Title: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: 1993matias on October 24, 2011, 06:38:36 pm
Hi!
I though we needed some more 'intelligent' threads (hint at counting ;) ), so this is a great excuse for some thinking :D
A simple game: I post a picture of a plane (or a part). You try to guess it. The first to guess right gets to post the next picture. Happy guessing! :D
The windows are also triangular, like on the Caravelle. Maybe it's from the 60's? Or even 70's?
The designer was a close friend with Marcel Dassualt, who played an important role in the Caravelle. They went to the same aviation school, and cooperated on a number of designs, which is why they share many similarities... Mikhail Gurevich (co-founder of MiG) and Henry Coanda were also friends and schoolmates of the designer of this plane.

I got it! Weeee! It's the Potez 840! :D :D :D
Let's have a history class:
Henry Potez attended Supaero (the aviation school in france) in 1911 together with Henry Coanda and Raul Badin. In 1919 he founded Aviations Potez and bought Allesandro Azani in 1923. Potez built small passenger aircraft during the mid-war years, together with some reconnaissance biplanes.
In 1933 the French aviation industry was nationalized and Potez' factories were handed over to SNCASE. After World War II, Henry Potez re-established the company as Société des Avions et Moteurs Henry Potez. Again, it produced small passenger airplanes, but did never get its old reputation back. When the last aircraft failed to sell (Potez 840), he closed the company. Sud-Aviation bought the remains in 1967.
I'll have the next aircraft up soon. You want an easy one, or a hard one?
PS: I'll just leave the proof here :) Link (http://www.airliners.net/photo/0984883/L/)

Haha, it's an Antonov A-40.
At the start of the war the Russians wanted a way of getting tanks onto the battlefield quickly, so they came up with the tank/glider hybrid. However the vision of gracefully gliding a tank into war never quite happened and so the project was cancelled in 1942.

It has a centerwheel (I can see the reflection), so it is a 340?

Nope, it's a MD-11!
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Med Air on October 30, 2011, 07:12:44 pm
Well done Virgin Serbia it is an A380. The wheels on the A380 are slightly closer together than on the A340, also the A380s wheels are further forward in relation to the wing than on the A340. Well spotted Matias, you could see the inner wheel reflection (but what you saw wasn't a centre wheel but an inner/fuselage wheel reflection).

Why is the image named 'Argentinejetfighter'? It is confusing!
Got ya. I had a feeling that people were trying to cheat this way, so I put in a litte distraction ;)
I suppose you win, but the correct term is JL-9 Mountain Eagle or JJ-7B. FTC-2000 was only used for marketing purposes for a short period several years ago.
About the aircraft: The Guizhou JL-9 / JJ-7B / JJ-9 Mountain Eagle/Plateau Eagle emerged as the winner of the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force trainer competition. The aircraft is loosely based on the JJ-7, itself a copy of the MiG-21U Mongol. It retains the same engine, rear fuselage, tail and rear control surfaces of the MiG-21, but features entirely new double-delta wings and a "hard" nose section with a proper radar. It also features a glass cockpit and an Italian SELEX Grifo S7 radar. It can presumably carry BVR missiles. The JL-9 has also begun entering service with the Peoples Liberation Army Navy Air Force, and a modified version featuring an all-new and much taller tail fin, stretched landing gear and a new and much more powerful turbofan will be used onboard the carrier PLAN Shi Lang. The carrierborne JL-9J will also feature divertless air intakes, allowing it to supercruise at mach 1.6. A prototype has even been spotted carrying conformal fuel tanks. Not bad for what essentially started as a MiG-21 back in 1954 8)

Well done :P But try not to jump to conclusions before I respond, the An-10 Ukraina nose section is almost identical save for a few antennas to at least 4 other planes ;)
As for the photo, Il-96? It looks very much like a PS-90 turbofan.

Oh yeah, right... But you know, I think I found the picture

Seriously? How can you do that? Are you magic? (Yes it is an Il-96)
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Virgin Serbia on November 01, 2011, 02:54:53 pm

The PS-90 has a very unique shape, and is only fitted en-mass to the Il-96, Tu-204/214 and Il-76MD-90. It's not an Il-76 for obvious reasons, and the nacelle on the Tu-204/214 family doesn't have a notch right behind the exhaust.

