Apologies if this has already been answered, could not find it anywhere.
I understand that the maintenance cost of my airline only depends on two variables: average aircraft age and total aircraft value.
Can anybody tell me what function of these two variables gives the maintenance cost?

The algorithm is a safely guarded secret. ;)
But then, it is relatively safe to say the followings...
- avg aircraft age increases => maintenance cost increases
- total aircraft value increases => maintenance cost increases

Dredging this one up from the annals of history...
Do you think keeping that a "closely guarded secret" are fair though? No real world CEO/CFO/COO would invest in new equipment without knowing what it's costs are going to be.
From a game developer standpoint I understand keeping it a secret, but there should be a middle ground where we know what our costs are going to be.

You should know that the formula uses your average fleet age and the aircraft values as to calculate the maintenance. That means it will increase iv you have old aircraft, but also if you have a new fleet and buy a bunch of big jumbo jets. The rule of thumb is to keep your fleet age below five years if its mostly turboprops, but below three years if its mostly jets. Of course, if you have bases out of the big airports you can add a year or two to those averages.
