I am new to the game, still dont understand the mechanics, but thanks to reading the posts here in the forum, I learned that 1 flight a day to a destination is a great idea (smiles).I hope to have fun here with Airline Mogul, but i am sure that depends on the community here.

Hello Scott and welcome to Airline Mogul! If you need any help, feel free to post in the forums.
Cheers,

Welcome to Airline Mogul (AM)!
Simple mechanics of the game:
You start off after registering and selecting a home base and get one aircraft (this round a BAe 146 due to the short ~2 game year round). After you have done that check the range of your aircraft and fly to airports close to you (routes with the most money are the ones from a high passenger number to another high passenger number one) by renting gates on the gate rental page (usually arranged in order of country) and then you can rent the gate and then start a route with a freq 1 (which is the best way of making money). with the BAe 146 I have managed to fit in about 5 routes, but not sure where you are based so I cannot really tell.
You will have fun with the community her, but just stay away from DKTC  ;)
(sorry, I'm not too good with explaining am I :? )
-
well after reading about the game in the forum, I have decided to be a regional carrier based in the Philippines (I am an american who lives there in the real world) and I have a DOP of 236,000 and I hope to be able to buy a few small planes for national routes that make a tidy little profit. I appreciate the quick replies. I am sure you make good money in Iran (smiles) I work in Iraq and I know the few airlines that fly out of Baghdad are doing VERY good business.

Hey! :x
I am not that bad... as long as you don't cross me :P
-
yeah airlines are making lots of money from Iraq as a fact there r 3 daily flights between Bagdad and Beirut and 1 daily between Erbil and Beirut tickets are also not Cheap they r quite expensive ofcourse coz of security as airplanes dont land the typical way they have to do curves when they land

your weird as in mIRC :P
nah, just kidding, everyone that is here I've managed to make friends with and it is quite easy to do so also, even progressed a little with the creator, stephen  (now dont you get excited stephen  )
-
even progressed a little with the creator, stephen
Define "Progressed"? No you dont get free planes on request. :P
-
Yes you won't get anywhere trying to bribe StephenM,
But if anyone wants to throw a little bit of reward my way...
I am an admin....
I could give you free planes...
Im not saying I will 8)
-
Note that even if an admin gives you free planes, it's still cheating.
Though for the right reward, anything is possible.

hey guys,
I leased a plane from the "planes for lease" screen. When i try to make a regional route with it, it doesnt show up as being able to use it. How long does it take to take possession of a leased plane?

check the range of the aircraft and the route distance
-
i figured it out thank you iran. Having fun with the game now, up to about 350k dop now. I have a couple leased planes and i should have my embraer in a couple days
-
well I am doing ok I think. I have a dop of 437,000 I bought an embraer and put it on a route just inside of its range 2x a day so it makes a decent profit. I leased another small 10 passenger plane for 100,000 and it will make me 3x that a month. I just ordered 2 large (well for me, 50 seat) aircraft with 2000 mile range so I can start expanding from the Philippines a little more. I had 20 million cash but the 2 planes set me back 17 million i think. I am enjoying the game very much. I will keep my eye out for small aircraft for sale to add to my regional roster. the regional stuff doesnt make a huge profit but it pays the bills I think.

