This is my development forum for Iarnród Mogal. Any suggestions etc can go in here.

how about a link up to AM. E.G train journeys to and from LHR to places all around UK. This also will increase passanger numbers on flights.

It would be hugely complicated. I was talking about this type idea with another developer, so we will have to see.
-
is there any more preveiws of this mogul yet?

Nope, its in planning.
-
Hmm...where is link to Iarnród Mogal?
-
It's quite.... quite defunct at present. so the link is hiding in shame.
Stephen tinkers with the game in his spare time, but isn't very far along at all. it's nowhere near playable at present, so unfortunately though it's kind of a pretty website, and is green instead of the pinkness (why on earth stephen, does "red" epitomize air travel and "green" rail travel?), it's not available to the public as there'd be nothing for them to do.

Should we swap? You should see my forum theme that Daniel put together...
Yes Ianród Mogal is in development, Air Elb saw a pretty raw version of it, it was just an example of how it would look functionality and some of the admin stuff I will move to AM aswell. Long term project here. ;)
-
is this still ongoing

No movents I'm afraid. At this stage I will be getting AM sorted for the new reset and a load of stuff planned but need to get done for then.

LOL! Exclude the U.S. I rode Amtrak once. Never again.
My experience with French trains in '83 and Germany now have left me with a more favorable impression.
Good luck on the project!
-
Any progress? It seems so fun!
-
I play Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon
I dont know i love laying down the tracks and bulding bridges, if it was web based it cant be done.
-
lol i bet Stephen didnt even start the second page of this
-
Stephen isnt like Windows! He won't bring out another game unless the current one is complete
And of course, He is back to the dreaded college.
-
There is a website started, a few pages up and running along with a basic game structure but its too big a project to work on alongside AM. I find it hard enough to work on 1 never mind 2. :)

That's sad to hear.. but oh well we still have AM
-
Is there really any web based train games?
beacause do you have a competition
-
I think the idea is great, there is certainly that no one in the web has tried it before. I am looking forward to it however long term the project might be.
-
can´t you just clone the aircraft code to make it work as trains?... to add it into AM, not to develop a new game
-

Aircraft dont follow fixed routes as such, trains do. Very distinct difference that changes the entire concept of the game. :(
-
so when do you think railroad mogul will be ready? :D

I don´t get it, what´s the difference between a virtual lisbon-madrid route and a skyline route?, isn´t it a simple "a to b" route thing?
don´t mind answering, I would be wasting your time with tons of questions
-
hi newbie here... i can't w8 for another addicting game lolz
-
If you want to wait for this one... it'll take about 12-18 months
-
But there's always Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon!
-
It would be nice to know if theirs an update on thed game.
-
As stated before, he wants to sort out AM first
-
Well, this will be probably done by the time I finish college
-

Don't get your hope high. Stephen is probably booked with AM until he graduates from college, and unless he is dorky enough to start grad school right afterwards, he would not have much time to develop a new game while he tries to hold down a new job.

That'll be 9 to 10 yrs from now for me

Oi, I want my masters by the time I'm 22.
-
Why do a new game.. when you can improve the "price system" so it doesn't base on the aircrafts we use?
-
Oi, I want my masters by the time I'm 22.
 Didn't know you were into being a sub... :P
(okok... i will keep it clean and children freindly :P )