No, the tail just isn't right. It looks like a turboprop judging by the tail, but the wings looks more like a jetliner-wing. I'm in doubt here....

haha at first I thought the 747 would be too obvious, so I immediately started looking into other aircraft's APU exhausts :L well it was a 747, a 747-400.
I'm going to bed now, I'll upload a new picture tomorrow.

Actually, I though of fem (danish for 5) as in G-V. It wasn't a G-V though, but it looked oddly familiar to the G-V, so I looked up the latest Gulfstream...

It's section 41 from a 727. Well done Mathias! Section 41 on the 727 is identical to the Section 41 on the 737 and 707.

Ahh, a ******* **-***! Did you know that the rear toilet in those feature a glass dome for the navigator? Über cool view from that dome 8) 852 were made, and the 37th air army of Long Range Aviation even has a dedicated bomber variant used to train bomber crews.
Nope. The top half is identical (passenger lobe), the cargo area below the passenger cabin is different. The 737 has the smallest cargo area of the 3, the 707 has the largest.
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: 1993matias on November 06, 2011, 10:10:45 am
Are you sure? I don't mean that the whole fuselage is the same, but the cross section?
Only in the passenger cabin ;) the 757 happens to share the same upper lobe with a new nose, but with a larger cargo area in the front, and an even larger cargo area in the rear.

Nope, the aircraft is the Lockheed M-21, the 'parasite' is Lockheed D-21. Later on, the D-21 was carried by modified B52's after losing one of two M-21 in an accident.

Not really. They had some interesting projects, but they were nowhere near well-known or successful. But... 260 airplanes built (of the model I've posted) was not that bad for 1930's airliner ;)

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: A380YURY on December 23, 2011, 03:38:46 am
Well, I think it's the green one, back from WWII. Knowing VS, the white airliner will be too easy) But B767 will be an answer for it, as I think) And... If it's some of Yakovlev airplanes? I just want to be more sertain.

Huh, looks like I've missed Tupolevs at Rossiya... What a fail... And a green one is Yakovlev UT-2. I had a feeling, that I've seen that photo before - and here it is!

Well, i hope matias won't be furious if I'll 'steal' this one from him... That's an experimental modification of MiG-23 - 23PD. Failed pretty much, cause of these additional engines, needed for VTOL. The airplane could fly for roughly 15 minutes and had no retractable gear) After a few flights it was abandoned. And I'll leave this link here (sorry for Russian language. I'm really sorry, but... it still has VS's photo, heheh) http://www.airwar.ru/enc/xplane/mig23pd.html

I've never thought that some country in Africa would ever build a plane.
The South Africans have mastered the technique of building 1st class aircraft long ago. They were set back in 1994 though, but the white population has begun starting private companies instead of state owned companies, so they are catching up again.

Bump. Hard?
Well it was made to take off vertically. Made. In theory it didn't really work out, so they offered it as a conventional alternative to the F-16 or F-18 instead. The nose is from an A-4 Skyhawk, the intakes are from an F-4 Phantom. It is powered by a variant of the P&W F-100 fitted to F-16s and F-15s.

Well, the only connection between this and submarine is pressuarisation. It was very good for 30s hint: it was built in late 30's, mainly for setting an altitude and distance records, but the flight was never made, as the main designer was arrested, and in Europe.... Post by: A380YURY on February 07, 2012, 05:31:40 pm
Heheh, mission complete :) OK, It was BOK-15. A little bit of history In 1937 after series of succesful transpolar flights, in USSR lots of pilots wanted to get some more flight records, and Stalin allowed to make one flight outside USSR in 1939. A new airplane was ordered, which would be able to fly for 20 000 km (~11 000 nm) on altitude around 10 000 meters (~33 000 feet). In may 1938 Chizhevsky agreed to make this plane, but diesel engines were either too heavy or too fuel-consuming. Kerosene-burning engines were even more fuel-consuming. As result, the maximum distance of the flight was around 15 000 km (~8 000 nm), which was just not much enough. In january 1939 Kaganovich said to Stalin that Chizhevsky was not loyal enough, and delayed BOK-15 on purpose, which resulted in Chizhevsky's arrest next month. In october 1939 one finished airplane made it's first and the only test-flight, and all the BOK programme was cancelled due to war and previous fails. VS, should I keep such airplanes coming onto this thread?) And who will post since I can see no rules about not guessed airplanes :D

