310K starting at London heathrow...  curious how you managed 500k+ Europacific...short distance routes at ORD? isnt that hell on gate rental at least in the first month starting out?

strategy question for top performers here...whats been your favourite strategy starting out?...multiple destinations with 0.5 freq and resultant higher gate rentals or optimum usage(balance of high $ route with frequency with fewer destinations)?

good luck all

Not sure how that would help as some players will still be ahead with a certain %. Europacific is 550% ahead of me in value, and he probably would be even if the game was slower. It has more to do with where you start and how you play the game.

Erm, sure... But that doesn't really contribute to the point :)

There's still some areas where the game can be slowed down, simply by adding some extra costs. Higher gate maintenance, higher pilot wages, higher aircraft maintenance, higher ATC charges, that sort of stuff.

IMO the pace is great. We select where we start. I chose MTY over MEX because I like the challenge of growing from a mid-sized market. If I had it to do over again I'd probably wait to open the second base tho. :) If one is starting at LHR, they're virtually guaranteed to be one of the biggest as just about any route out of there is a moneyspinner. At the beginning, there's not enough competition to absorb the traffic so new additions don't kill the routes. Since A/C are so scarce, no one has the capacity to flood any routes. We're JUST getting beyond that stage for the major Euroairports it seems, but most of the rest of the world is still very much early days.

back on topic, 730k DOP and I'm on track to be #2 in Central America (which is like, #550 worldwide! :D)

the Oct. 1970 dop charts for top10 players

Code: [Select]

Position Airline Name Airline Dop
1 Europacific Air [UEA] € 38,608,485
2 daklines [UEA] € 32,333,168
3 DeathStarX € 21,382,794
4 Sheep Air [FT] € 23,425,712
5 Air Silvagni [FTG] € 18,778,829
6 air moo 全月空 [FT] € 15,272,297
7 OrangeAir Luchtvaart Maatschappij € 9,373,102
8 Air Pizza (FT) € 16,487,139
9 Mirage Air € 14,436,053
10 Pumpkyn Air [OT] € 11,177,431

as clearly visible, orange has a low dop since hes a broker and leases mostly, which is part of the monthly income and not dop.

i happily notice that i have overtaken two of the top10 players in dop already, started way late in may since i was on holiday.

"1.8m and the following on order

1 HP Herald-200"

Are you sure about that?  Your revenue in 2 days is only 43.2M.  That excludes any costs such as gates, acquiring new gates, fuel and staff.  The planes you have listed go for $57M.  I don't see how that is mathematically possible unless you somehow used to have a much higher DOP.

That said, why bother with the commuters?  You're a small airline and you could buy 2-3 50 passenger planes for what they cost and you also have the money tied up for 2 days.  Essentially, if you bought a 50 passenger plane every 8 hours instead of 2 of those, the capital is costing you (8+16+24+32+40) days of productivity in the 50 passenger plane.

As for the Nord Broussards, why not take advantage of the leases around on the caribous or spend the money on the more standard 50 passenger planes.  You'll only very soon want to ditch the Broussards later and then you'll have the capital tied up getting planes again.

Yes it is an extremely fine plane. I can't wait to have more of them. I am looking for routes suited for the F28 and I have found 8 planes worth of routes for it. So anyone wanna sell their F-28's to me?I am willing to pay 2-3 mill above marketprice if I can get them immediately!

I made the mistake of leasing a B737-200 2 days ago. Never got it above 200.000 DOP. While my Caravelle does better and so do my Argosy's. So no 737 for me.

LOL and you are telling me this when I have finally figured out my short and Medium Range fleets ..........

Here is what I will be going for this game:

As you can see a mainly Fokker/Sud Aviation fleet (I consider the Fairchilds to be Fokkers) The Shorts are very good on short routes. The Pilatus I keep in for the roleplaying part as I intend to connect every airport in MAINLAND SEA from Bangkok. And many of them from Hanoi as well. But from Hanoi there are a lot of <300 potential routes which you can really only fly with small planes like that. So they are mainly based in Hanoi. I have entered 50 new Indian airports which means some low potential routes might show up from Delhi as well. So there will probably appear a few more in Delhi later in the game.

Anyway the fleet:

Short distance: <800 nm
Low Density: <300 pot             1.1        Pilatus PC-6-C1/H2 Turbo-Porter      599      9   €765,166

                                         Fokker F27-600                 655   44   €5,804,004

Medium distance:800 nm<>2500 nm
Low Density: <300 pot             2.1
Medium Density 300<>1000 pot   2.2         Fairchild Hiller FH-227B                      2678       56     €11,236,347
                                         Fairchild Hiller FH-227              1612   52   €9,095,261
High Density 1000<>2500 pot   2.3           Fokker F28 Fellowship 1000             1242     65   €22,169,970

I see you have already completely figured that out. I have, too, well almost. however i think i'll consider my medium/sort fleet for range up to 1800nm only.
There is another issue: i am not so sure that you ll be able to stick totally to your fleet plans. Let me tell you why:
Once you are able to go long range(even more than 3000nm), you will certainly buy medium/high capacity planes to do the routes. the things is that these planes will always have some time left(around 2/3 hours out of 24). ANd you sure don't wanna lose that, so in my view it can be really rewarding to ispatch these high capacity plane even on quite short routes, just to entirely fill and use the plane potential.
So far i havent started longhaul so i didn't have yet the need to bother with it, but things happen very fast. And it's not useless to have high capacity planes on short routes to face competition.

