Ouch, all md-80's?? Must be something really serious if the FAA does that, lack of maintenance? Suspicious maintenance records? If it had been the aircraft type more than AA's would have been grounded...

I think it's just age. They're too old to be certified anymore....but that sucks. They have like 270 of them, it's gonna take a while to replace all of them.

from http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/370666.html

The issue stems from an order that the FAA gave airlines in September 2006 - and gave them until last month to meet - about the bundling of wires in the auxiliary hydraulic systems of MD-80 aircraft. The fear is that improperly bundled wires could rub, leading to an electrical short or even a fire. However, no serious incidents have been blamed on the bundles, the FAA said.

Alaska Airlines said the new inspections "are focused on detailed, technical specifications and not safety-of-flight issues."

Thats the problem with having the biggest single aircraft type for domestic flights in the world

American Airlines is now back to normal, the FAA gave the order stating that all MD80's that were grounded can now return to service. American Airlines has also announced the speeding up of the replacement of the MD80's for 737-800's.

Lol, took the easy way out  :D
American cancelled a total of 1,300 flights during the week. 3 MD-80's are the only left in the inspection. American says that everything she be getting back to normal.

Yes, I'm really looking forward (irony!!!) to the day when something like that will happen either to the 737NG or to the A320. Europe is gonna be f*cked :x
(sorry but there is no other word for it- just imagine all 737NGs out- FR grounded, AB practically downed, loads of other carriers having severe troubles)

Those planes have newer technology, that will keep em' in the air much longer than an ol' Mad dog.... some of them are more than 25 years old!