It could seat up to 10 passengers, perhaps a bit more.
10-passenger single-prop on a modern-day photo? Is it something from 30's?
The plane is from the cold-war era. It was very popular. And yes, the mirror is supposed to be there. It helps the pilot know if the truck is done loading the plane.

So it's in the AM database?
EDIT: Is it the GAF Nomad? EDIT again: Wait, no... Not the Nomad.
No it isn't. The 10 passenger thing is more of a post-apocalyptic thing. BTW, it has a vertical cargo area. It can perform tasks such as firebombing, hijacking of vehicles, close air support, watering of fields, seeding, medical evacuation, crop dusting, transporting passengers, emergency evacuation, aerial surveying etc.

With 4 engines... B 720 ?
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Virgin Serbia on October 21, 2012, 12:30:45 pm
That's not a widebody.
The aircraft you haven't guessed yet is no longer in commercial service. It was known for having built-in airstair for the passengers. Passengers would enter the cargo area of the plane from the airstairs, carrying their own luggage. They would then deposit it, and walk up the stairs onto the passenger deck.

That sealed it: Ilyushin Il-86. I was looking for that yesterday, but couldn't find it. Found it today though.

No, this was mostly luck. I knew I had seen the aircraft somewhere, but I wasn't sure where. It was just random luck that the first page I looked had this aircraft on it even though it wasn't the exact aircraft I thought it was.

They were purchased and put aside/scrapped in 2007 as a cheap source for spare parts. The landing gear, some of the cockpit windows, practically all the cockpit instruments and most seats have been removed/put in flyable planes. Somebody told me that the altimeter alone costs up to 50.000 kr. when new. The engines cost between 200.000 and 300.000 kr when new. Each. A full set of new windows will easily cost you 18.000 kr.
Or you can buy a secondhand plane of this type containing all those functioning parts for just 150.000 kr.
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!

Thanks. I took it myself as I was cruising along in rather steady conditions. I propped the camera up on the edge of the dashboard. It really is a nice photo, as it shows how small Denmark really is. You can actually see all the way to Jutland in this photo, and I was barely 1.4 km up. It was more impressive on the return trip, when I cruised at FL55. I could see coast on the far side of Jutland, all the way to Sweden on the far side of Seeland! Odense to Roskilde took me 35 minutes that day.

It is a twin-seat jet trainer, and the Luftwaffe doesn't operate it. Furthermore, it was designed in the early 70s.

But it explicitly stated in the title as guessing the aircraft, not guess the sports car. :P
Ahh, but rule number 47 explicitly states that you gain an extra point for guessing the sportscar, if one is present. But only 1 point is available for sportscars, even if multiple sportscars are present. Only 1 person can get that 1 point.
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!

The Malindo plane is a 737-9GPER, the Southwest is a 737-8H4.
VS, you are definitely the winner all categories and Matias is n°2. Both of you are unbeatable :'(
The interesting fight is for the third place is between Norge and I. Could you please post pictures to decide between he and I who will be the third. Thanks ;)

I'd guess some military aircraft. A Soviet one? Wait. Is it the registration over there? 82046? Definitely Russian. Now, Googeling would be cheating :P But as far as I know, the only current Russian transporter with a rear ramp is the Ilyushin 76. Am I right? :D

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Virgin Serbia on January 26, 2015, 07:12:44 pm
Only the An-225 does not have a tail ramp. Judging from the size, it is either an An-22, An-124 or Il-76. It's not an Il-76, and those red things are covers for a jet engine, leaving only the An-124. The crane is a dead giveaway, that particular model is only found in the big Antonovs. The An-22 also has no padding/isolation on the walls, and the hold of that one is painted blue on the bottom and yellow on the top.
Now, how do I know that it's the rear ramp, and not the front ramp, which is identical on both the An-124 and An-225, and looks/operates very much like the rear ramp? Well, the An-124 has stairs leading to the upper deck in the rear and front of the main cargo deck. The front stairs are parallel with the fuselage, the rear stairs are perpendicular to the fuselage. Therefore, this photo shows the rear ramp on an An-124.