i am reading about people recommending that you get a second base near your original. Why is that? I have 23 flights a day out of Manila and they are almost all at 100%. Do you get an advantage with having a second base nearby?
scottj63
-
Two things:
1) You have a plane doing 2x. Perhaps you want to try lowering it to just 1x and, with the hours you free, find another route to put the same plane on. You'll probably discover that you make much more profit that way.
2) When you have plenty of flights from Manila you should indeed start looking for a second base. Now, you're renting gates elsewhere and each gate is good for 10 slots or frequencies. If your second base is not far from your first, you can fly to the same airports you're already renting gates at, thus saving a lot of money on yet new gates. Mind you, creating a base (other than the first one, for free) costs a lot of money. More precisely 50x the cost of each gate, plus you have to rent at least 4 gates there before you can create a base. So, it's not something you should do too early.
-
thank you for the advice, I have changed some flights from 2x to 1x a day with also finding new routes with the saved hours and I have added 50,000 to my DOP. The regional routes around the Philippines are low money routes but a lot of them add up.
-
Indeed, regional routes are not big money makers. However there's also less competition and you can (and indeed should) use smaller and cheaper planes. So you can make up with volume.
-
i am really enjoying this so far. I am up to 1.1 million DOP and have bought a couple more small aircraft from the "for sale" market that are doing well. I finally figured out why you build a second base (laughs) no more gate fees at your existing stops due to the frequencies available. Thank you everyone for the advice and help here. I am on an extended break from work living here in the Philippines and running my airline from here is actually teaching me a bit about where I live in real life due to the research i am doing. Of course my filipina wife thinks this is absolute stupidity. She saw that I have 20 million cash here and she got pissed thinking that I had money in real life she didnt know about (laughing) I told her it was a game and she said "you stupid" (laughing) hard)

That's what I am doing with my airline. I generally have smaller airplanes anyway, and the bigger markets tend to have tons and tons of competition on them. I wanted to run an all-jet airline, but the Shorts 360s I ordered and run are doing extremely well for me. I am also starting to place multiple aircraft on some of my routes (I have two different Shorts 360s assigned on routes such as PIT-BFD/ILG, as well as DCA-LWB.
A few people have given me advice, and so far it's working quite well. I think I might be on my way to having my best round ever!!
-
I am also starting to place multiple aircraft on some of my routes
That's certainly something you can do and it may even work well for some routes. Generally speaking, though, it tends to be a major headache, as you are competing with yourself. A little bit like doing multiple frequencies, only much worse.
-
Not much of an improvement since my last post. I have orders 2 737 business jets and another long range business jet also to expand flights to australia and the middle east from my base in the Philippines. There is another airline that is about 3 times my size putting planes on all my routes also, but it isnt affecting me that much yet. Just had to lower a few prices to bring my profitability back up. I want all flights at 90% occupancy. What I see is that he has much faster and larger aircraft, so I can't really compete with him. I want to lease a 60 seat plane with a huge range but I can't justify the 4.5 million a month for it. That is 150,000 a day plus gate fees. I only have 3 planes that make that much now (laughs)
I am really enjoying the game. My worth is up to 115 million and I think if I could join an alliance in the southeast asian market I would do MUCH better. So if anyone needs someone in their alliance in the pacific, I have like 40 cities I fly too that have generally 90% of their frequencies available. (smiles at his shameless advertising)
Scottj63 (Living in the Philippines for the time being)
-
Saw your (other) post about joining an alliance. Maybe you do not want an alliance in the same area you're doing yourself. The point (one of them, really) in joining an alliance is to gain access to different markets other than the one you're already in.
As for larger competitors with bigger planes, there's no need to worry too much. Unless they start pumping up the frequencies and smashing prices, your smaller planes allow you to stay on the route, charging higher fares. Also, leasing a 60 seater for 4.5M would be madness. You can buy a brand new one for not much more. Or save for an extra day and get one with better range.
-

Yeah, that is the trouble I am having. While it is more realistic than running nothing but 1x frequencies, there are numerous routes I have tried with 2 Shorts 360s, Fokker F28s, or one Shorts/Fokker, and it destroys my profit/LF on the other flight. There are a handful of flights where one has a LF of 70-80%, while the original flight is still at 90% or above.
I will likely start to restructure my services tho, especially with my "Link" service (Shorts 360s and Fokker F28s). Some routes might even get a DC9 in order to compete better with the other airlines...
-
Well I am up to a worth of 141million with a dop of 1.7million. I have 18 planes in the company and 65 fun filled destinations that we fly too. The game is enjoyable. I know my place in the world (smiles) I can't compete with the big guys, so i dont try. I am mainly using small planes for every airport in the Philippines. I am still interested in joining an alliance to open up more gates (read:free) for me. I have 3100 passengers a day and I am glad that planes can't crash (or can they????) because I dont have the cash for the lawsuits (smiling)

