Current world date: November 1981

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Northern Airlines started operations February 23rd 1964. The airport of choice was obvious to the founder of the company; he had been raised in the city of Uppsala a short trip from the capital, Stockholm. Between the cities, an airport could be found; Stockholm-Arlanda, more commonly known as just Arlanda.

The founder had a Douglas DC-3 at his disposal and hired a small group of people to fly the aircraft to a choice of domestic destinations. It soon, however, occurred to the founder that he could fly to close international cities, such as Copenhagen and Oslo. The next day the aircraft, which now had acquired the name Stockholm, touched international ground for the first time in Copenhagen.

New hubs and name change

As the years flew by, Northern Airlines grew very fast and soon placed itself as one of the top 20 airlines in the world. By this time, the company had opened a hub in Copenhagen. One year passed, and our second foreign hub opened in December 1967 in Oslo. During four years we also served major cities in Europe from Stockholm-Bromma.

In September 1970 Northern Airlines went through some changes. The name was dropped and the company from this day on should be called Blue Airways and a hub was opened at the Washington-Dulles Airport.

This change lasted for exactly 10 years. Blue Airways suffered from huge administration problems and soon enough, after dropping not only the name, but also 60% of the value, the company would now change back to its former name and start over again, from scratch.

A new beginning

We quickly re-established our base at Arlanda and eventually got a running base at Washington again. However, we have no intention of starting to fly from neither Oslo nor Copenhagen.

Value status

We’re currently ranked as the 24th (of 65) most valuable airline in the world with a value of roughly €4bil. We carry 36 000 passengers each day which means we’re the 30th largest airline in terms of passengers.

We have a fleet of 40 aircraft (including orders; 34 excluding).

Our fleet: Brackets indicate orders.

Base status

We have the largest market share at both of our bases, 26.5% at Stockholm Arlanda and 19.1% at Washington-Dulles.

We currently serve 83 destinations from Arlanda and 54 from Washington with a total of 137 routes to 125 destinations spanning over five continents.

Alliance Status

We joined the alliance Sky Blue in 1968. Sky Blue is the oldest alliance formed in 1948 by the most valuable airline in the world, Pacific Aero previously known as Orbital Airlines.

Sky Blue is currently the largest alliance by a small margin; the second largest being Skyworld International

Northern Regional founded

March 1982 Northern Airlines' first subsidiary was founded and flies under the name Northern Regional. Currently, Northern Regional serves 57 minor airports around the Baltic Sea region. Many local politicians have shown interest in an expansion of Northern Regional in order to expand the business around the counties. Northern Regional CEO has stated that they will expand enough to suit the demand around the region. At the moment, Northern Regional operates 6 aircraft; 5 Fokker F28 Fellowship 1000 and 1 Dash 7-100 with an additional Dash on order.

Northern Airlines passes milestones

Earlier this year, Northern Airlines, along with its subsidiaries started its 200th operation. And with such a high rate of expand, we're now approaching 300 routes in total next month. Northern Airlines' CEO expressed both relief and happiness when the 200th route commenced, stating that he's happy that the airline has come this far but also relived that the airline hasn't stumbled across any hard competition at either Arlanda nor Washington Dulles which has made the trip from the "new beginning" to here a lot easier. He also said that the aircraft used have really shown result and delivered as you would expect.

So far, Northern Airlines has favored non-Soviet airliners and the airline is now in talks with Boeing about their upcoming twinjet; the Boeing 757, planned to start selling at the beginning of 1983.

Another milestone achieved is the re-entry on the top 20 list of the most valuable airlines. In one year, the airline has increased its value by roughly €1.4 bil. The airline is now worth €5.4 bil and is at the moment the 18th most valuable airline.

Value status

As stated above, we're the 18th most valuable airline with a value of roughly €5.4 bil. We carry 65 200 passengers daily which means we're the 20th largest airline in terms of passengers.

We have a fleet of 74 aircraft (including orders; 70 excluding).

Our fleet: Brackets indicate orders.

Base status

We still have the largest market share at both of our bases, 33.1% at Arlanda and 27.7% at Washington Dulles.

We currently serve 191 destinations from Arlanda and 101 from Washington with a total of 292 routes to 275 destinations spanning over five continents.

Northern places order for 757

Early January 1983, just after Boeing announced they will accept orders for their new twinjet, the Boeing 757-200, Northern Airlines placed an order for four aircraft with option for 5 more. Though, Northern Airlines isn't the only airline that's placed orders, two other airlines have shown interest for the aircraft.

After the signing, Northern went ahead and unveiled two new paint schemes. Both have been designed to work on either aircraft in Northern Airlines' fleet. Here are the new schemes:

Thanks! I'll have to admit that you've inspired me a lot and the fact that you don't make liveries anymore just got me wanting to create them myself.  :D

Heh, I just got enough of making liveries, and I felt that my creativity was slowly disappering; but it makes me happy to know I was your inspiration :)

Just try to make the shadow a little lower on the 737, otherwise it's perfectly good :D

Northern Airlines 20 years

Last February, Northern Airlines celebrated 20 years in service. In 1964, the aircraft called Stockholm took off from Arlanda, making Northern Airlines the first airline based at Stockholm-Arlanda. In order to mark this date, Northern Airlines ordered 15 Boeing 767-200ER which will replace our aging L-1011-500 on long haul flights from Arlanda. We've also started long haul from Washington and a few 767s will take part in the long haul fleet from Washington.