Piper Cherokee PA-28-140 I think.
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Virgin Serbia on January 31, 2015, 12:11:02 pm
I concur, that looks unmistakeably like an early Warrior, most likely a -140. Speak of a horrible plane, never going to voluntarily fly one of those again.
It could be a -180, -150 and even a -160 though. The square windows and short cargo hold are a characteristic of early Warriors, rather than the -140. So early -180s had square windows too. It could even be an Arrow, although I have yet to see one that doesn't feature the third window in the hold.

Hmm, I am pretty sure it's a 747 engine pylon. And a P&W logo on the engine. Therefore it must be a 747-100/-200/-300/SP that has been modified. Pratt's 747SP engine testbed?

Those engines are way too old for it to be an A380. Wrong engine type for the A340 too. Same for Il-86, Il-96, 707, P-1, DC-8, Convair 880, Convair 990, DH Comet, Nimrod, Y-10, Il-62, VC-10, Tu-114, Tu-144 and Concorde. It can only be a 747.

Ahh, the Il-96M. I didn't know that they ever got round to making one of those with western engines. It was rebuilt to Il-96-400T status as RA-96101 using PS-90 engines, which is why I didn't realise it at first. On an interesting note, 96101 is currently undergoing conversion into an Airborne Command Post with airborne refueling capability (receiver and giver) for the Russian Government.

I'm sure the photo is available; I just viewed it! Could you please try posting the photo yourself to see whether it really has got problems? The link address is as follows: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7994650548_840094da70_z.jpg

Strangely enough, I could not find the photo anymore. Actually, I think I might have not found the correct link address; I just posted what I believed to be the photo's link address. I am a bit confused: where exactly do I find a photo's link address, and how do I know if it is? Please also recommend some good sites where good photos can be found to post here. Thanks! In the meantime, maybe you should post a picture first, to give other players something to do.

You guys are good!
Although I worked several airshows when i was a teen (my Mom worked there), I was never much interested in military aircraft. Some are truly fascinating to look at, but the nature of what they are built for is what always put me off.
So I'll have to pass on this one, but I'll keep an eye on the result, and on this thread which is fun.
Take care....

This will be a new one, with two photos of the same aircraft. Two photos i took today from my window of an aircraft that was cruising at 37000ft, flying by a zone which is 60km +/- away from where i am, Good visibility and clear skies allowed me to took the photos. In one you can identify the company and in the other you can guess the aircraft (i guess so...)

I agree with the A318. It has A320 wings and winglets and the distinct enlarged tail (enlarged because of stability issues due to its smaller size compared to the A320). And I did not even peek at Google for this one. Perhaps it is because the recent pictures are all Airbus :P.
I have already taken a look at your very interesting pictures, Johnny :).Thanks for voting!

Boeing 717?
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: 1993matias on August 22, 2017, 09:11:02 am
The boeing 717 has the same width as the DC-9 and MD-80/90 which is a 3+2 seating arrangement :) (just like the Fokker 70/100)
I would guess BAe ATP?
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Anzatax on August 22, 2017, 11:12:40 am
Sorry, Matias. It is the 717 :P.
Must be a special arrangement in this picture, I guess. I've searched the Internet, and this seating layout seems to be a possibility for the Boeing 717.
Here's a picture to prove it: (http://www.aviationexplorer.com/airline_aircraft_seat_maps/midwest-airlines-seat-charts-map-layout/midwest_airlines_boeing717-seating-map.gif)
Use Google's search image function to see if I am right. This seems to be a Southwest seating chart for the 717.

