing a virtual airline, that's something else. I still want to start one sometime, see how I do.

Sorry for my noobness, but can someone explain what do you, as a pilot, have to do in a VA?  :-[
Title: Re: Vatsim or VA members here??
Post by: MrOrange on May 13, 2009, 09:42:41 pm
Basically, what you'd do as a pilot in a real-life airline, albeit slightly less realistic, and on Flight Simulator: Fly routes the airline lets you fly (well, more like fly routes the airline supplies you with, and you get to choose which ones you fly).

So do you have to fly a scheduled flight (i.e. every week I have to fly London Heathrew to Paris Orly)?
Also, are flights flown online or on my own computer? And how does the virtual airline know if I flew the flight or not?
Also, where can I find a list of VAs?

Thanks alot!

Post by: MrOrange on May 14, 2009, 04:14:34 pm
No, it's not that restrictive. Basically, what you do is (in most VA's) you book a flight from the system (any flight, just choose one you like to fly) that you're allowed to fly based on your hours flown for that airline. When you're relatively new, you'd probably be flying ATR's or Embraers, and progressing through the ranks you'd go to 737's, A320's and eventually on to the 747's, A340's, that sort of stuff. Anyway, you just pick a flight whenever you feel like flying.

Some VA's only allow you to fly on VATSIM, IVAO or Virtual Skies, or some other online network, but most VA's are OK with just flying it on your own computer. That really depends on what VA you decide to fly for. For offline flights, the VA is really pretty much counting on your honesty in submitting Pilot Reports, in which you fill in some details about the flight.

There was a list of virtual airlines on Avsim, but they got hacked so now I don't know where to find one. If you want a list of some good VA's that might interest you, without me advertising anything on the forums, send me a PM and I'll see if I can help you.
