WTF! That's 36 cents(NZ)/litre! Why the hell are you guys complaining? We pay $2.00 a litre here!
Both our cars are diesel, and Diesel here is NZ$1.75 a litre.
That's about US$5.00 a gallon. FOR DIESEL!

I certainly aggree and because the Australian dollar is worth more than the American, it is actually in fact more expensive for Australia. Plus importing and exporting is affected by this rise of the Australian dollar, but that is another topic....

Isn't it in Germany that petrol is very expensive, but diesel is kind of normal, or is the other way around.

Once Diesel was lower than Regular. But these days Diesel is sometimes 1 or 2 cents higher than Regular.

That's impossible 6.72 USD is a lot. U probably mean 0.6 and btw i checked a currency converter 1.92 Ringgits are equivalent to 0.59USD. In the Philippines were 23% is taxed on gasoline it costs about P51 and with the current rate it's about 1.17 USD. Tax on diesel amount only to 15% which costs PHP43.44 equivalent to more or less a Dollar.
For best Diesel prices go to Singapore where it's only taxed at 5%.

Northern Indiana $3.99 a gallon for regular, watered down, crap fuel. Diesel is nearly $4.75 a gallon.
This discussion has been argued many times one every forum I visit. There is no way to compare the US prices to Europe prices...Two completely different worlds,
A...Most of us have NO public transportation what so ever...cant just hop a bus or train to go across town. B...Things are very spread out, a lot of us where I'm at have at least a 15-20 mile drive to work every day. C...Wages are completely different. Europe's high prices have an impact on the normal worker just as much as they do here even though there is nearly a $4 difference per gallon.
I know from what I'm going through at the moment, having an old 1/2 ton truck for work. The higher the price of gas goes the more it hurts. Currently...about $140 a week...JUST for work...I get about 15-20 miles to the gallon depending on length of the drive (highway or stop and go through town) and if loaded, or pulling a trailer. People say to get a little car, not everyone has the option...If I didn't have a truck I wouldn't have a job. 4 years ago it only took about $45 MAX a week. My wage has barely moved since then, maybe a whole $20 more per week...but gas now costs me nearly $150 a week on average. Thats a little over 1/2 my pay check after taxes were taken out :x With the cost of everything going up more and more how are we expected to make it. When driving is your only option for work the price at the pump pretty much just says bend over :?
Some places have it made...Spending 3 weeks in Taiwan I was amazed by the public transportation...we were able to get to anywhere from anywhere by either a bus or train. Only rode in a car 3 times in those weeks...two times was to and from the airport...and then a 3 day trip clear around the island. Mopeds got us around Chung-Li most of the time.
Would never see that kind of transportation system here, not even in the big cities I've been too, like Chicago. Some of it exists...but its not really effective from what I've seen :?

You are right. Places are different. But if an American comes to Germany he has to pay the fuel price we have here - regardless of his wage
Little calculation: My car uses 7 liters per 100kms (about 2 gallons per 60miles). I drive about 50,000kms a year. At EUR1.50 per liter it is EUR5,250 a year. Thats almost 3x monthly net (!) income. But I am in the position not to pay for the fuel as it is a company car :D Still a lot money!

I said roughly - today it is £1.279 for Petrol and £1.349 for Diesel
My dad is a regional sales mangager for Leica (he sells things like microscopes to hospitals), so he drives a lot - last year, he drove something like 40,000 miles, (something like 65,000 km) the company used to pay for it, however, now we have to pay for it and have a petrol allowance, which hasn't gone up since it came in 2 years ago, even though fuel has risen from 85p to £1.30, which seems stupid as it is just another debt ontop of increasing utilities bills and tax.

This is not experienced outside the US, because we have governments that are just a little bit socialist. (in denmark, just under 50%) They looks at the demands for everybody.

Actually the public transport system in Chicago is pretty effective for being drastically underfunded.... Government has nothing to do with in the US... What you are completely ignoring is the distances traveled and the size of the cities... Is there reliable, effective transport from small towns to other small towns that doesn't include trips to a larger town, or being restricted to rail lines??? I live roughly 15 miles from the closest Greyhound Bus stop. They have two buses per day. One headed east and one headed west. I live 50 miles from a commuter train stop and 75 miles from a long haul train stop. The closest commerical service airport is 35 miles, but service there is limited. Now my office is 15 miles from my home and I live in a town of 1500 people. There is simply no economical way to provide a service, whether it be buses, vans, sedans, etc. in these situations.. In the US, there are THOUSANDS of situations like this...