Are you sure? Because it seems like there are open doors at the rear galley, and that's not possible in the 717

Here's a Delta 717 plan: (http://www.seatplans.com/assets/Airlines/delta/seatplans/Delta_B717_100214.jpg)
There seems to be an open door at the end of this one.
In addition, you may wish to check out this website for more confirmation: Delta Airlines Boeing 717 Seat Map (https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Delta_Airlines/Delta_Airlines_Boeing_717.php).
They don't have complete 2+2 seating, though.

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!

I've been told that this picture is the only one in existence of this control surface in operation. It's used because the engines on the MD-90 are heavier than onthe MD-80, so in case of a nose up-attitude stall these will push the nose back down

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: 1993matias on October 15, 2017, 12:26:08 pm
Ok, let's collect all the clues:
It flew in the fifties, only one was ever constructed, it was based on an existing aircraft of which many flew, it was experimental (and unsuccessful), was American, propeller aircraft and had something that could be detached from the aircraft on the ground (not bombs or small parts, something really big). The principle (the big detachable thing) is kind of in use in some huge helicopters today which look really weird when they don't have the big box singe it's just a cockpit and the engine left.

So to remain in biplanes...
This one might not be easy so I'll give you a hint : developed during WWI but built and flown only after the war. Around 1,500 of this model were built!
Although this aircraft does indeed have the look and probably the feel of a Cessna 152, it is not a Cessna 152.
It is a US based manufacturer. They are usually able to configure their aircraft in amphibious mode, or as in this picture with skis.
Any other guesses?
What kinds?

Post by: Thunderstruck on March 06, 2018, 04:11:48 pm
Well it's a bit difficult to answer about the popularity of the aircraft. Its a small manufacturer, and they produced 2,500 aircraft in their first 50 years of business, and they are continuing to build them.
A slightly newer version than the one pictured here (but also with the skis!) is one of the DEFAULT aircraft in FSX (Steam) but you would need the Deluxe edition of it.

Except I don't know any aircraft manufacturers from there - so for the moment it still remains a mystery to me...
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: 1993matias on March 27, 2018, 09:08:29 pm
It's not a well known manufacturer. To be honest, I don't even think this aircraft is in the game - or the manufacturer
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Thunderstruck on March 27, 2018, 09:32:13 pm
Well I typed "East German Aircraft manufacturers" in Google, and the first result it comes up with is the Baade 152.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baade_152
Built & tested in Dresden (which is a surprisingly beautiful -and historically emotional- city that I went to visit about 2 years ago).
As per the Wiki page, only 3 flying prototypes were built, which would indeed make that photograph of yours a rare sight.
Is that the aircraft?

Yes, that is indeed correct!

Is it a CRJ? Not sure what the number designation might be. It looks like the planes we loaded baggage for Delta at O'Hare. 😀
I know some CRJs can seat 50 or more, but that wouldn't be this model. I think this model just has 2 single rows with 1 stewardess. I'm just about 6 feet tall and I have to lower my head so I don't hit the ceiling. Lol. These are regional jets, and for good cause....you wouldn't want to fly medium-long flights in this cabin. More people than you'd think have gotten claustrophobic in them!!

It's a Gulfstream of some sort
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Thunderstruck on March 31, 2018, 10:31:45 am
Hi guys,
Metallurgy : yes most definitely at 6 ft you would bump your head in this one! Inside, the cabin is turned into a full ICU unit like in a hospital. Can carry one stretcher patient + doctor & nurse, and if the patient's medical condition is not critical, at times one accompanying person. A tight fit indeed! It is not a CRJ, but there is a connection...
Matias: well if it's not a Gulfstream it must be a.... ?

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Thunderstruck on April 02, 2018, 12:53:55 pm
Well, here is a different picture of the same aircraft...
The three emergency escapes actually put me off a bit, but for an aircraft that did not have round windows in previous versions, the Comet really stands out
"CCCP" is the Soviet registration, but I have never seen anything like it.
Can hardly believe it flies. Are those floaters of sorts it has on the bottom? or are they massive fuel tanks?
The Russians are incredible when it comes to aeronautics. They created the world's largest aircraft long before the jet engine came along, and continued to design gigantic aircraft. Their problem (I think) is that they focus more on military aircraft rather than civilian ones, making their airliners less efficient compared to American and European, while having some of the world's best fighters. Also, their aircraft are usually very ugly :/

