Title: "Create Route" Slow down
Post by: alanthomasball on January 13, 2009, 01:15:09 am
I am having an awful time with the speed of the server ONLY when I am creating a route. It is only slow when creating the route, not when I am changing Proposed Fare or Daily Services.

Has anyone else found this? Or is this just a General game problem that I missed the memo on?

I have searched for this problem here but have not found it.

I really love this game, but it becomes painful waiting sometimes a full 2-3 minutes for the page to refresh.

EDIT: This was happening in W12 and now W302. (The only games I have been in.)

Your..
- player id?
- browser type?
- connection speed?

And does the page remain loading all the while you wait? or is there anything specific you could tell us?

Thanks.

Airline ID: 16527

I chastise mine self for not being thorough!

It seems that while Safari/Firefox have this speed issue under OSX, IE7/Firefox running in Parallels:WinXP have no issue what-so-ever.
(Net connection checked and OK.)

It appears the browser is having problems loading the View Routes page after creating a Route, but you are unable to load any other part of the AM site while it is doing this. (I assume it is some delay of some sort - Caused by AM or OSX/Browser I don't know.)

It is either an OSX-based browser or OSX-related problem.

I will remove Safari and all prefs from OSX and perform a new install and see how I go. I'll post an update soon.

OK so I COMPLETELY nuked Firefox on OSX and reinstalled from a new download...

Same problem under OSX. Also on Safari.

This wigs me out, as this is the ONLY website that I have this issue with. But I don't have it with XP running on Parallels.

So: Internet connection is out as a possible cause. Also Parallels simply runs on a virtual network connection that is shared from same Network Interface that OSX-based applications use. (so I assume no issue with the way OSX is handling internet connections.)

- Is Safari/Firefox on OSX based on any similar tech?
- Could there be a clash with any new server software tech that AM is using?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Yea, its a bit slower than pre-PW era.... (Possibly being slowed down by the amount of PWs)
Who cares? its wayyyyyyy slower before Will and the rest of the admins did something to solve it....
(A plane would take 20 mins to add 5 routes in the worst case)

*Thanks, Stephen*

Will is usually working away at improving performance, so any improvements are generally down to him.

Apologies, i've been pretty busy lately.

I'll have a look and see if i can't improve the performance of the actual route creation and/or view routes loadtime.  I have no idea why any of our scripts would have a performance bias against a particular operating system, only browser/OS difference I know of that could happen is if our CSS gets a little off it might display differently between Firefox, IE, Chrome, Safari, etc.

It's bad. 2-3 minutes to update or create a new route is no exaggeration. Been going on for at least a week.  8)

The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round. Create a route, spend five minutes reading CNN.com while 'connecting to airlinemogul.com.' Update a route, spend three minutes getting my sports fix on ESPN.com while connecting. Safari, Firefox, it doesn't matter. 6 a.m., 6 p.m., midnight, doesn't matter. Sometimes it works great. Most of the time it's getting really hung up. Getting more and more difficult by the day to enjoy playing your game Stephen.  8)

yeah i would have to agree, right now it is horrible for IE, Firefox is even dogging down as well.  And it seems like my firefox has decided to go on the fritz while renting gates, so now i have to use IE, and that is just horrible.

I can confirm the site is slow with Firefox (most recent version, 3.x).  It seems fine now and of course gets slowest around the hour mark at the end of each game "day"...

Patch idea #2 is passing through betatesting at the moment... hopefully will give us a further improvement.

No bugs reported as of yet, but Will has the logs to work though to analyse its performance.

Except for the fact that the patch didn't work. It is moving as slow as a turtle right now. It is very discouraging

The patch is only in the beta test, not in the proper game yet.

We're bringing in a consultant to try to help speed up the remedy of this issue.

A patch has been attempted, per our consultants guidance. overall it seems to be liking the main game nicely at the moment, feedback would be appreciated.

Any noticeable increase in speed of aircraft selection? anything seem broken (shouldn't be, everything appears to be identical in prelim testing)?

My observation after the patch. There is a noticeable improvement in loading speed when looking at aircraft between manufacturers (takes less than a second now, where as before, takes up to a minute for my broadband connection)

But getting there you have to go through View Aircraft which sometimes takes a while to load (just as slow as the other pages in the Main menu), and then sometimes it loads almost instantly within about 10 minutes of time frame.

Processing route changes (most notably when changing prices) is still very very slow at times on broadband....

Checking the stats on the ac that I own is a bit slower then normal. This is happening as I post this.

I'm not sure if it's just me but the whole site seems to have "phases". It'd be really quick one minute and then a minuet later it'll lag and keep loading pages forever.

Yes I have experienced that as well.  At first I thought it was due to the number of users on at any one time but even if all 18,000 are on at once it should be able to handle it (not knowing the server set yup, of course).  I believe it has something to do with the game itself.

The 'patch' has not worked. Still takes 2-3 minutes to update even just one route at times. Same to create a new route. There are times that the game works correctly and at a normal speed, but it's never consistent. Pretty disappointing, Stephen, that you let this happen to your game. It took something that was a lot of fun and turned it into something very frustrating and unplayable. I'll check back from time to time to see if it ever gets fixed, and will probably start playing again once it does. And yes, I know someone is going to pop in here and say that I shouldn't complain because it's a free game. Two responses to that: First, there are people that have paid for tokens to play. Second, even though a person does have the option to play this game for free, it shouldn't run like a free game. Stephen, you're better than this. See you all on the links!  8)

Patch attempt #2 in place.

server load/cpu usage seems to have dropped, no garauntees it's from the patch though (you're right the game does have something in the way of phases).

in the lab attempt 2 appears to be quicker/lighter/faster than attempt 1 or base.  feedback will be appreciated on attempt 2's success/failure/issues.

Nada. So when does Patch #3 come along?

We're looking into further improvements as we speak.  Question: which step(s) of the create route process are the slowest? Patch #2 focused mostly on the aircraft selection piece, as frankly that's been a very commonly slow query and it appeared this might be the quickest/easiest/best way to improve overall site performance.

If we can get better guidance as to which steps are overall slow, we can tailor our attentions to the worst parts.

I have a 2.00001 (guessing it won't actually impact create route, unless its a bigger lag cause than I'm expecting) that should be rolling out tomorrow.  Again, this 2.00001 that's in the pipeline is not expected to have a terribly noticeable impact.  We'll do our best to get 3 out as soon as possible.

The fare setting piece has been worst for me, when I try to adjust the fare to hit my desired LF...

I must agree.  Editing routes at times takes 2-3 minutes at a time.  I know of a few of my buddies who are playing and who are experiencing the same issues.

Good luck! I have my fingers crossed...

The game is unplayable and no fun when it takes this long just to edit an existing route, not to mention even considering setting up a new route.  8)

I have noticed an improvement from before but it still hangs for occasionally.

I am grateful for the improvements and am willing to endure the occasional hanging at times.  If I am going to edit say...15 routes, maybe 1 or 2 will hang.  However, I use firefox, which let's me try to resend a query if necessary so I never really lose anything but time, which isn't much thanks to the improvements.

Keep up the good work.

Gotten better, but still slow at times (probably just server load)...

Try this... use Firefox and have three Airline Mogul tabs open: one for each route, that way, while the other two are loading, you can edit the third route, etc.  Saves you quite a bit of time if you're in a hurry.  Ultimately, it won't solve the problem, but hey, it makes my life easier, and I'm sure it will for you too.
