Title: Getting tired of 'big guys'
Post by: Seattlepilot on October 05, 2008, 06:26:48 am
I have been playing AM for at least 10 hrs / day for last 10 days. Despite the commitment to the game, i cannot catch up with the 'big guys'.. I lease 10 airplanes to support the growth and then when i want to replace them with bought ones, big guys come and buy more planes. Broker is slow to approve the orders i place.
I never have enough $$$ to buy 100 A319s like some of my competitors do..
What's the solution?

It depends what world you are in, but the big guys are probably just too far ahead. Try a new world, perhaps one of the private worlds.

Stay away from basing in bigger airports until you are really sure you got the hang of it. That is typically the best strategy to avoid massive competition.

When you just start playing, you are annoyed that big boys order 10 ATRs, and you seem so slow. Then you get enough money to order 10 ATRs, but by then the competitor will be ordering 10 737s, and so on...
Your competitors/big boys have spent much more time playing, and thus they have greater finances. You can do the same, with time ;)

Or should I ask: Why is your airline so small?
If youve started in a smaller airport or bought the wrong plane at the first place, you cant blame anyone but yourself.
And being a big guy aint fun too. The competition is too great. Youve to spend nearly whole day sitting in front of the computer....... :'(

Don't use a broker, use the left box "purchase aircraft" after clicking on "airplanes". You'll buy them directly from the manufacturer and most likely your broker is upcharging somewhere between 10 and 33%.

However, most brokers will sell you the thing for -10% and you don't have to pay in full untill delivery so you can use your hard earned cash to grow your airline.

Only official brokers could go to -10% for new planes. We are in demand and we may not be able to provide you with everything you want.
It really depends on want kind of deal you could get when you consider whether to use a broker or not. In some cases, even +33% would be justified from a cash flow perspective.

join an alliance and ask the big guys for planes at 50% their value.
as long as you are determined to succeed, you can. i did myself i joined w10 about 2 months ago and now i'm a big guy (currently ranked 11th). try routes that are less competitive, and planes that are cheap and affordable, yet profitable
try using atr 72-200s as they are cheap and profitable. don't worry if the big guys are ordering airbus a319s as they aren't really profitable at all, and are wasting their opportunity cost buying them.

How big you are is relative to the size of the world. I'm in world #14, which is maxxed out at 1322 players, I'm ranked 76 right now. Moving up from bottom to the lower 100's is easy, but just about everyone above me has more than twice my value flying way more passengers. Its only going to get tougher from here, but it's a fun game.
A few things I and a few friends are doing...
I look at other airlines, what planes they're using and what routes they use them on. I know I'm not the best mogul'er in the world, and have learned a lot from seeing other routes
Once night I had enough cash to finally go trans atlantic and managed to secure the last remaining gate at London Gatwick. The (used) 707 I was eyeing suddenly dissapeared from the used market (it was a rare 'below value' sale..) so I leased a 707 until I could buy a Convair 990, which I'm finally about to replace with my first 747. Don't be afraid to lease but keep it short term. I try not to lease for more than 2-3 months at a time.
Keep the planes full, I try to stay in the 90% range but the more routes you get, the harder it is to do so.
Excel your routes. When I was first starting I would log each route into an Excel spreadsheet with formulas to calculate the cost, proftability, and seat revenue per mile for each route and aircraft. There's too many routes to do so now, but with a smaller airline it's not a bad idea. I turned many $40k-$60k routes into $100k routes doing this.
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Just have fun with it and don't be scared to fly into the big cities, just think twice before creating a base at one.

747s exist only for bragging rights in AM. Over the long term, the maintenance fees will kill even some of the larger airlines.

Expensive planes = only big problems, my strategy is more small planes and they give more profit. And i am in W10 and W14 in Top Ten.

Agreed. After putting it to use I found I was making more money with a freakin' Convair. They'll work until I can afford more long range high yeild aircraft. Plus since they're in demand I can probably make a few bucks in the used market with em'.
