Title: Android Users - Basic App Test
Post by: TTA on May 04, 2010, 02:42:39 pm
This is now defunct. I'm moving on to V2

So I got board and wanted to learn basic app scripting for Android platform. I copied a generic template and created a quick launch Airline Mogul app. Basically what it does is installs the traditional app launch button on your menu but instead of running to the browser and having to enter the site in, this goes directly to the full site. To be honest it's nothing you can't do on your own by just opening the basic browser, but hey, it's much more fun to have the AM icon there.

Install Instructions:

Turn on "Unknown Sources" by going to Settings -> Application Settings. Then check the box and click OK.

Next download ( or use ) barcode scanner and scan the square barcode below.  If you don't have barcode scanner simply enter the following web-adress into your browser and it should download do the same thing as the barcode... Download and install.

Note: I'd love to learn more, one of the things I want to do is have a button where you can click for either the game, forum or manual and it would go to specific sites for each. Though since AM is not completely mobile friendly this will have to wait.

Clear Cache. Go into the application settings and clear the cache. It will take up extra space.

There my be some glitches since good parts of the source are copied. :/ I kept messing up so I had to copy the original example provided by Google.

Looks interesting. Pitty I don't have a phone running Android so I cannot try it out.  :( I'll have to have a chat with you at some stage about it anyway,

I know this is a little late, but AT&T won't let me download it because it's not in the market :(

Aw. :( You may have to turn on unapproved apps on your phone. I know I had to, however my phone is not locked into ATT's rules... I just use their network. :) <3 Unlocked phones.

There is not much to it. It just uses the browser but displays a nice little icon on your app menu.

I was in the process of researching on how to make another app that gave quick links to different parts of AM (Game, Forum, Wiki, IRC), however I stopped in favor of working on some other website projects. I do plan on trying it again.

However, lets hope someone who knows how to professionally make apps might pick up and develop something nice for us smart phone users that's AM based. ;)

Version 2

So I decided to start experimenting with a new program and have been working on a new app. It's not 100% ready, but I'm liking how its turning out for it's goal. The general idea of it being a neat app to have that creates a quick launch system to a few of AM's main pages. It has a Home, Forum, IRC, Wiki and Token purchases link which launches the browser to those particular pages.

The whole app has been designed to look like Airline Mogul. You can see the sample below which is a screen shot taken from my actual phone. Hopefully when I get a final done, I'll submit it to Stephen for approval... Of course at the moment it's open to criticism and ideas of what should be added to it. Let me know what you think guys. :)

Were there any plans to create a mobile optimised site? That would go well with a short cut app...

The Purchase Tokens button looks fuzzy in that picture and is a bit too close to the bottom green bar, but other than that, it seems quite good.

I am a bit late in getting to reply to this thread, but anyway it looks pretty good! We could come up with a solution to the purchase tokens button issue, may be take the styling of the buttons/links on the route map page as a basis.
