Title: Why join an alliance?
Post by: pocketbookbrando on January 02, 2008, 04:34:00 am
I read the wiki on alliances and it says nothing about why you'd want to join one.  What are the concrete benefits?  Also, do you have to put the stupid ??? or [whatever] into your airline name?  Thanks.

Joining an alliance let's you create routes from your alliance member hubs and you will probably get lot's of help from the members (like cheap aircrafts...) and there are normally official brokers supporting the alliance.

No, you dont have to put the [****] thing at the end of ur airline name unless if ur alliance requires it

So if I have an alliance member in europe with a hub at heathrow, I can run flights to various parts of europe out of his/her hub?

Correct. To a point (5, 10, 15 or 20 flights depending on the rules)

Is that a pool of flights or is that per member?  If per member, wouldn't the ideal be to have a very small alliance so that you can use all of those flights in the pool?

Its the maximum between all the members (5, 10, 15, 20), if you're in a mega-alliance with like 20/30 different airlines, you're put in a very unfortunate posistion most of the time due to the fact the members would be putting flights from your hub to routes that you fly (thus making you compete with them). Also, you wouldn't get the chance to use your members hubs too as they would be taken very quickly.

Doesn't happen if you have sane alliance rules.

What are sane alliance rules?  I want to create an alliance and reap maximum benefit from it.  I figure only one person per continent and I'll only allow those with valuable hubs.
