Title: History of you playing AM
Post by: Mastafa on December 12, 2010, 08:57:43 pm
I decided to create a topic where everyone posts how they got here, etc.

Lets start!

This is how I started:

My best friend, Sean, told me about this game: Airline. (he didn't tell me the website!!!)
So i Googled the query: Airline and registered for all these airline companies:

Game A
Airline Mogul
Game B

But none of them were the one he was talking about/

The next day, he told me the website:

mochigames.com

Well...

I tried all the websites i found...

Game A was too much competition and boring
Game B costs me 4 cents a day

Airline mogul was good.

I joined a public world
Set up one route with my Nord @ 20 frequency (maximum it would go)
Leased to planes
Set them at max frequency,too

and got bored
and went away.

A few MONTHS later, i came back, realizing the whole point of the game (i never bother to read the instructions  :P )

I came back, set all routes to 1 frequency. BUT

The next day, the world ended :'(

So i joined a private world and started playing the way i am suppose to. With a DOC of only 16M (I thought that was A LOT that time :P ) i ended 3rd place.

Now, in another world, i have a DOC of 50 Million from 1 base (1 base is the limitation :( )

The other world i play in has a limit of 20 bases, 5 foreign. I plan a  DOC of at least 150+Million.

And my progress is good. with in a week, i have a DOC of 40 Million and i am first place in the world. (Holiday flight)

A few years back, i was browsing airliners.net. That was before Airliners.net was sold off to that useless american corporation that runs a.net worse than Mugabe runs a country. I found a link to a game called Game A, or something along those lines. I caught on quickly, and found that HUGE flaw that fares were around %200 higher from ouagadougou than from LHR og ATL. So my airline grew to be among the top ten. Alas, that game was flawed, slow, and offered few editing options so after a few months i forgot all about it.
I went back to browsing a.net, and i found a link to a game called Airline Mogul. At first i thought it was strange and overly complicated. Didn't understand the purpose of those pink colours either. So i began playing and found it very fun. Because of the rather few available worlds (1 when i joined, but vastly improved with a second world after some time) competition was rather hot. I usually started airlines from smaller airports, at one time operating a rather large airline called Virgin Serbia, with hubs in Belgrade and Bordeaux, and a giant fleet of around 50 Constellations operating flights to America.
Then came the option of private worlds. At some point i had enough credits to start a world, so i created a 1 player world. I used the admin functions to give me unlimited cash, and i could try out every single plane without competition. The information i gathered was used to improve my airline in other worlds. And so here i am, now browsing the forums more than actually playing the game. I run a world, resetting inactive airlines and deleting long-inactive-resetted airlines.
I'm just waiting for the next major improvements *cough*maintenance*cough* and then i will jump back into the fray ;)

Sorry to spoil the fun, but the last rule in the forum rules reads:

Quote
There should be no discussion about other Airline Games on these forums. This is solely due to the sensitive nature of discussing competitors.
http://stephenm.org/smfforum/index.php?topic=8327.0

Without going into names, I started in mid 2005 playing an airline game and really loved it. It had a few drawbacks and other players saw huge potential for improvement. Two other games appeared and I dived straight into playing them (Both of them have now disappeared unfortunately). I felt that if they could do it, some with relatively little experience may be I can too? And thats where AM came about. I'd go into more detail but I have an exam on Air Law and Regulation in the morning that I should be studying for now instead!

Didn't understand the purpose of those pink colours either.
I'll still argue it was supposed to be a shade of red...

I started in world 9 after playing Game A, and thrived. Then some on-off time, I've had 13 airlines, three in public worlds.

It shows a view each time someone opens the thread. Everytime you check back, it adds a view. So in other words, if everyone who has so far posted has checked the thread each time someone has posted, we should have around 49 views ;)

My friend, nwadeltaboy, introduced it to me.
I was hooked almost right away. My first base was in Cairo, my DOP was $8 Million by the end of the round.
Then I tried a Europe base... and then I really got hooked... $8 Million? Haha, chump change.
I played for a good year, and then I got a little tired.
I just remembered this place again, and I'm hooked yet again.

Hullo everyone,

Quite a few posts made above are similar to my experiences.I am a newbie with an old ID (39535).

While browsing / searching for business/ strategy/ simulation games I came across AM and a couple of other games. Initially , when I tried AM I got deep into red and lost interest as I couldnt understand what to do and how to proceed. I couldnt find any help / tutorial/ forums etc.

Actually I forgot about it altogether, then again searching for some games recently I came across AM again. The game looked familiar and fortunately I could log in again. I joined late in an ongoing  public world ( which shall be ending very soon), read and asked a lot, and had started having fun. I am ranked 21 st there now, but not actually doing much there as there is less than 1 year left.

I was curious about brokers, so I managed to become a broker in a private world, which is not that exciting due to the limited number of players there. I just want to become a broker in the beginning of a world which is full of players. Guess, I will have to wait for that.

Hmmm, so long ago it seems that I first stumbled upon AM. I think it must have been A.net or something, idk. But I do remember that I lost the name of the site and searched for it and couldn't find it for quite some time. But surely I found it again, but being a noob again, I think 2197 isn't my lowest ID#, I think I may have a lower one  ??? But this is the one I'm with. I came in the modern day era that was running. Built my airline, Virgin America out of SFO. I'm not sure where my other hubs where tho. :P Been too long, but I remember joining United Sky Group : ) That alliance was great, lots of fun I had in that world and alliance. And by the end, I was #1 at SFO. And I kept that till the end of the world. Then the new world was starting, and at United Sky Group forum, we got a list of places we where to hub(yes, I know, strange, but it was fun trading with each other). I remember not having SFO, and I traded MDW, or SAN for it. But I just wanted to have SFO again. :P Fun era running with older planes. Singapore Airlines in United Sky Group was amazing at livery painting, and he made us some, sadly this is the only one I still have saved. The other ones are gone I guess(unless Mr. Orange can somehow access the forums from way back then) : /

That world was amazing cause of the cheap L-1649 Starliner? One of the lockheed's :P But after that world I think we went into multi world? And then competition shrunk, and I felt like a aspect of the game was lost for good. : / But yah, my story of AM. : )

Cheers Doug, id 2197.

Doug... I may have some saved on my PT account I will see...

I first met Stephen, while playing a different airline game, where the game had some good technical ideas, but powergamers repeatedly exploited its flaws. Since they were also premium players the devs had no desire to change that scenario.  I saw Stephen was developing this one and tried to register.  Back then only 50 players could play a round, so you had to wait until a slot opened up to get to play.

I have played on and off since those days.  I actually kind of miss the pink theme.  I do like the new scheme, but the pink is nostalgic to me.

Edit: I found a few....

Both of those were created by Singapore Air with my input as to how I wanted them..  Really nice work...

My fist airline.. at the end of the first world I joined I lost hundreds of millions a rl day. Didn't know how that happened. Later I found out you had to replace aircraft once they get too old. Scrapping those 12 year old A340's would have been a good start to lower my maintenance costs

I remember right around the time I joined, there was a HUGE controversy surrounding the $1 routes.  Especially in the single world, they were really popular...until people started realizing that they lost money on them

I remember right around the time I joined, there was a HUGE controversy surrounding the $1 routes.  Especially in the single world, they were really popular...until people started realizing that they lost money on them

I remember that. Many players wanted rules banning €1 routes.
