Consider this: A Boeing plane carries only so many passengers. Now a Fokker running at sufficient frequency can rival a Boeing and carry approximately the same number of passengers if not more, given enough frequency.

I get this... and I was informed that if your alliance stops having a hub in that city, it won't let you edit the route but it will let you close it.
