General Chat / Less Planes More $$$ For Maintenance
« on: May 10, 2008, 09:16:46 am »
How can we find out the maintenance cost for each plane. I am wondering if the planes I am leasing out are actually draining money from me rather than giving me money.

I would advise (and I know I am biased here) that you lease planes. It allows you to expand a lot faster, making it more fun and giving you more money to buy planes with later.

Any flight simulator should work with 32 Mb video card(you may need to lower settings a little), even Microsoft Flight Simulator X supposedly works with it. Here is a discussion on flight simulators, it should get you started. There are lots of good free ones available.

Once you have found a flight simulator, search the web for instructions on how to repaint for that specific simulator, I think it varies. Usually there will be a file which has a flat version of the outside of the plane. This can be edited like a normal picture (you may need to download something to convert the files).
Like I said before, when you have found a flight simulator, look on the internet for instructions on how to repaint planes for it.

The S in Spirit looks a bit squashed, I think it should be wider (perhaps just lengthening the top). But it is nice.

You pay all monthly fees (leasing planes, gates etc.) at the beginning of each month. This means, if you have very little money available, you will go into negative. Don't worry, that's normal.

One reasonably easy way to make the liveries is to use a flight simulator (if you have one). There are many tutorials for repainting planes on the internet. It is not that hard once you get the hang of it (you may even be able to cheat a little, by downloading and modifying a livery made by someone else, there are no shortage of liveries on the internet, although you should acknowledge the original creator when you post it).

General Chat / 9,200 registered users. What to do when we hit 10k?
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:44:41 am »
Are you going to give something special to the 10,000th airline to register? Off topic a bit, how come the airline IDs are greater than 10,000 if there aren't that many players yet, are they just random numbers?

General Chat / Maintenance costs when leasing
« on: April 27, 2008, 04:27:44 pm »
They might agree to pay maintenance if they are getting a cheaper rental. The idea is, in theory, if maintenance is paid for by the renter, there will be a rental fee charged by the owner. However, in practise, it is likely people would not offer rentals any cheaper just because they don't have to pay maintenance.

It makes sense that the owner of the plane maintains it. It is like renting a car, you pay for fuel etc. but the rental company takes care of the car. Maintenance is a long term thing, it is better to leave the maintenance with the owner so that only a single company is maintaining it, rather that lots of different companies rent it (planes may only be leased for a relatively short time).

The "Miscelaneous Revenues" and "Miscelaneous Expense" on the Operations Department page should be "Miscellaneous". Also, should that be "Expenses" (plural), as I assume there are multiple expenses.

I think it is the owner of the plane that pays for maintenance. The person leasing the plane pays for fuel, flight costs, staff, gates, miscellaneous expenses etc.

General Chat / What would you buy with 100 mil?
« on: April 27, 2008, 04:27:59 am »
I came back after a few days away and had heaps of money, so I bought 9 MD-81s (€511,753,347)and an A300 (€139,377,122). Total: €651,130,469. In one spree I spent more than a third of my total spending on aircraft.
