The airline commenced operations in the mid 1960s with 2 Fokker-500s on regional routes, but soon began an impressive expansion scheme and the airline is now one of the world's fastest growing operations. The airline was the first to serve all continents, and operates a mixed short and longhaul network from its hubs.
Fleet
Initially, AWA purchased a series of inexpensive aircraft to serve its short-term needs, but in the late 1960s began investing in Caravelle series jet aircraft, the chosen mode of shorthaul transport. For the longhaul division, the airline utilises Boeing 720Bs, 707-320Cs, a VC-10, Boeing 747-200s, DC-10-30s and L1011s.

Future growth plans:
To eventually connect each hub with the other, and to have a comprehensive network served from each hub. The airline aime towards having fleet commonality, but realises that each route is different with different requirements.

AWA is in the Globemasters alliance with AmeriJet, a fine partner with a longterm commitment towards growth and mutual benefits.
