Post by: iranair777 on May 15, 2008, 09:41:31 pm
I've heard some people use MS Excel to balance their airline. I have a question, How??

What do you mean "balance?"
I use Excel to plan my routes. At the start of the game it's a great way to determine what routes to open without having to hit the Gate Search function all the time.

I use it to keep track of my network. Hubs in columns, airports served in rows, and fill the fields with the equipment used. But that's about all Excel can do for me...

Everything really, from aircraft deliveries to routes

For routes I have one sheet for each hub with all possible routes (as copied from GateSearch). Then I take note of the aircraft ID on each route. Since I have another sheet with my fleet (and info on range, speed and turn time of each plane), a couple of formulas are enough to know exactly how much time each plane flies and, more importantly, how far it can still go.
By using filters I can locate very rapidly suitable routes.
One simple trick is to use colour coding (with conditional formatting) to have adequate destinations stand out from the croud.
For deliveries and such I have a very simple planner (yet another spreadsheet) where, for each (game) day, I have the indication of the real time, projected cash and, of course, where I make note of planned deliveries.

I'm absolutely useless at programming so don't use Excel. I used to use it to sort the aircraft list which is 100% copy/paste compatible with Excel until the developers added the sort function to find the best aircraft(s) for my network.
Gate search results are not compatible to be pasted into Excel (unless you have brains but I don't :D ). I use the rather mundane method of invading country by country, with the aid of google maps.
I simply guesstimate how many more of a certain aircraft I need as I reach the limit of the aircraft's capability.
