mm is not everything, I have a Sigma APO 135-400 for my KM 5d, and when you use that long lenses it is very hard to keep it still in order to produce sharp pics of aircraft at FL340. A shorter high quality lens, and some good cropping is preferred IMO. Like the 70-200 2.8 L IS lens for Canon, or the the Minolta 80-200 2.8 High Speed APO lens from Minolta. Those cost an arm and a leg but is well worth it.

I only have a very basic 75-300mm III USM which isn't great for contrails. However, I can either use my tripod or rest it against the loft window while taking pics
