Be patient.  Grow your airline, but do it slowly.  Only lease planes if you're absolutely sure you can get a lot more money per month out of the plane than you're paying in the lease rate.  A lot of new airlines kill themselves off by leasing a bunch of expensive planes early on.  It may be nice for their DOP, but they get hammered every month by lease rates.

Slow sustainable growth is better than rapid growth that drains all your money.

Echo what Max said.  If you lease, make sure you're going to make profit.  If not, don't lease.  I had over 100+ aircraft leased last game (at good rates) but was paying 200 million a month on the lease.  I used my profits to pare those down to zero by games end.

Be in it for the long haul and don't expect sudden miracles.

And remember, the leasing price(and gate price, but thats negligible) is not included in your daily profits, so if you lease for $1,000,000/mo and that airplane only makes $40k daily profit, then you just screwed yourself. ($1mil / 24 days = -$41,666.66/day)

Yes, I had to learn this myself as well

I started late last game too (Sept.) in N. Am. but still found empty routes that I could max out ticket prices for and ended up ranked 309 or so.

Right now, I wouldn't even bother leasing. I see DC-3s leased for $1.5mil+ /12months   3 months and you're already over the price you could have paid for a new one.

Exactly.

If you get too deep in debt, ask for a re-start.  No one is born knowing how to do this.  Live and learn.  But please read the wiki for background.

You need to be patient. Stare at the money, then go sleep for 12 hours. Come back and stare at the money again, then go work for nine hours. Come back and stare at the money again. Repeat the process. Believe me, the money would grow under your stare

Patience, basic Geographical knowledge and making the right choices is usually what does it.

What you should do is start from a more out of the way airport, that way, you can give yourself time to expand in a more calm pace than go crazy when more airlines flock to the larger airports, such as MCO, CDG, LHR, HKG, ect. Another thing is try not to lease unless you're absolutly sure you can pay off those fees with what your plane makes (make sure you can payoff the gates as well.) Knowing some basic stuff about the region you are operating in is also a good thing, that way, you know what gates to look for and what to operate to there.