We've got a few new liveries due to the anniversary that will be presented below. You can also read some airline history in the first post.

100th Aircraft and new liveries

One of the 767s ordered will become our 100th aircraft. Northern Airlines is now one of 14 airlines with a total fleet of more than 100 aircraft. Because of these milestones we've decided to unveil some new liveries.

The 100th livery will only be painted on one aircraft. The same rule is applied to the 20 year livery. Other 767s will be painted in other, existing liveries. 757s Ordered from this point and on will be painted in the shown livery.

We’re currently ranked as the 18th (of 63) most valuable airline in the world with a value of roughly €9bil. We carry roughly 89 000  passengers each day which means we’re the 17th largest airline in terms of passengers.

We have a fleet of 114 aircraft (including orders; 99 excluding).

Northern Airlines reaches 100 000 daily passengers

A few months ago Northern Airlines reached another milestone; 100 000 daily passengers. This means that the Sweden-based airline carries a bit more than 36 million passengers a year. This has been made possible through hard work from everyone involved in the airline and of course, our fleet of 119 aircraft.

In other news, the airline started a fleet renewal program after reaching the milestone above, and Northern has now spent over €3.2 bil in new aircraft, most of them being B737-200 Adv. HGW. This means that we have an all new international (not intercontinental though) fleet consisting of mainly B737s at both of our hubs. This does not apply to our subsidiary airline Northern Regional, though the aircraft used by them is being replaced the following month.

Value status

We’re currently ranked as the 17th (of 62) most valuable airline in the world with a value of roughly €10.5bil. We carry roughly 104 000  passengers each day which means we’re the 15th largest airline in terms of passengers.

We have a fleet of 129 aircraft (including subsidiaries and orders; 119 excluding orders).

Our fleet: Brackets indicate orders.

Base status

We still have the largest market share at both of our bases, 37.07% at Arlanda and 34.18% at Washington Dulles.

We currently serve 234 destinations from Arlanda and 200 from Washington with a total of 442 routes to 369 destinations spanning over five continents.

Northern Airlines in Seoul

Late December 1986 Northern received 10 brand new Boeing 767-200ER to replace the aging 757s in Northern's fleet spread over the world. And as it happens, Northern put one new 767 at Arlanda, five at Dulles and shipped the rest to Seoul, South Korea.

Plane spotters could the other day count to more than five 767s at Incheon; Northern had then cut long haul operations at Washington and Stockholm and shipped the airliners to Seoul. Yesterday operations began, 31 long haul destinations and 6 destinations within Asia is now being served by Northern from Incheon International Airport in Seoul. A consequence being that Northern has expanded its route network to also serve Australia.

Northern Airlines also confirmes that they're awaiting delivery of ten 737-200 Adv. HGW to serve short- to mid haul destinations from Seoul.

Now having opened opportunities for a gateway in Asia, Northern haven't expanded passenger-wise, however, they've reallocated its resources to form a better chance of doing that in the near future.

Recent happenings within Northern

During the last two years Northern has gone through a fleet-renewal program and last year the airline focused on long haul aircraft replacements. This resulted in 53 new Boeing 767-200ERs worth more than €7bil. combined. The 767s will fly across the globe through our three hubs at Stockholm, Washington and Seoul.

Northern Airlines places order for Airbus airliner

Throughout our history Northern has always been interested in Boeing's development and their aircraft; starting with the 707 and 727, Northern has flown at least 1 member from each series developed so far by Boeing. Now though, Northern has chosen to let Airbus into their fleet.

Last summer Mediterranean Airlines placed an order for 10 new airliners, namely the Airbus A320-200, an advanced member of the A320-family making Mediterranean the launch customer for the new airliner.

Northern has now placed a firm order for 10 A320-200 with option for 15 more. This makes Northern the fifth airline showing interest for the new airliner. The A320s will operate out of Washington and Stockholm.

Northern Regional rebrands

Northern Airlines today announced that the airline has made an overhaul of the entire airline and its subsidiaries. As a result of the overhaul Northern Airlines has announced the rebranding of its regional subsidiary airline Northern Regional, which now will be branded as Northern Commuter.

Northern Commuter has recently reached leasing agreements with North Eastern Airways and Britain Express leading to Northern Commuter leasing a total of seven aircraft; two Beech 1900C, one Embraer EMB-120RT from North Eastern Airways and four Shorts 330-200 from Britain Express. The leased aircraft will assist the other ten Fokker F28 Fellowship operated by Northern Commuter throughout Northern’s hubs.

