Title: How much cash do you keep?
Post by: Virgin Serbia on September 13, 2008, 10:04:41 pm
The question is simple, how much cash does your airline have.

Do you spend it as fast as possible, or do you save vast amounts? And how much does you airline have at the moment?

My strategy is to save up money, and only purchase new aircraft in larger batches every now and then, with most new aircraft replacing older types. My airline currently has €630.000.000 in cash. My DOP is 11.5 mio...

Most of the quick expanders buy as many planes as fast as they can...
Why would you buy planes in large batches?
Every hour that you could have a plane on routes means an hour without the plane's profit....

I use it up as quick as I can - so for 80% of the day I have negative money (probably not the best idea but its working ok). I have a dop of 6 and a half mil and my my airline value is 130.000.000 so you have 5 times the value of my airline in cash. My not spend it? If you spend that, your DOP could increase so you have 300.000.000 a month - thats my 2 cents

Why? I dont have time to open new routes all the time, and it opens the possibility to replace all my aircraft of a certain type very fast, and expand. Thus i keep the game easy (for me), and i keep costs low...

I can order 10 737-800 if i want, and have them all delivered by Friday afternoon. I could not do that if i ordered just one at a time...

Generally I try to keep €100 million just in case.

You're eventually going to get hosed by maintenance fees. Might as well spend it all before the month change.

Fine then! Just requested 5 737-800s and 2 777-200ERs from Skylite. That should keep my funds down for a while :D

The benchmark I like to keep is that if I'm not negative in cash for the first year, something's seriously screwed up.

In the evening I spend my money on 1 large ac, 2 180 passneger ac and 3-6 50-100 ac, around 20+ mil DOc it seems like a good strategy

at the moment in one of my testing worlds I have upwards of probably 20billion lying around. I have already about 400 aircraft with dozens more bases. I plan to still expand but I will donate some virtual money to virtual charities XD

I spend all at once, or ill save for a plane. Once in World 6, i saved for a week and had 2 billion saved or something, just to buy lots of A320's coming out at the month change.  :)

I normally come home to enough cash to buy another 733 and I spend the remainder on ATRs/ opening a new base (W140). What's the point in having money on AM if you don't spend it? You can't do anything else with it.

big planes aren't profitable, you should stick to medium sized planes if you want to outgrow your competitors

It all depends on whether I'm expanding my airlines or not.
If I'm expanding, I usually wait until the end of the game month before doing a big spend up on a large order of aircraft.
If I'm not expanding, I just let the cash roll in and save it all for later, or I if I get bored I buy a whole lot of long haul aircraft. In W10, I currently have  €6,105,069,700, which I'm about to spend on 77Ws to replace my aging fleet of 772s, some of which are nearly 8 years old!

I spend it! But rarely spend enough to where I am in the red. I am a responsible airline owner :)

Especially if you have an aggressive plan for spending the cash (such as increasing your route network and buying new planes), going in the red is no big deal.  One of my airlines (worth $1.5B) went very slightly in the red today for one turn.  Its no big deal because I know I'll get out of it very quickly....

Hey,

I'd suggest that having 600million cash on hand when you are only getting 6million profit from routes per hour is quite extravagant/lazy... it means not doing anything with your money for over 100 hours (more than 4 days), which makes no sense, especially because an airline with only 6million profit from routes per hour should still have ample opportunity for aggressive expansion.

I'd suggest that a more rewarding strategy would have been to do something such as:

(1) Look at bank balance of 120 million or so when you get online.
(2) Order aircraft so that you have about 1 million on hand.
(3) Look at the aircraft you have with unused hours.
(4) Rent gates at your hubs so that you can assign all of these planes to routes. (This is because you can go only slightly in the red when buying more than 1 gate at an airport.)
(5) By this time you will be negative. Continue going negative with the single "OCP" purchase of destinations and assignment of planes.
(6) By the end of this, you might be in the red for 20 or 30 million, but you will have increased your profit from routes per hour by a million or two.

That means 24-48 million more when you log on the next day to do it again (and for the indefinite future, since you now are pulling down 7-8 million instead of 6).

(Apologies for resurrecting a semi-moribund thread...)