I say that we make situations to be in, like cattle won't move as your building the track, or one of your engines runs out of fuel (or coal).
EDIT: I noticed we were getting off topic.
-
What time era to start off in is the first question, and what features to include. 1830 start date? Is track built already using networks from a different date or do you build the track? Are stations custom built or whats there in real world etc?
-
build the track, using Google Maps. Make it kind of like CyberNations; you choose the station location, then build track. people are focused in different areas -- so where you build your station does have an effect on the pax there, and when other companies build stations nearby, they basically steal some pax from you.
-
Use Google Earth as a map! Cool, but we should be able to see other peoples company routes/whatever.
-
In the same way that the Trukz game uses the roads on google earth.
-
Why not use something open-source. That way we won't get sued :). More seriously, what trains should we use? Steam engines up to Diesel? I would prefer Diesel
-
Slightly problem with building tracks in GMaps. Unless Stephen hand-enters every coastline into some random database (which is sure to take quite a bit of time), GMaps doesn't know what's water and what's land/mountain. Then a track from London to Paris would cost as much as one say, from Paris to Bordeaux...
Otherwise, GMaps is a great tool to use to plot stations, and possibly SHOW existing track...
@Stephen: Yea, 1830 sounds good :D 'cept Hong Kong was a fishing village back then...so no KCR

Another situation could be an option for narrow gauge and standard gauge, with corresponding price differences. Narrow gauge was cheaper to build, especially in mountainous areas. Plus due to weight and size restrictions, NG rolling stock was cheaper to build also. NG posed some challenges, as rolling stock couldn't be easily utilized on standard gauge rails (not counting converting European to Russian gauge). Lines had to switch to standard gauge eventually (as the DRGW) or go under (such as the RGS).
Early on, gamers could build with NG to save on costs, but may have to update track and rolling stock later on.
-
youve got 3 types of engine: steam, diesel, and electric.
it would be cool if you could include mass transit too...if not, maybe your next project? (Mass Transit Mogul :D)

being a person who work for a narrow gauge railway you would think its cheap but it really not :D
-
Actually there is 3 types of gauges in wide use.
Standard: 1400
Meter:1000
Narrow: 700
All of the Thai railway network is meter gauge. Apart from Bangkoks subway and skytrain.

Japan uses 3'6" (except for the Shinkansen)
My thoughts were as a historical and economic guide. Early builders may not want to spend the extra money grading and opt for a narrow gauge. Others may want to select Standard Gauge for the increased capacity. Narrow Gauge - grow fast, Standard Gauge - higher loadings.
-
Ireland uses broad gauge (5' 3'') for the entire network appart from the tram system in Dublin which is standard gauge.
-

That is meter gauge same as Thailand, many countries in SEA still use meter gauge. And China and Vietnam still have a number of 700mm lines running.

That is meter gauge

Duh :slapsforehead: Forgive me as I'm metrically-challenged
-
-pitches an idea at stephen, which may or may not speed up the dev of this game, and may or may not bring in a new guy to help with it.-
-may or may not mention it ever again, as well-.
-
One thing I think would be cool, which I kind of miss from AM is timetabling. I love seeing how things fit together, and yes AM is fun with the routes and everything but I would hope that a train sim would definitely have a timetabling element, particularly when there is a limited amount of platforms. Also, another thing is where you put the trains to sleep - the platforms should not have an unlimited capacity - if a train is on it, then you have to move it or send it somewhere. That kind of idea.
\Just my thoughts :)
-
The plan for IM was to have full scheduling, allowing ad-hoc stuff along with other items that would make the game a challenge. Its just a matter of getting a chance to sit down and plan it out.
-
Jps says IM slows down progress on multiworlds
-
IM is only pulling idle banter out of myself or stephen at the moment. no coding. practically no time lost. real life is slowing down multiworlds.
-
Hee hee, I'm thinking 6 months before I can actually look at it.
-
your undergrad is in computer programming?

Nope, BSc Logistics & Suppy Chain Management!

