Is total profits BEFORE or AFTER the total costs are substracted?

under normal circumstances, revenue (or "turnover", or "takings", or even "sales" for some businesses, whatever you call it) minus costs = profits


for the profit/loss in finance, it is after costs are subtracted

for DOP, it is more like ticketing revenue minus the fuel/operating costs for the flight
