I would, but the amount of computers I see around the world left on (school for eg) needlessly overnight plus the lights anger me.

nope won't do it.

We get our power from dams, so electricity is not the worst polluting factor in this neck of the woods.

Paper waste is that much more of a trouble here. So i say close all the govenement offices for a day (unpaid day off), That will save a lot of trees. :P

S Club 7? That was years ago.

You couldn't find a comeback so you decide to post that...  :-\

To take the aircraft example, simply setting speed to the economic cruise speed would be efficient.

There would be no need to "conserve" as much as we can if people like him were ridden of.

Pople in this world live for profit. That's why we still use oil and other crap. The world has enough renewable energy to keep us powered (geothermal, especially).

Take a look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs for why people do what they do. :)

Have a look at the Zeitgeist movement. thezeitgeistmovement.com
Although some of the stuff they say there might not never happen, but there are ways of stopping global warming and stuff like that.

Nah... I blame the economy. The whole system is based in greed and selfishness ;)

By...
- encouraging WWF to pull another Earth Hour next year, and pollute the world more than they reduce pollution during world hour (assuming that pollution was really reduced during Earth Hour ) with their ways of advertising
- by emitting more CO2 through using candle or hand-torch during the Earth Hour
- by thinking that he has "helped the world" already and therefore relax on the "world saving" efforts in everyday life

To sort of spoil the fun, they don't actually turn off any coal/oil/gas/what-ever-other-fossil-fuel-they-are-burning power plants for the one hour that we all turn off our lights (coal power plants, for example, can take days to warm up to operating temperature). Therefore no CO2 is actually saved... But its the thought that counts...

Then when we have to consider the toxic chemicals in the batteries you use in your torch during Earth Hour...
Title: Re: Earth Hour 2009
Post by: Jps on March 30, 2009, 02:00:00 pm
Seriously. Who used a torch during Earth Hour? I mean you can always turn on a light .

Light bulbs generate heat right? So it all works out lol
Title: Re: Earth Hour 2009
Post by: dktc on March 30, 2009, 02:28:33 pm
Light bulb is far from the worst heat source....

Now if they ask everyone to turn of their air-conditioning during a heat-stroke or a snow-storm, that would help... :P

Fossil fuel power plants are mainly providers of base-load power (basically because they take so long to turn on), peak demand periods (such as heat/cold waves) are often powered by expensive, yet cleaner technologies (like hydroelectricity). What is really needed to reduce energy usage is consistent changes to people's behavior every single day.