so, hows progress? :D

Then you've never been on a US based legacy carrier. They're worse.
-
Well, this will be probably done by the time I finish college
This will probably be done by the time I finish law school...in 6 years.
**goes off, waits for the LSAT suck out soul, stares at the 16 case briefs he has to do and the copy of the APA he has to read for administrative law class tomorrow**
**then stares at the number that decides whether he gets to go to Harvard Law or Podunk U. Law School**
-
What is "Iarnród Mogal" I'm Australian and don't read that stuff...
-
its a train mogul game Stephen is working on or was, im not sure if he still is cause of multi world.
-
I believe Stephen has named is newest development, IM, after the Irish rail company, Iarnród Eireann. More info here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iarnr%C3%B3d_%C3%89ireann)
-
I still want to be an admin this game. Belive it or not, i love trains as much as i love planes. :D
-
As there is a Railway Mogul already in existence (A 3d Train Driving game) I wanted to prevent a conflict and so the name is in Irish.
-
Hmm, any idea if it will be as big as AM or will it be smaller? At that, it will possibly be bigger?
-
I think AirlineMogul will be bigger. At least in my opinion
-
I mean as in the amount of data, not players.
-
Of course AM will. Who the hell likes rails?
-
Huh... People suffering from Anemia?
-
Jesus Jordan, just a question.
-
It depends on the concept, wether its a generic style game with random maps, or realistic style. Will has created a concept for generic, while I created a concept for realistic.
-
I like trains just as much as I like planes.
But neither as much as I like Formula 1
Any news on a possible release date?
-
Any betas/alphas coming soon? Will this be released by the time I'm done my leaving cert? I'm just finishing 2nd year in secondary now...
-

I think you have the right idea.
I'm kind of serious with this question though... What's the progress so far? Screenshots?
-
Nothing at all has been done. Just the concept.
-
Ok, currently having a train route alone would be rather bad for certain area's.
Take Australia as an example. There's great travel across the country, but yet, we cannot link to any other countries.\
That doesn't help.
Therefore, I propose bringing in Ships to the equation, as an example.
Or like many others have considered, brining trains into the game.
However, why would we need trains, considering you would be limited to a small region, and not worldwide travel.
-
Or maybe they could make it only Europe and the Americas....
-
Hee Hee Pretty much the same here! I want to go into aerospace engineering when i complete my secondary school! F1 management game some time? Like managing your team through the races and making your tow drivers win loads of races and the developement of the car etc. Could make it better than the other one i play. thats http://batracer.com if anyone wants to have a go at it. Stpehen can make a much better job judging by AM!!!
-
Off topic here but who are you in Batracer?, I've been playing the game for a while under Olivier Demers
-
how about a link up to AM. E.G train journeys to and from LHR to places all around UK. This also will increase passanger numbers on flights.
I agree it will make AM more funner
-
This may sound crazy and if it went ahead it probably wouldn't be up and running for at least 2 years, but you could have Trains, Planes, Ships, Buses/Taxis all working together to make large transport companies.
-

Hey stephen I'm doing my LC in a few months, wheres the beta :P
-
I think we should launch beta soon and then ask for more opinions for it.
-

That would be awsome :D
-
Any news in this interesting project?
-
Any news? I have been waiting for this game since 2008-2009 now!
-
I suppose Stephen would like to progress a bit on Airline Mogul before beginning a new project. There are still a lot of things to fix in AM...

May I suggest a game called Simutrans? Pretty much what you suggest, just with fancy graphics :D
-
I'm not going to derail this topic but I've got to say that Simutrans/OpenTTD may have been the most confusing thing I've ever played. :P
-
You'll learn, just read the (very bad) tutorials! :D
The single most important thing to remember is: Passengers/cargo has a destination. You don't have a route there? Well, they're not going with you. If you want to earn money, connect industries. If you want to transport passengers, begin by using buses. Rail/air/ship is usually too expensive for the first few years ;)

Well, back on topic now. I, for one, shouldn't derail a thread :P

Cities in Motion looks cool, but it's not something I'm really bothered with. Maybe I'l try the demo once. (if there is one ofc) :P
EDIT: Wrong thread :P
-
Since there's some life in this thread, is there any plan for this? Release date, beta test etc.
-
It actually is interesting.. the name, being Northern Irish, caught my attention straight away, but the idea itself is intriguing. Any movement on a Beta?
-
I don't think this is made really, just on the drawing board as for now.
and forever At least that's what the developers said the last time they posted in this thread :P