I have opted for the Convair 580, DC940 and one or two different types for my medium fleet, and I still have not a single idea on which plane I'll choose for long haul, there are so many.

pre-737: ~$360,000
post-737: $846,037 Very Happy

Hahahaha, you have a DOP that low and you saved up for a 737?  Just so you know, that's probably the weakest growth strategy that I've seen in the game.  Assuming that you get 20 days of profit per month, you could have added 5 $7 short range planes before you even ordered the 737.  Assuming that you get $150k (highly conservative) for each one of these planes, you have lost...

(5+4+3+2+1) * 20 * $150k or $45,000,000 in profit to this point.  Also, you'd be at $1,100,000+ DOP right now excluding what you'd have by using that $45M in profit to lease planes and increase your profit.

As a small airline tying up capital instead of leveraging yourself leads you to abysmal growth, not to mention boredom as you have nothing to do for days while you save up.

I don't think I ordered a 737 until I had a DOP of $20M
Title: What's Your DOP?
Post by: Pacific on January 14, 2008, 02:24:46 am
I do have to agree that saving up for a 737 at this stage is a very poor strategy if one is looking for dop growth.  Each to their own though as every player has their own goals and objectives for this game.
Title: What's Your DOP?

its exponential.  i waited forever to get a 737, now i have to wait only half as long, next time 1/4 as long, etc.
Title: What's Your DOP?
Post by: pocketbookbrando on January 14, 2008, 03:54:02 am
Exponential?  Sure.  Perhaps you might want to listen to those who have a higher DOP than the 737 you so covet.  I just explained how you lost $45M you could have had and you are making a much smaller amount with it than you would have otherwise.  Everyone else has the same exponential growth as you are.  The difference is, I just overed 6 of the advanced 737's and will order 6-12 more tomorrow morning.  You will have enough for it in a few days.  Who do you think has the better strategy?

Good luck with it.  By the time you get a decent DOP, all of the routes will be completely saturated.

Instead of focusing on your false exponential growth idea, I'd focus more on the time value of money and opportunity cost of tying capital up in non-revenue generating ventures.

Well the game is so easy that anyone on here can have a positive DOP.  Even people who play strategies that are highly less than optimal can do well.  In this case, as I pointed out very conservatively, your decision cost you $45M and your DOP is 1/2 what it would be otherwise, not including the planes that you could have bought/leased.  I guess there is a reason why some of us wake up in the morning and have to figure out what to do with half a billion of capital and then others waste capital by tying it up in some emotional quest for a brand name plane.

R6V's gave me about 190k a route, and I chose that aircraft because of the amount of people it carried was higher than the lockheed; hence why I had (I think) 20-30 of them and I had them going all around the world from my base in tehran

Only 190K on an aircraft bigger than the Connie? I had like 30 Connies last round and each one had a DOP of around 500K.

On topic: about to touch 10M DOP.

its odd that your "DOP" is over 190m when your INCOME is only 192.5m (which is identical to mine), so that you claim to have under 2.5m costs.
i can tell bull*vegetable* when i see it, especially when i have the same income   (and i know costs are not fixed but they dont differ by the margin required to make your claims work)

Bottom line of finance page, monthly profit (a better indicator then DOP, as this determines airline value)

Profit/Loss:     €-357,335,168     €3,368,453,712

DOP dropped overnight to 172, must be some guys/girls not sleeping in Europe updating routes at 4am...

Negative for the month so far, cost are spiralling compared to last round

reread what i wrote, the game has arrived at the phase where you have to make a choice of, even with highly a efficient gameplay approach, you end up having to spend more than 1h per day on the game to progress due to the sheer quantity of planes and routes involved, hence i dont see myself devote more than a fraction of the time required to the game, which turns into a job at the current phase(which is prohibitive to people who work and still want to maintain a normal day, i.e. the vast minority of am players).

I am the same, that's why I have nowhere near a 100%LF. Having 950 planes and 2500 routes is cumbersome to say the least. I still manage to limit my game time to less then an hour a day.

Maybe, the best way to keep them happy is to pay on time.  We ran in to a snafu though because two of  orders were picked up far sooner than I expected meaning I had about 1.5 billion worth of aircraft arriving over a 6 hour span rather than a 24 hour span as I anticipated.  Between 8:00 and 24:00 I had them all paid for finally.

