Game Strategy / Re: The MD90s

There is also the 'player' factor here.  Many of the players are young enough they do not remember McD as an active player in the commercial aviation world.  They also don't see the airlines they idolize or want to emulate using McD aircraft.  Other than a few airlines using them in Europe, American(who probably suffers more bad press than any airline really deserves), Northwest and Delta.  There simply isn't a significant example for fans to want to model.

How many McD aircraft are being operated in the Austra-Asian environment at this time?  The game's sizable fan base in these areas would have a smaller experience base with McD aircraft.

I'm enjoying it so far.   Its not really a big change as I like to try and emulate a more realistic connecting schedule. Having massive, over-sized aircraft at the start threw me for a loop to begin with.

General Chat / Pretend Historic Airline Ads

For those that remember me... I still have some of these saved....
For those that don't.. One of the things I like about this game vs others was the ability to create a more realistic complete airline representation. Its one of the reasons I wore out a copy of Airlines 6...

One of the things I did was attempt to create a brand for my airline with FF program details, ad campaigns, slogans and names of important company officers..

Here are some of the ads I created over the rounds.  I will include some details where I can remember them.

This was my very first one.  It originally appeared at another game.  The idea of that airline was deep discounting, bottom feeding budget airline.  The original picture came a from a Mesa Airways investor relations picture.

This is from the same game.  The theory was my little airline used all leather seating on every plane no matter what.  I don't know where I got the original photo..I suspect I 'borrowed' it off the net.

The next series was from when it was a single world here.  I was positioning my airline as a single class, all business class airline(think Midwest Airlines).  I didn't do the entire 1 euro price drop thing.  The first two photos are from the destination cities tourism departments, the third is from a RL travel company ad.

This was a simulated newspaper ad touting the alliance I was in here(the precursor to the USG).

This was from a round when I had competitor that wanted to race to the bottom on fares and create .5 routes all over. This was before the .5 route limitations were added.  The tag line on the ad read "Favorite Home Town Airline" to represent the fact, I carried many more passengers to and from Kansas City. Also with more realistic frequencies business passengers would have preferred my airline to his.
The original photo came from the Seattle tourism bureau.

This one is from the very first 1950's round here on AM. The idea behind my airline was service from all the small cities to Chicago to beat train service. I admit, I was one of the players pestering Stephen to add earlier years rather than just repeating modern era rounds over and over.  Honestly, I wanted 70's and 80's added.  Stephen tricked us and put in a 50's round.    The original photo came from a museum brochure I got in Chicago.  Even though the round started in 1950, We operated from O'Hare.. which didn't exist...   The round was ALOT of fun.

Personally, I prefer the Vegas or Stockholm ones to the rest.  I love the colors I was able to use with those photos.  Anyone else want to share???

Doug... I may have some saved on my PT account I will see...

I first met Stephen, while playing a different airline game, where the game had some good technical ideas, but powergamers repeatedly exploited its flaws. Since they were also premium players the devs had no desire to change that scenario.  I saw Stephen was developing this one and tried to register.  Back then only 50 players could play a round, so you had to wait until a slot opened up to get to play.

I have played on and off since those days.  I actually kind of miss the pink theme.  I do like the new scheme, but the pink is nostalgic to me.

Edit: I found a few....

Both of those were created by Singapore Air with my input as to how I wanted them..  Really nice work...

VA.... Its okay if he doesn't consider me one of the experienced players.  I find enjoyment in different aspects of the game.  If Stephen ever offers the ability to run feeder for other airlines, you know I will kick everyone else's tail at it.  Until then.. I still have my sub-200 player number to console me.

Virgin Serbia...  I'm not disagreeing or attempting to push an idea on your world.  They are your credits do with them as you please...  I'm simply showing you that an idea of how a RL schedule compares..
I did a couple of tests for UA and AA on a typical business passenger driven day...  I only did one way to save myself some time.

FEB 28th 2011
ORD-ATL
UA
7 flights under UA code.  1 under CO and 1 US coded flight
3 E170
3 CRJ7
1 320

The CO coded flight is a DH8 to CLE, then a CRJ to ATL
The US coded flight is a 320 to CLT then a 319 to ATL

AA
7 non-stops
7 CR7
1 via DFW
MD-80's
1 via LGA
MD to LGA- CR7 to ATL.

Personally, I would love to again play in a world where people didn't just click grind themselves to the top of a meaningless leader board.

I like the concept of the idea.   WAAAYYYY back when, the type of play you are talking about did occur...

But I will present some counter-points to your arguments...

Standardizing your fleets....

Take a look at Aeroflot's historic fleet.  They operated every type of Soviet built aircraft...
For a more modern example... Era Alaska.  They operate a VERY diverse fleet for such a small airline.  Their web page shows 8 types of aircraft, and I know they operate at least one or two more types not shown.

Yes, these are two of the more specialist airlines out there but they do meet your criteria.

Reasonably sized aircraft...

I will be glad to use your chosen route pairings...

ORD-ATL
I have ridden both CRJ-200's and ERJ-140's on this route.  At the time neither United(CRJ) or AA(ERJ) wanted to invest much capacity on this route, but needed to maintain a presence to preserve their high end passengers and business contracts..  To be honest I have flown the Canadian Crippler(CRJ-1/2) to most of the major US business markets from ORD on United/AA/Delta.

Until there is a coded-in competitive disadvantage for too few frequencies, you will not see players adopt a reasonable frequency model.  I would love to see a more 'feeder-based' idea of play though.  The concept of an Airbus model landing at an airport with 4k annual passengers just is not a realistic one.

I know this is gravedigging...But I can give you an honest answer as to why ALOT of smaller regional airports in the US might have semi-goofy names...  That is the name on the FAA database I used when I orginally submitted them.  The database lists city and state in a different column than name.. At that time there was no way to enter the city info.

Is it going to make an enourmous difference as to whether is listed as Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is the D-base or as Springfield, IL ??  Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is what the FAA calls it, so that is what went into the D-base.

I find myself in the same situation.  I like the set-up of PW 129.  The set-up for World 280 doesn't thrill me at all.

We've got about 15 inches on the ground.  Most of its been here since Thanksgiving.  Woke up to a nice brisk temp of -7F..  Luckily the wind chill was only -16F this morning.

In RL???   You are toast...

In the AM world... as long as you dont have a bunch of competing airlines on the same sectors ANYTHING is profitable...  Its all a matter of how profitable....
