I would guess Pride. But the way a song should be good enough to have that effect on anyone.
Edit: After listening to the Irish National Anthem in English its better in Irish... The Brits don't know we are singing about them. (No actual offence intended)

a) depends on the country the national anthem belongs to b) depends on the occasion c) I feel sorry when people forget the text of their anthem while singing it (if Air Hannover likes soccer he knows what I mean  )

Not too much, especially when they add all these weird samples to it to simulate nature etc, just makes it sound stupid. We sing it in Maori first then English.

The Italian national anthem sounds like one of the best drinking anthems out there. I loved it when they sang it at the Torino Olympics during the medal presentations.

I get a great sense of pride esp being that a good portion of my family and bf served in the military. It reminds me that even though the US isn't perfect the founding principals are kick butt and can't any other country come close to touching them. Now once that monkey and jerk off are out of D.C. hopefully things can return to normal here.

Clinton could be next the way it's going. I think she might have a chance.

I really love the Portuguese anthem... and I feel really proud of it...
But on the other side... it makes me think something like "man... we were so powerfull and our country was great... but now... well... no comments... maybe we need another D. Afonso Henriques or a 2nd 25th of April (carnation revolution)".

I despise my National Anthem. Read the English translation (Wiki)
Arise! All who refuse to be slaves! Let our flesh and blood become our new Great Wall! As the Chinese nation faces its greatest peril, All forcefully expend their last cries. Arise! Arise! Arise! May our million hearts beat as one, Brave the enemy's fire, March on! Brave the enemy's fire, March on! March on! March on! On!
(1) How does one feel patriotic when the National Anthem tells you to all to die? (2) I don't want to be the new Great Wall - enough people died during its construction! (3) National Anthems generally don't come from propaganda during World War II. (4) It shows China's pathetic defenses during the Second World War.
I think it's time we had a change of Anthems....something less violent perhaps???

i always sing this: San Min Chu-i, Our aim shall be: To found, a free land, World peace, be our stand. Lead on, comrades, Vanguards ye are. Hold fast your aim, By sun and star. Be earnest and brave, Your country to save, One heart, one soul, One mind, one goal.
and this: Lo! The glorious landscape with bountiful goods! Daughters and sons of Emperors Yan and Huang count as heroes of East Asia! Do not dismiss yourselves! Do not hold yourselves back! Further glorify our nation and work towards harmony! Creating the nation is difficult, so remember our founders! Maintaining it is not easy either, so do not be short-sighted! With one heart and one spirit, keep pressing to the goal! Clear Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth!
Totally agree with gizgiz, thousands of people died during the construction of the Great Wall.

It would probably lead into conservative flame wars when you introduce a national anthem. In addition, the text of those anthems don't really arouse most people. If you read the translation of the French national anthem you'll find that it's quite bloody as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_national_anthem

The French national anthem has been in place constantly from 1879, so I wouldn't say it's something new...

Well... the fifth line of the Portuguese Anthem chorus: "Contra os canhões marchar, marchar" (Against the cannons march, march!) is an alteration of the original "Contra os bretões marchar, marchar" (Against the Britons march, march!). This was due back on that time the United Kingdom issued an ultimatum demanding Portugal give up its intentions of occupying the land between the African colonies of Angola, on the western coast, and Mozambique, on the eastern coast, thus joining the two territories.
@EXTspotter: Yes the original name of that bridge was "Ponte Salazar" (Salazar bridge), that was the Prime Minister and de facto dictator of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. After that revolution they decided to erase Salazar name from history and renamed the bridge "25th of April bridge".

I actually read a book about Portugal, According to Pereira(im not sure if this is the correct translation) a journalist that works at the lisboa. It talked about the Salazarian dictatorship

I feel proud to be a citizen. Proud to be an American citizen. Proud to go into the USAF when I am older, like many of my family members. I'm just living in China for two years. The communist national anthem makes me sick!