Oh, you'd be astonished how fast you can log so many km with the right job. I myself know 3 or 4 people who have a home office but clock 80-100 km per year. But most of them have company cars since the fuel price is a thing that can deflate a good income very quickly.
Last friday fuel prices rose to €1.52/l for Super (98octane) and standart (95 octance). Diesel was at 1.50. (That's about €6 per American gallon).
On one hand our government says people should take jobs that are 50 or 100 km from their home but on the other hand they put heavy taxes on fuel. Of course there's public transport, but what's it worth to have a bus line to/fro your village where the last bus leaves at 6pm? Should people just tell their employees "f*** you, I'm leaving 5.40pm sharp 'cause I gotta catch my bus!" ?

The problem in the US is that the cheap gas prices are what led to everyone moving out of cities. I know it sucks for everyone when gas prices double, but it's something we'd have to deal with at some point anyway. I feel bad for the people who need to drive trucks and SUV's for work and are getting screwed by the high prices. The problem is that 90% of the trucks and SUV's aren't necessary. I work in a small city, more like a big town, walk or ride my bike everywhere, and park the car everyday but Saturday, when I drive 5 miles to do my shopping for the week. The crazy thing about it is that 50% of the apts and houses around me are unoccupied because people don't want to live in the city. They want their big houses in the suburbs, then they need a big Tahoe or Expedition to drive 20 miles to work, 10 miles to Wal-Mart, 10 miles to the grocery store, and then complain about how much gas costs. Those are the people that make me glad we finally have some sort of disincentive to burning oil. The only thing that's going to help us lessen our dependence on it is for it to cost more. Nothing else has ever worked, nor do I think it ever will in the future.

@Vamerica: If you take a small car and fill it up with 5 people you got way better fuel usage rates than a moped. Plus you don't kill the environment as much
@MAXAir: I never understood the American urge to drive a SUV. They're expensive, they're gas guzzlers, they are huge -> no good unless you are a farmer and complete crap if you live in the city!

They are also more dangerous for everyone. If you are inside the vehicle, it is top heavy, and more prone to rolling than a car. They are also more dangerous to everyone else because of the fact that they are so much bigger and heavier built than cars. Another factor is that they are harder to see out of, so you can more easily run over things (damaging both whatever you run over and the vehicle).

I have no idea why people here buy so many, it's crazy. The only explanations I can come up with is that people need more space as they spend more time in the car. If you're in the car 4 hours a day with a few kids you would need a lot of space. Some people have been scared into thinking they're not able to drive in rain or snow unless you have 4wd or awd. Minivans have been branded as only for moms with kids, so it's not cool for people to drive them anymore. SUV's have basically become a status symbol. Station wagons have been "uncool" since the 70's and 80's, hatchbacks are coming back a little bit, but people still don't like them. I really don't understand the whole thing. A BMW station wagon is seen as any other car, yet a Hummer H3, with about the same space and much less comfortable ride is seen as "cool" because the people driving it must be adventurous people to drive something like that. I think the gas prices going up, while it is going to hurt a lot of people who really don't deserve it, will be a good thing in the long run. Part of the reason a lot of people drive SUV's is because everyone else does and i's not safe to buy a small car. I hope this will help reverse the trend so we don't continue buying bigger and bigger vehicles to protect ourselves from the other vehicles which continue to get bigger and bigger. Sorry for the ranting, I just can't believe people are shocked when oil prices go up after we've been wasting so much of it for so long.

What about Sedans then? I know, they don't offer that much space- but IMO they're much cooler than any station wagon+ they use less fuel. And I deem the idea of a 2WD drive being unsave as kinda crazy. I mean ok, if you've got a backwheel-driven, unstabelized 250 hp sportscar that may be true, but if you can't handle such cars you should just try frontwheel-driven ones. They're much easyer to handle for drivers who're afraid of the power...

I don't know. It might put an ending to our mobility and to the freedom of going wherever we want to go. And I don't like that idea very much :?

Well, once people get used to drive 4WDs through downtown Chicago it's very hard to tell them that a Smart or the bus might be a solution as well. But time& the forces of economy will teach them sooner or later (the only question is: Do we want that to happen? Usually drastic changes offer much ground to drastic politicians!).

