Title: Replacement Plan
Post by: Mastafa on May 30, 2011, 10:24:50 pm
Hey there, fellow AM players!
I am gonna start replacing my airplanes, so I was just asking if this plan will work:
Short-haul props/jets; 5~6 years
Medium haul: 3~4 years
Long-haul (not started yet): 2~3 years.
Is this plan gonna work? And can you give me some suggestions for planes I should use for replacing the planes?

I am in that world also, and I am NOT replacing anything until 1996 when the A319 and A321 comes out and more ATR's are available then. And Embrare's start to come out then.
But after than your plan will work.

1996? That's like 4 years from now, making the A320's age 6 years. They will be sure to eat your profits. Besides, I can go through 2 replacements by that time :P

A lot of players say different things when it comes to replacement age. I would advise you to find out by doing it :) I used to draw a line at 5 years for short haul aircraft because I read some things about it here. Since I kinda hate replacing A/C (just hate to recreate all those routes *sigh*), I waited as long as possible until I saw my MXF go up pretty fast. That was my sign to start replacing some of my A/C. Guess how old my fleet was.. :P At that time I had 36 737-700's between 9 and 10 years old, 72 CRJ-701's between 5-6 years old and 12 CRJ701's that were 2 years old. It was relatively small fleet, yes. But that shouldn't matter. So all I can say; find out by yourself. Just be sure you keep monitoring your finance page. Make a print screen twice a week or so.
About suggestions for your fleet; I roughly use the following strategy. to <1mln airports = ATR turboprops to 1 < 5 mln airports = A319/737 to 5 < 20 mln airports = A320/739 to >20mln airports = 757/A321 If there's very little competition I'd use A319's/737's to every 1mln+ airport. Saves a ton of MXF later on :)

Are you sure about the 757s?

Well, thing is, if there's any competition, they will fly those high value routes the first. If one of them is in an alliance, it's very well possible that his fellow alliance members are going to trash those routes too. So the extra seat capacity of the 752/753 is very useful. But it really depends on the amount of competition ;) If there isn't any, then use smaller A/C.

Usually, there are only up to 2 competitors.