Northern Airlines’ financial position

Northern Airlines has, during the last decade, grown financially by roughly €17 bil and due to a recent boost in the economy we’ve climbed the value-ladder 12th to 7th place within 2 years.

Our average aircraft fleet age is 2.6 years and we’re in the process of adding on another ten Airbus A320-200 to our fleet of 137 planes (excl. orders). We’re also in negotiation with Boeing about additions to our current long haul fleet of 53 B767-200ER. We’re temporarily serving Australia with two Lockheed L1011-1 leased from Scandinavian, the two airliners are based in Sydney serving three destinations each. The leasing contract is due to expire November next year.

Current world date: November 1994

In December 1988 the board of directors of Northern Airlines made a controversial decision. They found that during several cases, customers were complaining about the appearance of the airline and that being a customer of Northern wasn’t as prestigious as it used to be. That made the board take a look to find what upset the complaining customers and they found nothing else that the airline had grown. They went deeper, and did random quality-tests on the airline’s many routes. They all agreed that it wasn’t like before, it was a bit worse than it once used to be.

By that point the board faced two possible solutions for the future; either expand more and become the average airline or cutback on routes and concentrate the quality. They chose the second…

So the cutbacks began. The board agreed that Stockholm-Arlanda would be the sole base of Northern Airlines as the airline is Swedish and Arlanda was the place it all began. Seoul and Washington would consequently no longer serve as hubs for Northern. Gradually the route network would dilute until only 102 destinations remained, served from Arlanda. Two routes would serve as extensions from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Australia.

The fleet was renewed and the airline saw the 757-200 come in handy once again. New liveries were applied aswell as new economy, business and first class products.

This story will serve as a cover-up for me not having the time needed to maintain the airline as it used to be.

New Liveries

Here are the new liveries presented for the Boeing 767-200ER aswell as the 757-200. Huge thanks to mark4051997 over at Mark's Branding Center (http://stephenm.org/smfforum/index.php?topic=12723.0).

This is the first post in a series of post regarding Northern Airlines in PW #1474. The airline has simply been maintained since the last post. As nothing major has happened and the world is soon coming to an end I’ll just sum up the history.

During the 80’s, Northern Airlines built a strong network at Seoul and established a fully functional hub at Incheon. The airline grew bigger and bigger on the long haul market using medium haul flights as feeder both passenger and economy-wise. During its peak Northern was operating almost 600 routes throughout 450 destinations using a mixed fleet of Airbuses (A320-200) and Boeings (737-200 Adv. HGW, 767-200ER) with its subsidiary Northern Connection operating Fokker F28 Fellowship as well as nearly 15 aircraft leased in to the airline group.

Not only the airline had its peak now; Stockholm-Arlanda also had its glory days during this time. It was the 11th busiest airport in the world, even busier than great cities airport(s) such as JFK and Chicago O’Hare with a total of 748 flights a day.

In 1988 the airline made the devastating decision to close all its routes from Seoul and later Washington after more than 20 years of faithful flights from Dulles. The last aircraft to leave Dulles was a B767-200ER heading toward Zürich, to be flown to Stockholm later. Northern Connection also ceased operations August 1994 and selling off the Fokker F28s.

From there, the airline resumed to strafe toward its vision, which had been long forgotten during the expansion into Asia and Seoul. The vision was to fly the youngest and safest fleet possible but also to deliver the best service possible and first class treatment all the way from booking to baggage retrieval at the last destination – at all times. This had been torn away during the late 80’s/early 90’s but was now to be re-applied to the 105 routes flown from Stockholm.

The airline was under a lot of critique for a few years after the cutbacks, although the name became synonymous with first class quality amongst the passengers, which was needed at Arlanda since Northern had lost a lot of market share after the rapid expansion by mainly Global Air Express but also minor, regional airlines.

By 1998 Northern was looking for long haul replacements for its 767s and approached both Airbus and Boeing. The A330 proved to be very attractive to the airline and so the negotiations began. In the end Northern ended up with the A330-200 equipped with Rolls Royce engines. The order for 24 of these airliners became the biggest in Northern Airlines’ history worth a staggering €3.2 bil, the equal amount to replace all of Northern Airlines’ short/medium haul fleet twice.

By the early 2000's, Global Air Express had cancelled almost all of their long haul services from Arlanda. This meant that Northern almost had monopoly on long haul operations out of Stockholm, which was being used furiously. By the time all of the A330s were delivered, 45 of the 118 destinations served from Arlanda were intercontinental.

Current world date: April 2005

Northern Airlines continued its intercontinental expansion halfway through 2003 when the airline took delivery of the brand new Airbus A340-500 as the launch customer. With the exceptional range-capacity of the A340-500 Northern opened the longest non-stop route yet: Stockholm-Sydney along with Stockholm-Melbourne. Up to this date Northern had served Stockholm-Sydney with a stop in Bangkok (the same to Stockholm-Melbourne) and the airline decided to keep these routes as an addition to the non-stop routes from Stockholm.
