Post by: Pavel on May 15, 2008, 07:59:56 pm
Just to wonder, because I'm thinking of doing it in secondary school. Would it be hard you say?

I was doing East Asia Studies at university, and although Japanese is hard stuff, it's miles away from Chinese. Actually it takes some time to get used to it, but once you get the grip of how it works, it's fairly straightforward.

Ego means "I" i guess taking it from the word egocentric which means I in the Centre.
Elenika which I'm sure means Ellenic thus meaning or referring to something Greek.
I dont know greek but i guess that by putting the words together it could mean:
I___________Greek
Speak
am
understand
or anything that makes sense.
Ain't I right?

Depends. Most of the time it means a word and words put to gether form more complex words which are strung together to form sentances. (I know it is a different language, but...) In Mandarin Chinese the word for computer (Dian-nao) literally means Electric brain. However, some nouns are formed phoenetically. For instance, countries, China (Zhongguo), the UK (Yingguo), France (Faguo), the USA (Meiguo) and Germany (Deguo) have actual meanings in Chinese, things like Big Country, Middle Country,... however most others are spelt phoenetically, like Spain (Xibanya) and Italy (Yidali) are spelt phoenetically, there is a smaller 3rd group of countries like japan where both languages use the same characters but these represent different words (I think) Japan in chinese is Riben, but is something completely different in japanese (which in itself has a stem from Traditional Chinese with other languages).

My sister is ennerving me with her Japanese- I ask a question and she responds in Japanese which is idiotic because a) I don't speak Japanese and b) the Japanese words for "Yes" sounds very much like the German word for "No".

What a geek

How can you remember such long a series of letters in English? Look at the word "Japanese", 8 letters. In many of the Asian languages, although they may have more characters, each word is shorter.