No, they don't crash. And they're always on time. It's a beautiful world. :D
I am still interested in joining an alliance to open up more gates (read:free) for me.
What do you mean free? It would be nice, but free they ain't! :P
When you join an alliance you can use your partners bases as if you had created a base there (subject to some limitations). But you still have to rent gates there (and at your destinations).
-
ahhhhhhhhhhh ok, I thought you used your alliance members gates at an airport......... Hmmmm so what is the benefit of joining an alliance.

Well I am doing ok, my dop is about 2.2 million a day and my worth is up to 320 million. A huge airline has moved to Manila and is putting planes on all my routes for lower prices (laughing) Nice strategy. I am doing ok still though, it is fun. I fly to some pretty obscure places and I did that on purpose to see what would happen, sure enough the other guy matched my routes. I bet the mongols are surprised to see 2 airplanes a day there (laughing). I bought my first long range large plane. 189 people range of 5200 miles. It is funny, I am not making very much with the 2 routes I have it on and there is no competition for those routes. I thought the profit margin would be much higher.

doing pretty good, my worth is now 720 mil with a dop of about 4.5 mil a day. I have 32 aircraft including a couple long haulers. I built my own terminal in a midsized airport also. I have a question for the community. I know the game doesnt imitate real life, but come on now. I work in Iraq in real life. I know how much my plane tickets cost from the UAE to the Philippines and to the states, shouldnt there be some consistency inthe pricing inthe game as to real life prices. Seems to me owning long haulers just isnt smart financially when you can only charge 400 euros for a ticket that I pay 800 euros for whenever I fly (laughing)

I had pretty much the same question/complaint a little while back, when I started playing. Namely, I protested that it makes no sense to have a route as London Heathrow to London Gatwick reach prices almost as high as, say, London to New York.
What was explained to me (probably Air Elbonia, not sure) was that, when competition sets in, this apparent oddity gets corrected. And it sure does. When the world is young going longhaul does not make much sense, since you can charge pretty much the same for shorter routes, of which a plane can serve plenty per day. As competion starts to heat up, fares on short routes drop rapidly. Longhaul not so fast.
By the end of the round, and as far as pricing goes, this simulation gets much closer to real life.

True that, and to throw in a reference to the LF, your LF becomes more realistic -- drops from the 95+ range down to the 60-70% range, too ;-)
I already added a new base and I will build that up domestically, but my other hubs I will build up international routes. I think I may launch some from DCA after all to a few locations...
-
ok, so the prices for flying the long hauls might not be as high as they should be, but as competition comes the prices drop less..... I guess that is a fair trade off. When you pay 155 million for a plane and it only brings in 250k a day that doesnt seem to be smart business though. I have bought a few longer hauling planes because to me that is how my airline would progress in real life too.
For changes in the game in the future, the odd plane accident would be a good random event. Buying that 200 mil jumbo and losing it soon after would be a BIG shock the company. Late planes affecting customer base would be nice too.

talk about no consistency, I have 27 different types of aircraft in the company (laughing) I find something that looks good in the "for sale" market and buy it. The Caravelles are very nice and the Argosy for short routes are incredible, just not enough for sale in the open market (laughing)

ok, maybe someone can explain to me how in such a short round (time) someone can have 30x 737 and 50 Caravelles? Am I missing something like a credit market or something (laughing) I'd like to think im doing pretty decent for starting from scratch this round, but I have like 35 planes total with my 800 mil company value.

