How profitable are small airports?

Hi all! This has probably been asked before, but after searching around I didn't find anything, so I'm asking it here. :P

I'm a newbie, but it didn't take long to realize that short routes are usually more profitable than longer ones. It did take some money though, because looking back I made some poor gate investments.

Regarding my question (as I'd prefer not learning the hard way), just how profitable are small airports? Or rather, how big must an airport be for it to be profitable? I've been skipping pretty much everything below 1M passengers, but I'd like to tap into those. I'm not really confident I should fly to an airport with, say, 300 passengers. Or should I?

Thanks for your tips!

It really depends on your base. Flying between airports the have only 300 pax each definitely isn't going to make you wealthy. But if you are based in a mega-airport (some maybe 15 or 20 mil pax or above), you should be fine flying to airports with few pax.

Really?  :o
Well, I am based of a large airport (~50M pax), so I'll give it a try. I guess it can't hurt... :)

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I have noticed that flying to an airport with 0 passengers gives profit, so I don't think it'll hurt you so much.

Not to mention your competition will be little to none.
