General Chat / Lost interest
« on: May 11, 2009, 11:02:01 pm »
I must confess - I've completely lost interest in this game. Frankly, I'm not sure what the challenge is anymore. I was doing relatively well for awhile, then the airline almost went bankrupt - I closed almost all routes, sold most of the planes, and have been slowly gaining cash - but what is the point?

Anyone else can relate?

True, it is a little too easy, but nevertheless, fun in its own right.

BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID!!

Oh, I see... so the answer is GREED.

I am also having fun, but my motivation is to try to create a realistic airline, using a fleet mix and routing structure that makes sense for my carrier and ultimate purpose, to bring people to my sunny Paradise. That is why operating a Concorde from Barbados to Beijing, China just because I can isn't quite appealing to me.

Nevertheless I press on with my idealistic dribble.

I've been playing for a short while (PW166, Paradise Caribbean), and have quietly grown my fleet up to 11, and frankly am happy with my progress thus far. But I am really curious about some other airlines that have huge fleets, not to mention almost every aircraft type under the sun. Why such large fleets? Why so many types? Why a world-dominance route structure?

It would be interesting to me why people do that.

Game Strategy / Re: The stupidity of Multifreq

Hmmm... I always saw 0.5 freq flights as "what can this plane do in a 24 hour period". In other words, for long haul I may only be able to fit two 0.5's in a day. So I do LHR-BGI, then BGI-CDG in 1 day. Tomorrow is the reverse.

For short hauls, I may do a full day of round trips, but I may have a route that is more profitable as one way, so that might be my last flight of the day to overnight at my out station, before returning the next morning. Make sense?

I just bought my first two 767-200ER's for long haul from the Caribbean to Europe, and I only use 0.5 freq, and still have to cut my fares to make a barely-respectible load factor - my personal minimum is 75% Load.

I was looking at another 762 to push into South America, Africa and other points in Europe, but now I'm not sure anymore... and the range on my 737-300 is limited from here.

Pseudoswede, I hope you enjoyed your stay here in Barbados!  :D Since you're into aviation, did you get to the Concorde Experience?

Well seafly4fun, you're still a baby...

Brian, 42 years old, live in Barbados in the Caribbean (note the spelling - NOT Carribean!!)
Former private pilot, former aeronautical engineer, so that explains my facination/addiction to aviation...

Great airlines flown on:
BA, SAS

A/C flown on (commercial pax only):
Boeing 707/727/737/747/757/777
Airbus 318/340
Lockheed L1011
Douglas/McDonnell Douglas DC-9/MD-80
DeHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter/DHC-7/DHC-8
BAe Trident/146

Favorites:
All, I guess

When I'm not playing AM:
"I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go" (sung to a favorite Disney tune) - but we own the company so that's not too bad

MrOrange, you didn't check it carefully. The Fokker 50 turbopros are on my Caribbean routes, the 737's are for the Americas, and eventually the 767's are for Europe.

Naturally I'm not talking Real Life!! Been there, done that.

And I realize the only way that I'm clawing my way up right now in AM is that I don't have competition, and that I have ridiculously low fares in order to keep yields kinda high - I avarage about 91% load factor on 21 destinations with 4x Fk50's and 2x 732's (that I need to exchange with a pair of 734's or 735's - any for sale?)

Now, if AM allowed a Cargo version of this game, THEN I'd make a killing!!!

Game Strategy / Paradise Caribbean - my strategy?
« on: December 21, 2008, 07:20:14 am »
Simple, really. Don't go bust!!

In reality, flying in the Caribbean is a nightmare, due in part to the economics of short sectors, heavy baggage loads, high frequency demands, and passengers with a small pocketbook. Each island is its own country, each wants its own 'national' airline, but no one has the cash. So right now there is only one game in town (LIAT).

My strategy? To do what others have tried and failed out of TBPB/BGI Barbados - a carrier operating a small fleet of regional turboprops, and medium & long range jets linking North America and Europe to the Caribbean paradise I call home.

Eventually I'm targetting US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, UK, France, and most major points in the Caribbean with a mix of Fk 50's, B737's and 767's for long haul.
