Title: Researchers Required!
Post by: StephenM on November 24, 2006, 11:31:17 am
Anyone who is willing to provide information about railways in their particular country, could they please contact myself by private message, or replying to this thread.

Initially Ireland will act as a "test" version as I can access the information required to get the game running.

Thanks,
Stephen

Initally the main task required here is getting stations, tracks and milages. Unline airline sims where a plane goes from A to B as you all know trains are restricted by track. What I plan to do is in someways simply the proceedure of "path finding" and allow (regardless of layout) trains to use tracks that join in a station, even if its hard to do so in real life. When I get Airline Mogul running properly I will get back to this one. Please bare in mind that due to the complexity of this type of sim I plan to make it payware but with a free game or time limited demo.

I need economic research done on the demand/social aspect of Railways in Ireland, so if you could work on that then it would be much appreciated but otherwise I'll do it. :)

That goes for all those who offered help, economics is the first area that has to be researched for each area, unlike a generic "game engine" for Airline Mogul extra "game engines" may be useful or better for Iarnród Mogal, especially if its going to be payware.

I can help with all the Metro system in the Philippines (namely Manila) and the Luzon Express that spans down the entire countryside of Luzon to the bicol Region. (the main island).

This also includes the Manila LRT/MRT system etc..

I also have some knowledge of the Regional System on the NSW Coast of Australia, Though, I will leave all that to D1 and all that.

This will be interesting, A lot different then adding Airports i would believe.

A couple of places to look for financials and loadings are Jane's World Railways and Jane's Urban Transport Systems. They are available in the reference section at public libraries (except mine   ) and some University libraries. They aren't something that you can pick up at your local book store - they are a bit pricey.

Things to take into account would be passenger vs freight traffic, income, and expenses. With few exceptions, passenger systems tend to lose money (which is why they're mostly government owned). Even with the breakup of JNR and BR into private ownership, IIRC the government still retains ownership of the right-of-way. Freight traffic is profitable in the US, Canada, Mexico and Australia due to distance and capacity. Passenger rail in the US, with the exception of shorter corridor services, is abysmal financially.

I am quite knowledgeable in the era of 1900's to 60's and 70's. Other areas I would also be willing aswell as I do have knowledge there aswell.

Actually looking at currant and future commitments I would love to take on a full researcher role and work quite hard for IM.

I am also working on a project of my own, which is a virtual airline for FSX and FS2004. It will be under the name of UKIVA (United Kingdom International Virtual Airways) or Fly Europa. Wonder where that came from. I am currantly working on the more logistical side of things timetabling. Painting aircraft, but if all goes according to plan my earliest, (with a lot of slack) would be late 08 early 09. It will be UK based but over time I wish to open up other airlines, Fly France, Air Germany that kind of thing and start an online alliance called the UKIVA alliance. But this is a long way off a logistically having 2 or 3 airlines let alone more is hard to convert all aircraft to the next generation MSFlight Sim.

Boston MA's sorry excuse for a metro (The green line is a tram that goes underground after the Fenway station, the blue, red and orange are 'real' metro, the silver is newest and is part metro and another 'branch' of it is just buses to the airport.)
It's called the T.
The purple lines are the Commuter Rail, it's the RER of boston.

Hi,

First great idea!

regarding Portugal most inf not all information is public and available in english.
Document in here: http://www.refer.pt/Documentos/Network%20Statement%20REFER%202007.pdf

This includes:

Lines, Tracks, main stations, interconexions with Spain, Rates for passagers and cargo, technical gauge caracterstics for cargo, trafic control sys (also ATC),and all the specs with distances and speed and load limits.

Once you have a defined model i'll give you some help on that.

take care.
