Well, I read the crosswinds were only about 40-50 km/h at the time of the landing, but nevermind

(I seriously don't want to see a plane landing in 155 mph crosswinds :P )

Back to topic, LH didn't have too much of a good day on Saturday. They also damaged an A346 sitting at FRA (a catering truck fell on the backside of its wing while equipping the galley).

Yes, SkyNews tend to over-exaggerate

Well, if it only was 40-50 km/h that pilot really made an ass of that landing. 40-50km/h is only 11-14 m/s which occurs here at least a couple of times per week.
155mph is way over the top though  Even 155km/h is way too much with 43m/s. 25-30 is plausible but not likely to attempt a crosswind landing. Wind gusts have been measured to 190km/h at some locations, but if that had been the case the airport would have closed.

at the height of winter, when we get big storms, the wind can be sustaned at 50 mph, and they dont typically close SEA, there are delays, but planes still land. :?

This was the average crosswind on that runway at the given time (or so I read).

Crosswinds can be a challenge alright. I wonder did the word "Divert" enter the pilots mind...

Other airports in the area weren't a breeze either. Copenhagen=very windy, Bremen=very windy. Options probably would have been Berlin& Hannover. But that would've been quite annoying for the airline because you couldn't be sure what the wind would do to our infrastructure (they would have had to get all the pax back to HAM, not an easy task when you know that the railway might interrupt its service (it did last year))

Pretty normal approach until the flare when he got hit by what looked like a very strong crosswind. The engines take a few seconds to spool up for a go-around, good flying in my opinion.

They said in the news the 24 year old female FO was in control that time. The pilot took over when the A320's left wingtip hit the ground and he performed a go-around. Lufthansa's statement included that everything went along with the landing procedures and the crew is back in the air again.

Anyway, I am glad that there were no fatalities.

I think the crosswind was 45 knots. We often get that here, but the wind is nearly always Northerly or Southerly, so WLG's runway (16/34) suits the weather well.

Most of these are actually not crosswinds- just really strong Southerlies or Northerlies. You can tell because the aircraft aren't crabbing. Last year we had 180 km/h winds at one point, and the roof of the ANZ Koru Lounge blew off :P

Remindes me of our Hannaku (however you spell it) Evening Storm. 70 mph sustained wind uprooted trees at SEA and smashed throught the glass walkway connecting the huge parking towers at SEA and the actual airport building..... I remember we were going to South Africa that day and I saw countless trees knocked over.....I think there were at least 4 trees blown over at my block.. that was an exciting adventure, as trees where everywhere. Also, the night before, we had very heavy rainfall (1-inch an hour) or saturated ground (we got 16 inches of rain in one month), which caused some unusual flooding.... I think the news said that SEA had to close becuase of to much water on the rwy.... :? Well, anyways, the main freeway running through downtown Seattle had to be closed becuase of like 7 ft of water onver the road  . (I think there was a flash flood at my house :P )

In my active Navy time I stayed about 3.5 years at ETME (closed in 2005). We have had 1/19 which was pretty strange in an area with almost winds from the West. The funny thing was that we were able to find out who was on the approach: a Navy or an Air Force pilot. The Navy pilots were used to the situation but the Air Force pilots always had to fight for the course which you could see by the aircrafts movements.
