Game Strategy / Re: Help at beginning airlines

As another a little side note, you generally make more money on lots of small planes flying lots of routes than one big plane flying less routes - so your probably better off buying the smaller planes.
Advice also given in first reply...  ;)

Sorry to be nitpicking, but isn't Hong Kong returned to the PRC (mainland China) already?

(I mean in 1997, which would be 7 years after the starting date of your world.)

Of course!  Just join the world and don't put in anything for the password.  (It says it requires a password, but that's just an empty string.)

Small planes, small planes, small planes.

Cheaper aircraft can be acquired for less so that you can open more routes faster. The number of routes you have open is the single most important factor in determining your income. Get those short hop flights on some fast planes with moderate seating capacity... cheap (10 million or less per plane strongly suggested, with at least one plane type in the fleet of 5 million or less).

On my own account in public world 461, in the Middle East, I am running a bunch of VardaxServ AeroHotter aircraft, which are a mere 1.2 million each, but which seat 19 and thus can be put on a few flights for a strong profit relative to aircraft price.

Technically, we don't have to be consistent...  ;)

With no meal service on an 11 hour flight, you better hope somebody's brought enough peanuts for everybody.  :lol:

Raising dinner to $30 while keeping the rest at $24 caused profit to go from $4514/hr down to $4474. So, yes, apparently all the items are basically equivalent. And the optimal price is about $24 each...

Okay, so here are some of the results for my tiny airline... passenger load being held constant...

$25/per any item (meal/snack/drink/alcohol) -> $4502/hour [day]

$30/per item -> $4239/hour

$24/per item -> $4514/hour

$27/per item -> $4440/hour

$23/per item -> $4508/hour

$25/per item [again] -> $4502/hour [still]

This suggests to me that, when setting prices the same across the board, something between $23 and $25 is optimal.

I'm now checking with some mixed prices... starting by increasing the price of dinner only.

A - strategy A is to treat it as like any other route made for profit

B - strategy B is to open 25 gates at each hub and run some multi freqs or .5's between them, excessively, so as to secure those rented slots for later use or trading

C - there is no C! there are, incredibly, no network benefits of giving a good pipeline between two large bases fed regionally

Ya, looks like I actually just ran two tests at $25 ... and across the whole airline ...

My 3rd test at $60 prices yielded zip ...

http://www.airlinemogul.com/manual/index.php/Admin_Panel

'Any changes to the meal and drink prices only affect routes created or edited after the change. In order for other routes to reflect the new price, you must edit the route. '

...looks like the manual is out of date...

An initial hypothesis is that travelers purchase 2.5 of the items regardless of pricing...

2.5 x 24 pax x $50 = $3000
2.5 x 24 pax x $25 = $1500

total $4500, off by $2...

... more testing may tell ...

To set up a test, I am tweaking the meals in the smallest airline I have...

I started by putting $25/per for all services on one route, and $50/per for all services on another route.

Each route carries 12 full seats roundtrip, total 24 passengers per day [hour].

In the first hour, I got $4502 revenue from the 48 passengers.  That's $93.79 a head!

(Yeah, I'm not using the euro symbol...sue me :P)

I'll report with further data. For the second day [hour], I've set up both flights to run at $25/per on all service.

I started a game in the year 1921 in the city of Cairo. I was given a pair of planes that could go no farther than 243 nm (so-called "Farman"  :roll:) and a little 500,000 chunk to spend. I quickly spent it. I looked at my balance sheets, and it looked like my airline would be unprofitable. I started to panic.

Then I looked at where my expenses were, and cut back. I returned gates at cities that I'd purchased by accident but would not be able to fly to because my craft were so short-haul. I returned all the extra gates out of Cairo. I tweaked the heck out of the routes of my two planes so that I hit all but the smallest city in range with a 1-per-day flight, with a 1.5-per-day flight to the largest city in range. It was, in a way, rather much like running a real airline... scrimping scrimping scrimping to rake in a profit...

At the end of it I had about 50,000 euro profit per hour and monthly gate fees of 750,000. If you do that math, you will see that 15 out of 24 hours are spent paying for the gates, but 8 or 9 hours made me a profit of 400,000 or so per day.

So what to do next? NOTHING! This is important in getting out of the hole. Once you are as profitable as you can make it, sit on your thumbs until you can order some better aircraft.

A few days days later, I ordered a couple better planes for 1.5 million. Now the airline is saved and so are my 30 tokens.

(Hope this helps...)
