Title: Mac vs PC
Post by: SkinnyRabbit on May 21, 2008, 11:33:50 am
Which should I buy next, a Mac, or a PC?

PC: More software, more users (so more support etc.), Macs are usually more expensive, most computers come with Windows (so if buying a Mac, you may not get the computer you want)
Mac: some say it is easier to use, less viruses
Alternatives
Linux: Free software/operating system, less viruses, more options in terms of opperating system
But... less commercial software than others (free software is often not as good as commercial ones, especially at high end), very few computers come with it installed, can be a bit difficult to get working

This is just for starters, there are lots of other reasons why, search it on Google.

Macs are so much better.  Buy a Mac.  I have a black MacBook and a Mac Mini and they are both wonderful.  I have Leopard on both and they are 100 time better than the Gateway I had before that.  Plus any program you can use on a PC you can use on a Mac now.

Apples support and customer service is so much better than PCs anyways.  Macs are more expensive but will last much longer than PCs, and you can't get viruses on Macs.  Always a good thing to have.  (so if buying a Mac you may get more of a computer than you thought you were getting.)

Macs are very nice and worth the extra money.  I will swear by that.

Lets review shall we.

Old crappy Gateway that had many problems and every time I called Gateway I got someone in India that I couldn't understand and none of the problems ever got fixed and the coverage period ran out.

Next, my wonderful Mac Mini that is now 3 years old and still runs like new.  I have never had any problems with this computer.

Third, my even more wonderful Black MacBook.  It is 1 year old to the exact day actually.  May 21st 1 year ago I open it out of the box.  It has had one problem with the plastic cover where it started to crack open next to the mouse pad.  I called Apple, talked to someone in the US, and had it fixed in just under 48 hours.  No questions asked.

And both of them together.

My brother also has a White MacBook which as far as Apples go it is quite the lemon of a computer.  It has had 4 or 5 problems, but Apple has fixed it every time no questions asked.

Apples customer service is next to none and their computers are absolutely amazing.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! MAC's are not better than PC's. It is a matter of opinion, so dont say things like Macs are better than windows. They are equally good computers, with different benefits and different disadvantages. (Being, from Seattle.... im sure youknow which I prefare).

I must disagree with you.  They are not equal computers.  You buy a $400 PC which is usually the base price for the average PC and you pay $1,200 dollars for the base Apple.  They are not equal.  Yes this is my opinion, sorry that I didn't make that perfectly clear in earlier posts, most people figure that out by themselves.  Besides I can say what ever I want being that is is my opinion, so please don't beat me over the head with a hammer for expressing my opinion.

I used to use PCs.  I used to beat Apple down.  I used to hate Apples.  However I have seen the light now. :D

I do agree there.  The older Macs were not as good as the new ones.  Even just like 8 years ago with the new colored iMacs they were not as good as PCs.  Now though you can run anything you can run on a PC on a Mac.  You can even run windows on a Mac now.

Apple, I love Macs new operating system.  I have tried Vista and don't like it.  XP was pretty good though.

It isn't so much Windows I don't like.  It is more the companies Dell, Gateway.  I don't like the way they run and it seems like Apple prides themselves in what they do much more than those companies.  I just think Apples are all around nicer and easier to use.

Plus, how could I betray a company that supports 50,000 + jobs in WA state.

Sadly, W2K was the pantheon of MS operating systems. If they could've built-in fast-switching in W2K, I would've never upgraded to XP. And there's no way I'll ever upgrade to Vista until I absolutely, positively have to.

The computer typing this message is a vista computer. It sucks, Vista is one of the hardest operating systems to get used to. Hopefully Leopard is much, much easier.

Macs are just as bad as Dells . The software is too limited, the build quality (IME) is crap, and they're just as overpriced (in terms of value) as ThinkPads were when IBM still made them (btw, ThinkPads still rock)! Not saying there aren't any crap PC's out there, though [*cough*DELL*cough*]. AND Apple still insists on that GIANT touchpad button! Its annoying enough looking at it, but its worse when you use it! Its almost like when you press it down on one side the other tilts up like a see-saw! Ok, I am (technically) a film-maker and I have to admit the Final Cut suite of software is good. But then again, Apple BOUGHT FINAL CUT FROM MACROMEDIA! Also, I can't help but mention how crap the Air is. I mean, one USB port, a MICRO-dvi port, and a headphone jack. Thats it. Ok I can understand that it wouldn't fit on a computer of that thinness but being thin doesn't mean as much (of course, unless its as thick as my friend's Dell) as weight, especially for an ultraportable. The ThinkPad X300 has three USB ports, VGA, a headphone and mic jack, and a DVD burner! Without the burner, its lighter than the Crapbook Air. With it, its about .01 of a pound heavier.

Well, there was my rant against Macs...

Does anyone here use Linux/alternative operating systems? I installed it on an old computer I had lying around, and it actually seems to work quite well, although I haven't really had the time to test it. When you consider it is free, it seems good value (especially if you only need to do your average word processing, photo editing, few games etc.).

I frankly like Apple. It's not just the software or useability. Considering the thing sits on my desk close to 24 hours a day and I stare at it for a good 15, aesthetics is important too. And Apple wins in that department.

Dude, bottom line, it's a COMPUTER. Buy whatever you like.

I would say that PCs are better alright for Business Related activities, but I have never used a Mac properly for their supposed strength of Graphics.

If you really want you could do a cost/benefit analysis, as the cost of a Mac is huge compared to a PC.

Get a Mac.  Macs are so much better! :D

And, if you for some extremely strange reason you get tired of the Mac processor, no probs.  Windows can be installed on macs, if you want.  Both systems can run on the same Apple computer. ;)

After trying the mac of a friend for 2 days I'd say I stick with my WinXP computer. I think the mac is rather for people who really often do graphics stuff or those who want a nearly failsafe computer with very few options to kill it

I myself like to try stuff out on my computer, install a new cooling systems, new software and in general I like to find out how the stuff works (and how to make it crash other computers  ). I'd use Linux but in general I just don't have the time and the knowledge to work things out on this operating system (and most of my additional hardware is made for Mac/Win so I'd have to write and install many complicated codecs to use it.

The biggest problems on Windows are
a) That Microsoft is nothing else than a slave to the record/video companies
b) They don't seem to either use their brains or bugtest their programs/patches. For example the new WinXP SP3 had the problem that it installed a certain program on all computers delivered by HP which made many computers with AMD processors crash since it was only thought for Intel CPUs. And have you ever tried to get up a connection between a Vista and a XP computer via LAN? Good luck!
