Title: Anyone else have a 'hurt' airline created for them??
Post by: CornField on September 29, 2007, 02:23:43 pm
Okay, other than D Express and his personal pack of morons. (I'm still pretty impressed how big your gaggle of idiots was)
I seem to have picked up a 'hate' airline. puesdoScandinavian, or some other nonsense pretty close. It popped up on about 50 routes I am on, at a price 1 euro less the my fare.
It really is kind of an honor to get one.
I wish I knew who the real owner was so I could return the favor.
Anyone else get one????

Souhnds like competition, to me. I'm bouncing back and forth with several airlines all fighting the same price wars for our routes. One Euro, five Euros, what's the difference?

I get few of them, from large to small. They always crave for ranking, 100% loading, and they want to show how many gates/ how much money they have...etc The loadfactor of my company have never been over 80% no matter how many times I change the ticket price. Hell in Asia...

Wow. I change focus cities, and I suddenly increase my competing routes against you by 400%
Folks, that means going from 1 competing route to   4 routes!  Yup, that's close to 50.
Don't brag about not bothering to update routes for 3 weeks because of all of the "waste of aluminum" airlines (http://stephenm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=14116#14116) then coming on the forums to complain about newbies like me that appear while you were "away", oh Mighty #196.

growth in competetive games inherently increases competition. this implicitly results in people who have been in the game before others ending up being annoyed with the game because "its not like the good old days". thats normal process in every computergame and even thing called life. i like competition.

I like caps.
But you got a point, competition is normal and without it, the game would be boring. Even playing Tetris for 50 hours straight would be more entertaining.

The otherday I noticed an airline that has 3 bases the same as mine. But it's competition, plus I doubt they will equal me in the rankings.

Well, such things happen. I entered Fresh! territory when I started a base at RHO, and Aero Scanias when I first began at MMX. And off course you try to get as many flights up on that airport, and that usually means to destinations close and those destinations are always occupied by the other airline. Should I leave them alone then? Where am I supposed to go? to 1500 pax airports 2000 miles away? I think both Fresh! and Aero Scania and I have a healthy symbiotic relationship in those areas. I even fly some negative rev routes with 2% load just to have that route in my map, and I believe that the others have that too. I thing I have 10 euro fares at 3 or 4 airports out of 190 and that where there are already 7-8 airlines doing that route and that are in a price war. Heck, if all would settle for 50% we would all make more money than flying 100% at 10 euro. But that's the rule of competition, as annoying it is to get a "hate airline" :D

I had pseudoScandinavian show up at one of my bases. The odd thing is that it was my least profitable base before he showed up, but I added so many flights to to compete with him that it ended up being my most profitable base!

Two things:
A. Please someone show me where I complained??? Actually, I think its pretty funny someone would put forth the effort to create a second airline for this....
B. I need to apologize to psuedoswede, I had two airlines names on a notepad. I typed the wrong one down...... My bad.

I agree. i loved the good old days when you'd only have like 2 or 3 competing airlines at the same base as yours. Also, they typically didnt sell $1 fares either. Now, you have $1 fares, and like 15 airlines sharing bases.
Yes, I LOVE competition, don't get me wrong there. But I feel that it has just gotten out of control to a point where it makes the game less fun (for me at least). With so many airlines, I personally have found the game less fun than it was before when we capped the registration number. I stopped playing the game about 1 month ago and am anxious for the reset because I have gotten sick of doing "damage control" on a bi-daily basis, rather than focusing on expansion, which is the fun part and not having to worry too much about fixing my airline.
Could we just cap the registration like we did before? It'd be cool if we could limit the number of airlines, or open up multiple worlds with limited airlines (which I think is being discussed).

I have talked to Stephen about closing registration for several times, but he doesn't see a need in doing so.
Multi-worlds is high up on Will's list, and he has started some backend changes regarding it.

I keep loggin in to 0% load factors, etc... and I'm considering just changing all my problem routes to $1 until the end of this round  A certain airline has shown up on a lot of routes I had solo, and a few others where most of us were sharing quite well, and always tries to take all the passengers.

This complaint would have merit if I didn't find 1 uncontested route a day with revenues in the $75,000 to $100,000 DOP range.
I also know several cities in Europe with 1.5 million to 2.5 million passengers each with either no flights or only one .5 flight to New York (JFK) and other east coast american cities.
You guys could be buying big jets and laying them on these routes all day long, but you haven't bothered to. Instead you build up large idle fleets and huge bank accounts and complain about 1 euro routes between London and Paris.
It's awful hard to take the complaints about competition from us noobs seriously when the more senior players haven't even fully exploited what they already have.

