Since Emirates has such a large number of aircraft on order (over 200 i believe). Does anyone here think they can pull of their plans to conquer the long-haul market with no short haul connections to back it up? I think it will be interesting to see, but if they continue to link places via Dubai it's not going to work. However if they begin opening up a bit (for instance, taking advantage of open skies and placing a A380 LHR-JFK, which should mean lower prices than BA, AA etc. due to higher capacity) then there is a good chance it could work.

They serve Tehran (which is ~600nm away) with a daily A332.

They also plan to serve a small airport in the middle of Iran (of a city I've never heard of before) with a A380 and its only about 200nm away

Anything is possible when profitability isn't a concern and money is nothing (not to mention fuel price isn't even in the picture)

Totally disagree with u

ppl who think that emirates doesnt make any profit is wrong
1st of all in dubai there is not lot of petroleum around 60% of the petrol is in the abu dhabi emirate not dubai the rest is around the ein emirate in the south
dubai is a connecting airport basically connecting europe to india pakistan
2nd emirates is a profitable airline they serve huge airplanes to small cities to kill , dominate the market  just like some players do in AM
3rd Emirates Airline "experience" is really working that many other airlines r just copying what they do hint : Qatar Airways , Etihad and also i think its Jet Airways who opened a hub in Brussels to connect passengers to India
