It doesn't look like the first picture at all! Is it supposed to be a transport?

Is it a Northrop Grumman.

Think about shipping containers. Now think that, but on an aircraft.

No, not that company

Ok, let's collect all the clues:

It flew in the fifties, only one was ever constructed, it was based on an existing aircraft of which many flew, it was experimental (and unsuccessful), was American, propeller aircraft and had something that could be detached from the aircraft on the ground (not bombs or small parts, something really big). The principle (the big detachable thing) is kind of in use in some huge helicopters today which look really weird when they don't have the big box singe it's just a cockpit and the engine left.

The name starts with XC-, like XC-27 or XC-2877 (Compared to the C-47 of the military DC-3)

Did it appear around the time the comet appeared?

It first flew in 1950, so a few years later I think

I've searched all the books on aircraft history and never found it! How did you get the idea for this aircraft?

The following is an 'XC' with a random number: XC-37? (I'm really "guessing the aircraft now)

Nope, not XC-37, it's XC-***

It's a Fairchild aircraft :)