Sedans are good too, but I'm talking about cars with similar space. Sedans are seen as too small to be a family vehicle. I would love if everyone here could drive sedans, but the reason people bought the SUV's in the first place is the size and utility so I can't see people going from an Expedition down to a Civic or Accord. Hatchbacks and wagons do offer the utility that people want, since it has plenty of place for all their stuff.
As for the safety, I agree with you 100%, the people who are scared of 2wd are the ones who think you should be able to drive the same way whether it's dry or snowing. They are the same people who cause most of the accidents on the roads. I hate to say it, but they've basically been dumbed down, they have 4wd, traction control, stability control, and then think you can just drive like normal when it's snowing.
I don't doubt that it will reduce our mobility and freedom to go anywhere we want to whenever we want to, but I don't think it's entirely a bad thing. We're still a very wealthy nation, when people want to go somewhere, they can and they will. My hope is that they will cut out a lot of the pointless driving though. When 4 people all leave the same street and drive to the same place for work, there is obviously some unnecessary driving there. I know there are some people who really don't have a choice, they live far away from work and there is no mass transit or car pool they can take there. These are the people that are going to be hurt. However, for every one person like that, there are 10 more burning oil unnecessarily. If we all just cut out the unnecessary trips we would still be free to go wherever, just at a slightly higher cost.
Politicians got us into this mess, nobody believes them anymore that they're going to come into office and do something that will get gas prices back to the way they were. People are realizing that they need to change something themselves. Our president and politicians pride themselves on the fact that the government is not the solution to everyones problems and for once I have to agree with them. They've been saying we should keep buying stuff, keep using resources, buy a big house in the middle of nowhere, a couple cars and be free to do whatever we want, but when things start going downhill they offer absolutely no solutions. All they offer are stupid ideas like ethanol or more tax cuts. Economic pressures are sadly the only thing that is going to get us out of this mess we're in.

Ask the major car companies why they don't start to produce them? Im sure that there is a huge influence from politician and oil magnates to keep them making fuel running cars. Take note that the tax on fuel is one of the major income of the govt. regardless the country.

why don't everyone just switch to solar or electrical cars.....
Well... a) They cost a *vegetable*load of money. b) They often have bugs c) Try to get a solar/electrical car that can carry 5 passengers for 100 km at a speed of at least 80 km- and you'll have me convinced.
Of course the 3rd point isn't that important if you live in the city and don't have to do long trips in your car. The first point however applies to city dwellers as well as to people who live in landly areas.

All I need is a electrical / solar car that carries 8 people and able to going uphills @ 20 km/h with a gradient of 40 degrees. And yes, that road is the major road to my home.

Add to that the fact that in some places you can go days without sun, and batteries can behave in strange ways when it's cold outside.

I think your last point should fall under my b) point: I live in Middle Europe and I've enough troubles with the car batteries as it is (luckily I live on a hill so if the car battery dies I can simply start the car by letting it roll).
Also you have pretty long recharge times for the batteries and if they go bust that's very expensive.

There are calculators on the internet where you just have to type in the number o liters and you'll get the number of gallons. Don't mix up the American& Imperial Gallon though!

Forgot to mention in NZ diesel cars have road user charges- $300NZ (About €150) per 10,000km. One of the more stupid things the NZ govt has done, it discourages diesels which are more economical/environmentally friendly than petrols!
Because fuel is more expensive now, I'm looking at buying this as a first car as it's a fairly small engine, but still quick.

In HK, it's somewhere about 2 USD, both petrol and diesel. However, HK government MAY lower the diesel tax (or whatever it is called).

What are you talking about both Sterling and Norwegian are losing money just like SAS. Sterling although only had a loss for 20 million DK last year, but Norwegian had around 500 million NOK. So keep your mouth shut until you know better! SAS has problems I don´t deny that please all other airlines have too.

Title: Whats the price of your fuel?

Ships cant run on water even if they are powered by hydraulics. Besides, i dont see how Hydrolics can make a propeller rotate 50 times per minute. And powering ships with water in the Hydraulics system is no good either, you would need a pump to move the water through the system. The pump uses fuel...

SAS is Sterling service for much higher price. Its better for the passengers. SAS is an old and useless airline that could have done a lot to become better, but they have only decreased service. SAS was a world class airline, but they removed service to LCC standards, insisting that their good reputation would keep the passengers coming back.

Have you been on a SAS flight inside Europe, not being on Business? And on a Lufthansa/Swiss, Finnair flight? SAS is more expensive than all those, and has the lesser service... SAS also neglects passengers in Jutland (the western part of Denmark), and has decided to base most longhaul flights out of Copenhagen, where they compete with Lufthansa. They should base longhauls out of Stockholm, where they compete with Finnair  And besides that, CPH is horribly crowded with shops and passengers

oh, and btw: (Big) ships don't run on Diesel- they run on some byproduct of the fuel production. But Air Hannover International said he wanted to order a tanker full of fuel from Venezuela since he heard that the fuel was really cheap (see the other thread).
