Title: I Need Some Help!
Post by: blue25 on April 03, 2009, 10:23:05 pm
I am doing a world geography project on The Netherlands. If any of you have anything interesting about the country/pictures and whatnot, please PM/post here to me! I am making a power point for this project and I am calling on the smarts of the AM world to help me out. If you live in The Netherlands, you could be a big help! ;)

Sea Level Goes up, The Netherlands go down, need I say more? Although I've been reliably informed they have extremely good regional governance.

Yup half of Holland lives under the (current) sea level.

The most interesting case is that most of our citizens and the vital parts of the economy are located in the west, which is under sea level. But hey we're famous for our dikes, and making land out of nothing (for example the Palm Islands in the UAE), so i guess we'll survive afterall. And who really cares about global warming and the rise of the sea level ???

Btw i'm living in Holland, so Blue25 if you've got any specific questions, post them here and i'll try to answer them.

First of all - my teacher wants us to find interesting information such as landmarks, culture, geography, and everything along those lines. I was thinking for an interesting city I would do Utrecht or maybe Amsterdam - both seem really cool. ;)

Well i would recommend you Amsterdam, as that is the capital and there's lots of good stuff available on the internet (wikipedia is your best friend in this case i suppose).

I know MrOrange would recommend Utrecht, i love that city too btw, but i think there's just less to find about than about A'dam. Afterall it's more than 3 times smaller.

Some landmarks of A'dam which now come into my mind.
- Build on water
- Lots of big and small Canals (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AmsterdamLuchtfotoBmz.jpg)
- The central train station (well not at the moment :D)
- Royal Palace at Dam's Square
- De wallen, Red light district
- Museum Square with the museums (Van Gogh House, Diamond Museum, National Gallery of Art, City of A'dam museum) and the Concert Hall.
- Schiphol airport (well it's actually not in a'dam, but hey, who cares, nobody in the world knows the municipality where schiphol is actually located).
- Amsterdam ArenA football stadium
- South Axis (Zuidas); the financial and legal firm center of Holland, most skyscrapers are located here.
- The endless amount of bikes. (though this isn't specific for A'dam, it's more specific for the whole of The Netherlands

Severnaya, as you might not know, Utrecht beats Amsterdam on at least one point: Amsterdamned had most of its canal chase scenes shot in Utrecht because the canals there are much, much cooler :P

Let's see, Utrecht.
- Built near water
- Lots of canals as well
- A bigger central train station than Amsterdam
- No palace, sorry
- Smaller red light district, but with house boats
- Hilversum Airport with its grass runway (And Schiphol Airport lies in Haarlemmermeer, IIRC)
- Galgenwaard Football Stadium (which is smaller but better-looking :P )
- No South Axis, but that does mean we don't get problems with subway construction projects that cause entire streets to drop a couple of feet
- Endless amounts of bikes, most of which are in the canals
