Title: How to climb the hill
Post by: TheKevinShow on August 10, 2013, 04:33:55 am
I have a problem.

Whenever I play AM, I'm always quite successful. My airlines are regularly top 15 in airline value in public worlds but I can never seem to be as successful as the big-time players.

There's my airline in the maintenance formula test world. What am I doing wrong?

As far as I can see, you will have to spam routes to any airport within 500 miles (later 1000 miles) with a good turboprop. ATR-72, Dash 8-400, BAe ATP and J61 and KFC CV5800 are good in these situations (my personal best would be the KFC CV5800). Don't order jets until your DOC is ridiculously high, more than one jet a day, at least.
Also, when having all the airports exhausted in the nearby area, open a base at a nearby airport and repeat the process.

Examples of this process:

Best strategy ar start is only focus on  turbotrops and when you have doc around 5 m, open sesond hub near you firts hub. Like if you are in ORD open hub in DTW and use same gates as from ORD.

Possibly the best way, as Matias said, but probably the most boring IMO. Just don't feel like a natural airline.

What I have done in my airline (JumboJet Expansion) is to open the base in FLL and then my second one (after about a year and a half) in CLT. Practically use the same gates and same airports that your first hub has. Than grow into new markets once you copy your first set of routes.

I am having the same issue as well.
Airline Mogul - See my airline (http://www.airlinemogul.com/airlinemogul/show_airline.php?id=59581&wid=2769)

I am however, focusing mainly on the 737-300 as I have a DOC of around 7 million. Any suggestions?

If you want to be number one, don't fly aircraft as big as the 767. Don't fly the long routes yet. Use gate search and fly to the closest airports with aircraft sized 150-220 pax, depending on airport size. No matter how small the airport (especially from Atlanta), make a route to it, every and any airport closer then 2000 nm. Repeat with a new base like Chicago, Houston or similar.

What I have been doing is purchasing 737-300s and using premium gate search to search for all gates within 500NM of me in distance ascending order and creating routes to them. The 767-200ER is actually being sold with a 10% markup, not being flown. Would the gate search and spam routes strategy be the best one?

In order to get the highest placement, then yes. It's the best strategy

Always hated this unrealistic aspect of Airline Mogul. I wish operations were more affordable for airlines that chose secondary airport operations (Cape Air, Allegiant Air type operations). Obviously way too difficult to engineer into the current game engine. Nonetheless love AM.

I can tell you some changes are in the pipeline making short routes less profitable and changing the balance of slow aircraft versus fast aircraft on those short routes

That's ok... got all the time in the world.
Still good to know there are projects gently being worked on.