This round has been my most successful round every since starting playing airline mogul.

I have now got 22 starliners on order with a lot more to come. these orders plus 60 or so 732advBBJ's have given me a huge:
DOP: €21,108,909
Profit/loss: €348,902,655
Airline value: €4,649,393,134

and I'm still fourth in the airline continent rankings

I can wait till next round :P

Airline value: €5,935,426,802

reached the above with 60 starliners with 10 more to come

I need too many of these aircraft   I cant get enough cause their range is good, passenger load is good and their price is brilliant

except for  the fact I cannot reach below san Fransisco with them to the south in america

Thank you, I have not been over 80% since 1972, and I am doing fine :)
I don't even go for 100 when entering a route with competition, 85-90 is enough, and sometimes that makes a level both or more parties can accept, and that does not speed up the 1 euro fare wars.

I think you guys are forgetting one thing. What good is a high DOP when you reach it with tons of small routes, each requiring a gate rental? I have 326K DOP at the moment and I have 7 routes, my 8 gates amount to 850K a month, about 35K a day, which I should subtract.

Now I'm sure that some of you 1000+ K people would have a totally different figure if you add up all of your high priced hub gates.

Anybody want to post their DOP minus gates?

Mine is 291K

Starting off, I believe it's more important to develop big cash quickly. You grow much more rapidly and more efficiently by running lots of 1x routes (even with gate rental costs) than by dumping multi-frequencies on routes.

I recently did a lot of things that cost money...I joined an alliance, bought a new plane, rented a ton of gates, etc.
At least now I can fly from alliance bases! Opening lots of new routes as soon as the second 737-200 Adv comes in...

Seriously, could you stop bothering with posting your stats?  Ever heard the phrase 'comparing apples with oranges'?  You're beta testing the multiworlds game, NOT the one everyone else is playing.  If you really insist on posting your stats for multiworlds, then at least mention that in the post.

Why rant? I'm just posting my stats to show how I'm doing, no need to be aggressive. And also if you read it properly you will see that I stated that im not playing the current game

Actually, if you read properly, it just says you don't really play it, it doesn't say you don't. And it never says you play the multiworld game. And indeed please stop posting multiworld stats in a normal-world topic.

Hey, anytime!  I purchased several additional aircraft myself, 4 DC9-30s, and a Boeing 732 Business jet myself.  My DOP is just under 10 Million, and my airline worth just climbed passed the 1 Billion mark 3 days ago!  I may not get my DOP up as high as yours, but I figure at least 12 Mil or so :-)

The 732 will be used to launch LHR and/or AMS.  I secured gates before they were gone forever...  Altho, if an alliance member launches service from any of their bases to PIT, DCA or TPA, then I will consider dropping my route(s)...

I might just do AMS-DCA, but if you want to keep that route I'll just make it BCN-DCA.

Anyway, after three days of doing nothing but writing essays on viewing strategies, I have a DOP of 31M with too many planes doing nothing, 36 737-300's and 3 767-200's on order and quite a lot of brokerage requests taken.

No no no!  I won't get my 732 Biz jet for a while, which will likely be based out of PIT.  If you want to do AMS-DCA, do feel free!  Besides, DCA will be used for mostly domestic connections, with a few routes to the Caribbean.  You'll certainly have tons of feed at this end!

PM me if/when you launch this service, then either one of us could post it in airline reports!

And Welcome to DCA!! :D  :D  :D

I suppose we could co-exist on some routes, but then there's the threat canibalizing each other   :o  :(

Ok!

At this point, I am considering using L-1011-500s and 742s for international flights.  The L-1011s wil be used on transatlantic/European flights and to South America, while the 742s will be used for Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific.  I will probably acquire about 15-20 L-1011s, and roughly 10-15 742s, as there will only be a few routes I'll fly to Asia, the Middle East and South Pacific.  That's preliminary at this point, but that's what I am going with.

Maybe some 757s will do transatlantic service...

When I was at Auckland, between 270,000 and 280,000.

I started like, yesterday, by the way. Hence the low DOP.

Fleet-whatever leased planes I can pick up for cheap.

Unfortunately since the MLB season is right around the corner which segues right in to NFL season for me this will probably be my last full bore round until next January unless we play a more laid back Multi-worlds round.

The wife is out of town all this week and I'm two months ahead of schedule with work so I have plenty of time on my hands during the final game year...  I think I'm going to go nuts and try to hit 500M DOP before the game is over.  :)

Sort of in cruise control at the moment.  My new hobby is putting down 2-20x frequencies on routes that drop to <25% LF in ORD.  Of course when you have 145 unused planes that's easy to do, but it's how I managed to get my PAX total over one million.  I also just realized I have 65.99% of the combined traffic in ORD and ATL.  That's a stat I never thought I'd hit.