I think it is actually a Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair, a conversion of the DC-4 by Freddie Laker and his company, Freddie Laker's Aviation Traders (Engineering) Limited, to replace the aging, small-payload Bristol Freighter. They do look alike, but the Carvair could carry more cars than the Bristol Freighter (they were real "car-go" aircraft ;))

I think on its maiden flight the test pilot did a barrel roll for the sake of showing off the aircraft to spectators, and scaring the CEO of Boeing half dead :D

I'm trying to narrow it down before looking through 100s of wikipedia pages :P
It's not in Airline Mogul, I guess? You say it maybe has passengers, does it have different cabin lengths?

Well, it IS avaiable in airline mogul :P The cabin lenght is one only.

I first thought of the Beech Starship since it's in AM and has oddly placed engines. But it wasn't popular. Then I looked for similar aircraft and the P180 was there - in AM and had military operators. A tough one indeed!

Yes, it's military. It has since been upgraded with modern avionics.

It reminds me some cockpit from FSX, when I was playing this simulator some time ago... But I uninstalled this simulator due to lack of time some like a year ago and can't compare ;) ;)
If it is a military, with two seats, the conclusion must be - a bomber or a kind of transport a/c.
B2 ?

Yeah, but this is a specific one, its not a fighter, as you can see, nor any twin-engined bomber ;) It's not TBF Avenger - the rear cockpit cabin is different.

Oh come on!!!! How the hell are the majority of aviation enthusiasts meant to get this??? If I win any I'll send a photo of a landing light and ask you to name that aircraft. Yeah, Isn't this called "Name the Aircraft"? not guess the aircraft from some obscure part.

It's too easy to guess if it's just a picture of the aircraft ;)
I can give you a hint: It is an S-duct, but smaller than a 727
Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: Scotia Air on May 05, 2019, 04:43:06 pm
I think this should be named "Guess the Aircraft for the mechanics only". Who gives a damn how many ducts it has or the shape. The majority of Aviation enthusiasts look at aircraft not obscure parts. Will i send in a photo of a tyre and get you to guess it? Come on be realistic.

I can give you a hint: It is an S-duct, but smaller than a 727
Ok, if smaller than 727 then it MUST be Dassault Falcon. But forgive me, I can't tell you if it's -900 or -7X or -50 version, as I can't see it from that photo :P ;)
Hawker Trident / Tupolew / or L1011 Tristar are more or less the same/bigger than 727. I don't know any other tri-jet aircrafts :)

I think that hints here are the point. When you look in such a photo you can see that something is "strange" - you see a part of jet engine but in a kind of "reverted" view. Then you can deduct that it must either be an APU or a third engine inlet. You can't get into APU, so it must be a s-duct of a tri-jet aircraft. From thins point it's easier :)
If we want to guess aircrafts only by photos of the exterior, and mainly looking at a hull, cabin, or wing, we can finish this "contest" after, let's say 1000 posts :)
Come on. Use your "sherlock's" mind and try to guess by getting as many hints as possible - like with my PZL.23 plane before ;)

Title: Re: Guess the aircraft!
Post by: PoCichuuu on May 29, 2019, 08:45:31 pm
Aft door depicted here are rather too small to be for C-5 comparing to rest parts of the picture. Besides, C-5 doesn't have outlet/inlet pipe on the top of wing-foundation part.
I would go rather for some turboprop. C-130 ?

A more obvious hint: it never saw combat or anything because 1) it is a prototype and 2) it was a total failure. However, the lessons learned from this aircraft were later used to create one of the most iconic and powerful fighters of WWII.

Yup, you guessed it!
The Type 224 was designed by R. J. Mitchell, who had designed quite a number of racing aircraft to win the Schneider trophy. However, for some reason the Type 224 was a massive failure. Mitchell managed then to go on and design the Spitfire - a truly amazing aircraft. Hard to imagine, eh? :D

It's indeed a WWII U.S. bomber, but not the Flying Fortress, and not a Boeing. By the end of the war, nearly 10,000 of these aircraft were built (counting all variants).
They were built in plants in California and Kansas, if that can serve as a clue.