Do consider the number of routes a large airline typically has, and the fact that to survive as a big airline, you cannot create routes to smaller, unserviced destinations only. You have to go to the busy ones as well if you ever want to stand a chance of surviving. In that respect, it can be so much easier to be a small airline with some low-level routes that have no competition at all. You don't have to grow. Besides, you try to make a €100.000 profit flying a widebody from a large airport to a small airport. It doesn't work. I tried Groningen - New York LaGuardia with a 747-400ER and I couldn't possibly break even.

I beg to differ since i started from Carlisle with my airline and for a short time i stayed of the scope, the same happened when i moved on and started to base at Kent and then Paderborn was next followed shortly by Larnaca, Torino and Vigo. I picked low profile airports and used small aircraft until i was big enough to take on some of the bigger players in the game. I now have a worth of 4 billion and 169 aircraft having only been playing for a maximum of three months i reckon two. I fly globally. I do however think there is a limit to how many members a game such as this can have without having more than one game world. My personal cap would have been at 3000 to 3500.

going off active, we're far from that limit, going off total, we passed it a bit, but not terribly bad.
Multiworlds, will be hairpulling, but good. It will be the top priority of myself and stephen during next age... hopefully we won't break anything too serious in the preperation stages for it. Each world will probably wind up with a seperate cap. Which reminds me. i need to make a thread.

But you do know that the gates at certain locations in Northern America and Asia are very rare? Ever tried to get a gate at JFK (Wootwoot, I got one :D ) or at Montreal?
Can be kinda hard sometimes. And at the moment you'd also have problems aquiring enough longhaul planes. Lease market is emptied of anything bigger than an A321 except for the 772LR, which is kinda ridiculous for a route from WE to the eastcoast.

Obviously, that's true, but what I meant was you cannot remain flying only quiet routes when you want to grow bigger. You have to get inside the busy ones as well.

Nah, this isn't on any of the major routes like that. I generally haven't bothered with those unless I find a good unscheduled route (rare). Just one other airline was on these, and we were sharing them just fine with $1000+ ticket prices, then another comes in and I always find my routes at 0%. It's ok though, I jacked up my route frequency to 5.0 like he has, and set it at $1. If he wants to keep me at a negative profit for the route, then he can join me ;)
I'm considering setting every single one of my competing routes to $1 until the game ends  I probably have enough cash to do it without any issue.

I got a gate at JFK, and I passed on one at Logan.
I passed because I didn't have the cash to buy a 777 or 747 to service a 1000-2500 person route with no one else on it.
Difficult does not equal impossible, and it's a little odd that people are complaining about how a big airline can't grow if they use smaller DOP routes.
I was under the impression that if you have planes sitting idle and the cash to rent gates that adding $100,000 DOP from an uncontested or lightly contested route with a 100k or 50k gate rental fee is getting bigger, not smaller.
Let's see how things go after the reset.

The whining seems to be about their formerly uncontested routes. I started in early SEP and now am nearing the top 100. I have a DOP of between 70-75 million and am adding gates and flights daily. I handled about 300,000 passengers a day (top 15). Yeah, I have scrape and bottom-feed sometimes, but the name of the game is Airline Mogul, not Airline Niceguy. As a late-comer, I'm one of the guys being complained about, you know, the one who enters a market and disrupts their carefully balanced routes.
Too bad. 8)
I play games to win, not to 'get by'.
Ten minutes later:
I just added 1.4 million to my DOP by searching out a couple more gates that have opened up. Yup, at someone else's expense. And so it goes.

I don't mind someone comming in on the routes, it's inevitable. Hopefully the price wars are short and it all balances out.
But when someone comes in on a bunch of your routes with 5+ frequency and extremely low prices putting just about everyone else on that route at 0%, then sure, people won't be happy. I'd edit, bring mine up enough, but then I'd be right back at 0% soon enough.
So, sure, if they wanna play like that, then I'll drop the prices to $1. If they want to put everyone at 0%/negative profit, then they can get a taste of their own medicine. Another airline on one of my previously decently shared routes (~10 airlines) did this just when I was about to. The same problem airline came in and had a 5 freq 777 at extremely low prices, undercutting everyone, so he put his at $1 just as I was about to do mine.
Why get forced into the negative and run out of a route when you can ease up and still make profit. Profit > no profit.

Yes, I have to admit daily battles get old. I will be interested in seeing how a new age starts. I'm a Johnny-come-lately and I may come to appreciate their complaints!

True. I haven't done too may of those, unless it's a route where I'm the first to be there. I like to keep a balance between frequency and price. To me theres a sweet spot I like to hit.

 I can't say I blame you for your frustration. I just thought it was funny how earlier in the thread you complained about it, then turned around and said you were going to do it.
See ya in the new age!!! :D