Compared to the top players I am pretty bad (currently at rank 37). Perhaps I may help you but I need your airline ID.
-
ONLY 30x 737 and 50x Caravelles? Probably a noob, playing very poorly. :P
(Am I being mean?)
Remember this round we all started with a very good plane and plenty of cash. Those that did not start saving for the first Boeing and did not engage too early in pointless wars started growing very fast and very soon.
-
You make me feel like I am a loser. Have only 39 B732Adv's on order along with three long-haulers
-
You guys are gonna make me cry. I have 21 mil in cash and I'm only worth 72 mil, making 787k a day. :(
I have 4 DC9s on order though...I got a very generous discount. Someone's ordering on my behalf and while I save up the cash.
-
finally worth over a billion (1.2 billion now) with a dop of 5 million. Long hauls are still disappointing with how much they make. Another suggestion I have is the ability to replace a plane and have all the routes the old plane was on picked up by the new plane you replaced it with. It takes a lot to do when you replace a short hauler that has 8 runs a day to various cities. A simple "click and replace" would be great. My best plane (757) only makes 250k a day.

I decided to stay above the fray and offer all-business class service instead on executive jets. 20 seats on a plane designed for 172.....now that's something to write home about. If the round was longer I'd actually start phasing out nonpremium services as I start phasing in executive aircraft, but the round ends in like a week so it's not worth it. Plus even the most overpriced executive jets cost like 19 million.
5.4 million euro DOP, 245 million net worth.
Fleet:
4 DC9-40 (2 more to be purchased soon)
2 DC9-50 to be delivered soon
1 Dash8
2 YS11
1 MD83 executive jet (5 to be delivered today, 4 more tomorrow), 2 leased
1 MD83 on order
2 EMB120s to be purchased soon with 2 more to be delivered soon
1 EMB110 (to be phased out, replaced with EMB120s)
9 leased 10Bs
And a bunch of other leases
I know, I have much fewer planes than others but this is all in a week's work.

This is something I'd like to do.
What would be ideal is if the programming allowed for this sort of plane to charge a higher fare - after all, it is a premium service and as such it should have a premium price.
Perhaps something to look at in addition to the class system when you guys have enough time to focus on other stuff like that.
-
well i have only been playing the game since this round, but even I have learned that lots of frequencies is bad for business to one place. In the Philippines seems some people putting many mulitple routes in.......... Good thing I have a big of money now (worth 1.4bil.) So I can play the low cost airfare game, but the people that do the 8x routes sure take a lot of fun out of the game (laughing)
And I agree that some features would be nice as a Premium service class, redoing the long haul system to make it a little more realistic, random events to make you change up your strategy if required (crashes, on time, passenger happiness).
The game is incredible and I thank the designers for their hard work

But it does! :)
-
It does. I often charge 2500+ on my US to Europe routes, even the competitive ones. On the noncompetitive ones, I can often get 3200-3700 or thereabouts. I think the highest fare I charge is 3626 for one of my European flights (I can't tell you which-my lawyers would kill me). I have 20 in operation right now (including 4 leases and excluding the 3 BBJs I have in operation), and I'm taking delivery of 4 more this evening. I probably have one of the largest business jet fleets of any mixed service airline with my net worth (about 700 million).
I actually picked up an MD83EJ for the range, but I saw that it was a viable approach to completely shift my focus to using these exclusively, I switched. My regional fleet consists of mostly EMB-120s.
I have 15 EJs and 12 on order and 5 leased. Plus 3 BBJs. For an airline worth less than a billion euros, I probably have the biggest operational fleet of EJs and BJs.

got a problem guys. I bought a 767-200er on the 17th of July 85 and now it is 18 aug 85 and the plane still has no available hours and when I try to make a route it doesnt show up as being available. /Any help will be GREATLY appreciated on how to fix this

If the plane is new then that's normal. I think it takes 3 months. If it was bought seconf hand, it's a bug. See in the bugs section and report the plane ID (and your airline ID) so that it gets corrected.
What's the status of the plane? Is it "In Service" (bug) or "On Order" (normal)?
-
The people who run the site fixed it, it was a bug. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP MODERATORS.
